Re: VSTs on x64OS? Any trick to finding the 32bit ones? 2013/06/23 10:49:26 (permalink)
I have 64-bit and 32-bit plugins installed on my 64-bit system and here's how I handle them.

The 64-bit plugs are in C: Program Files\Cakewalk\VST Plugins and the 32-bit plugs are in C: Program Files(x86)\Cakewalk\VST Plugins. I run Sonar X2 as 64 bit so even though I have both locations in Cakewalk Plugin Manager I only have it load the 64-bit version of any dual install plugins...between the two the 64-bit plugs will be generally more stable in a 64-bit environment(by default your 32-bit plugs will use Bitbridge unless you have purchased jBridge and use that instead) and can utilize more memory.

I also have a 32-bit install of Sound Forge( no 64-bit available as of the current version- 10.0e) and it automatically sees all the 32-bit plugs but not the 64-bit ones. As more and more apps and plugins move to 64-bit the need to bridge 32-bit will disappear and everything will become a lot more stable, but right now we're in a transition period so hang on!

Use the registry editor to examine the current VST inventory (...\cakewalk music software\sonar producer\cakewalk vst\inventory). Each VST has a binary DWORD value named "isX64", indicating whether or not it's a 64-bit plugin.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I do what Bill does, except that I do not include the 32bit path in Sonar's plugin manager. If I ever install a 32bit-only plugin, I install it to a subfolder of the 32bit plugins folder and only add that folder to the plugin manager. Sonar doesn't even know that those other 32bit plugins are installed.

I'm just starting to load up all the VSTs on my new x64 system.

I picked two easy ones to start with.

I installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions of SleepyTimes Lisp

I installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Valhalla Room.

The 64bit dlls are in C:\Programs\Vstplugins\

The 32bit dlls are in C:\Programs (x86)\Vstplugins

The files each have a unique file name.

Cakewalk Plugin Manager sees both versions of the Lisp but only the 64bit version of Valhalla Room.

Any ideas?

I haven't done anything about setting up a bridge... I don't know if I'm supposed to or not... etc.

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

Why oh why do you want SONAR 64bit to see 32bit plugs when you have a 64bit version?

I have 3 install locations.

c:\Program Files\vstplugins <------ 64bit
c:\Program Files(x86)\vstplugins32 <---- 32bit only (where no 64bit exists)
c:\Program Files(x86)\vstplugins <---- 32bit (where 64bit exists)

The top two locations are looked at by SONAR 64bit
The bottom two locations are looked at by SONAR 32bit

Hi Mike,

You didn't mention what version of Sonar you are using but it sounds like X2.
X2 does a much better job of discriminating between 32/64 bit plug-ins but still has issues.

The problem is this case is that Cakewalk's VST scanner has assigned the both versions of Valhalla the same CLSID # (the main way Sonar uses to differentiate plug-ins) and when this happens Cakewalk's plug-in manager only shows one of them.

With X2 the **64 bit version shows (at least in the cases I've bothered checking) but in previous versions of Sonar it could refer to either the 32 bit or 64 bit version - it probably had to do with which appears first or last in the registry but for all intents and purposes it appears to be random.
**edit & correction - see image below

There are 2 ways to deal with this.
  • Eliminate one of the plug-ins (prevent the scanner from seeing it) by using one of techniques mentioned previously in this thread.
I consider this cleanest way of handling the 32/64 plug-in issue and if you have a lot of plug-ins this will help keep you from hitting the maximum plug-in number limitation as quickly.
  • Use a 3rd party tool (such a *MenuMagic).  *disclosure -MenuMagic is my retail creation and this is one of the things it can do.
If you need to/want to be able to choose between using with the 32 bit or 64 bit version of a plug-in (or don't want to bother having to separate them) then you need to use this option.

I did it because I am not sure what will happen when I open old projects and I figured I can just use 64 on the new projects.

I only did it with some plug ins. On others I am hoping that the 64 bit versions will just automatically sub out for the older 32 bit instances.

I only have 14 plug ins so it is not kinda a big deal.

I am still trying to figure out why the ValhallaRoom.dll isn't being shown after a plug in scan.

best regards,
mike

Eliminate the 32 version.
Your older projects should either automatically switch to the 64 version or Sonar will say that it can't find it and offer to switch you to the 64 bit version.
Try it - delete** the 32 bit version, run the VST Scanner, then open an old project. With 14 plug-ins this should take you maybe 5 minutes...
Worse case is that you have to reinstall the 32 bit version of Valhalla.

**Or you can also just rename the vst dll extension - valhallawhatever.dll to valhallawhatever._dll then run the scanner.  And Rename it back, rerun scanner if needed.

Your comments led me to this:

which got me thinking about the short names. I'm installing Komplete. When I'm done I am going to try to rename one of the .dlls.

best regards,
mike

This is your problem.

I suspect the plug-in scanner lost interest in you and moved on.

Re: VSTs on x64OS? Any trick to finding the 32bit ones? 2013/06/25 16:39:48 (permalink)

Unless it's the only version available, I don't even install the 32bit versions of my VSTs anymore.

If I open up an old project that used a (now removed) 32bit plug, it tells me in advance what's missing, so I just load up the 64bit version. And then I ask Bapsi to remind me what the settings were.

Simples.

OHT plz.

Even better, I believe I may deserve a GBAT

I put all vsts in the 64 bit cakewalk vstplugins folder. I then make sub folders with everything organized by brand. I have one folder with only free vsts and that's the one with the 32bit stuff.

Cakewalk, Harrison Mixbus 4, Waveform 9, ADK intel i7 2600 3.40 ghz, 8gb Ram, Win 7, Presonus Audiobox 44VSL.
