    Best I could find:

The term has been used since the mid-1970s.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

It must have come about before the 1980s.  Here on Britannica they write; "UPC will encode a product at SKU, UPC is maintained by the Uniform Code Council founded 1972." (paraphrased)
