Quite often...most times in fact...your "sweet spot" is determined by your lens shape (height and width). And most of the cool frames have smaller lenses. Check out Martin Scorcese's frames...now there's a wide sweet spot!

I used to wear Oakley progressive lenses. My eye doctor told me I couldn't wear them anymore because the lenses wrapped around too far and my astigmatism couldn't deal with that. She and I argued about that for quite some time. In the end, I had to accept that I can no longer wear glasses I like. When I raise those complaints about the width of the correction (horizontal) and the height of the sweet spot (vertical), the eye doctors just wait me out, then tell me to learn to be happy with what I have. I want Borg implants. Hey, if I've got to wear these things, then I want to go all in.

The thing that bugs me about progressives is trying to watch TV from a recliner or a movie in a theater. I have to tilt my head forward and slide my glasses down to the tip of my nose to be able see the screen in focus.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys? X2(X3 pending hardware upgrade), Emulator X2, E-mu 1212M, Virtual String Machine

And what bothers me that you can't draw with progressives. If you turn the paper so that the corner is towards you, it gets skewed. Ten years ago I paid 600 euros for progressives just to find out they were a one trick pony. I can only use them at work during auctions (sitting on a podium, watching the buyers and making notes in the catalogue) or driving (but I don't need glasses when I drive). I can't use them using PC, watching tv or reading. The sweet spot is so narrow I need to turn my head reading a CD cover. Usin two different cheapo glasses (10 euros a piece) I can see much better than ever with those expensive ones. Of course, the techniques have improved a lot, I know more and Specsavers sell cheap, but I'm still hesitating to buy another pair of progressives.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

mike_mccue Hi Spacey, Back when I was a younger man I use to have Oakleys handed to me for free. :-) I admire their latest technology... but I haven't found an current Oakley frame that suits my style. I have gotten use to the idea that frames cost a small fortune... I hate it, but I am used to it. I am looking for a lens manufacturer and grade of lens that I may use in frames that do suit my taste. Does Oakley provide raw lenses for a customer like me? I'm seeing stuff like Zeiss, Pentax, and many other great optics manufacturers names and each one has a full range of quality. The thing is it seems like progressive lens fabrication is still emerging technology (even though they were invented in the early 1900's) so the big famous names like Zeiss are not necessarily in possession of the latest patented grinding processes. It seems like there are newer companies, like Oakley, that are leading the way here. I really like wrap arounds and I have looked at Oakleys several times in the past few months and always stopped short because I haven't found anything that doesn't make me look like a transformer robot. Maybe I've missed a range that they offer that isn't distributed as widely? Thanks for the recommendation!!! best regards, mike You're welcome! And we have progress...one down. I don't know everything they can do....I ran out of money :) I know that the field of vision is much greater. Their claim to improvements are definately supported. Easy to find out Mike...take a frame in and they'll send it to Oakley and find out...if it's worth the hassle to ya. Personally I think getting a cheap pair that works for you and then get some of those old cardboard 3D glasses with the red and blue lense for cool factor would be a good idea...didn't that work in "Grease"? Progressive lenses are a beat. When I think I'm getting use to them...I'm not. I'm very satisfied with my choices and really like the idea of being able to change lenses in less than 30 seconds with the split-jackets. It's a snap, literally. Now I need a good reason for more lenses lol. I envy folks that don't require them. Now that would be real cool....oh well, at least my ears work good.

When my husband needed them, I googled for reviews of the best lenses and learned a lot very quickly-- some sites compare the main brand offerings-- the trick is to find an optometrist that supplies the lenses you decide on. I can tell you that the lenses my husband bought at Costco were vastly inferior to the ones he's using now (from a smaller opteometrist's office).

Oh, spectacles... I misread the topic title to have something to do with becoming a glass eye snob and jumped in to read with curiousity. Imagine my disappointment.

Mike, I got my varifocals on a 'buy one get one free' deal a couple of years back. For my regular set, I shelled out quite a bit extra for Nikon lenses. On my 'free' pair, I chose 'standard' quality tinted optics (for use as sunglasses). Putting aside the tinting, the difference in quality between the two pairs is incredible. The Nikon lenses are much thinner for a start, but their 'sweet spot' is much larger - both these factors make them much more comfortable to wear. I find myself (subconsciously) having to turn my head a lot more to focus with the cheaper lenses. I'm due an eye test this month, and if my prescription is changed, I'm definitely going to go with the better quality lenses again, these were worth every penny.

I was talking with a guy the other day who had this indentation across the bridge of his nose. I asked him how he got it and he replied "Glasses." I said "Have you ever considered contact lenses?" To which he replied "Nah, they don't hold enough beer."

"I know that it costs a bunch to make an injection mold, but I dislike the whole notion of status symbol plastic." I know nothing of "status symbol" so it's not part of my decision making with glasses, clothing, vehicles or just about anything that I spend my money own. I'm glad I don't have my taste distorted by what others may think...and not saying you do Mike..but you brought it up. It was a simple process for me. I made an appointment to have my eyes checked. Time for lense correction so I looked around at all the frames offered...picked the ones I liked..answered a few questions about the options I'd like to have...and paid them. Snob, status symbol, brand names (were noticed because the frames were grouped in sections and display cases) and probably some other **** that I don't think about, never crossed my mind. I guess if they had I probably would have picked the Harley frames...maybe next time they'll have some I like more than some others, maybe not. Like, don't like...pretty simple. I do wish I'd gotten the shades polarized too....next time.

Not specifically for progressives, but more about the frames... My optometrist, who only offers erious boutique haute couture frames, will swear up and down that the cheaper frames are utter crap and will warp, etc... "there's no telling how long they've been sitting in a warehouse and what conditions they are stored in..." Whatever, lady. I have several pairs of glasses from coastal.com (first order = free frames, and they do have designer frames and nice lenses) and from zennioptical.com (made in china, practically free non-designer frames, ok lenses). The last pair of non-progressive glass I bought from zennioptical cost me less than $60 WITH photochromatic lenses and an anti scratch coat. They offer $9 frames and free base level lenses, too. So, really, you can get a pair for less than $20 with shipping. I even bought my son's latest pair with them (photochromatic, too). Are the the best lenses? probably not. But I have like, four pairs, so who cares? I wouldn't necessary recommend them for progressives, but for FRAMES... You can often have your Doc fill the lenses. And, you can virtually try them on by uploading a picture, and it's probably saying too much about me, but it's more fun than I have loading the dishwasher.

There are. New Age lenses cause you to look inside yourself while you trip over the furniture. Punk lenses just poke you in the eye.
