There is no point to drums. They are usually cylindrical. You wouldn't know that though, you play guitar where nothing exists outside of your particular realm.

Bluegrass and folk doesn't use them and the Grand Ole Opry didn't allow them until several years back..... Drums where likely the very first musical instruments conceived in the mind of man....... so they have a long history..... Hey, it's like I tell people who don't like guns..... don't buy one. If you don't like drums...... don't use them. I'm totally cool with or without drums in music depending on the genre of course..... me, personally, I mostly like and use them.

That's weird. People usually tell me that they love drums. It's the drummer they can't stand. Maybe that's just true in my case, though...

I think this thread is a day late. Prolly the OP spent the day yesterday perfecting flicking back his hair in a timely manner to co-ordinate with his 'tortured' facial expressions when noodling around an A scale whilst buying into a fantasy of what he's doing as being important in some way. Or maybe I'm being just a little bit cynical.

This is a very poor topic, IMO, Rik. it reminds me of the time that Joe Bravo (former forum member now banned for life) made the bold statement and arguments in the forum that drummers were not musicians. Personally I disagree with that statement completely and the thought had never even crossed my mind as such. While I understand that you and your music may not need drums, that doesn't mean that they are irrelevant in today's music. you've already ruffled feathers of a drummer in this thread, and if more show up, i'm sure they will be equally upset with your statement.

I think Rik is somewhat tounge in cheek on the subject. Maybe I'm wrong and he really doesn't see the need for drums. If he means what I think he means, then I might agree. I think there is an over emphasis on drums sometimes, almost as if somehow or some way drums MUST be a part of anything with a rhythmic feel. If a rhythm doesn't fit no problem ,stretch the part and put drums in it....know what I'm saying? 99% of everything I hear has some kind of drums in it when it isn't always necessary. In rock, metal, thrash, hip hop the drums are recognized as pretty much part of the recipe if not THE recipe. But even rock can sometimes be less than a huge pounding drum at all times.

There's plenty of music that doesn't benefit from drums Django Reinhardt is a good example where drums would have swamped the delicate interplay between tonal instruments. Besides drummers need more time to spend at the bar so it's welcome that a guitarist feels an over-arching need to play with himself now and then. So there's no necessity for drums at all in many situations, much like Herb has already pointed out, and most of us already know. Who can tell the motivation here though it does smell like bit of deliberately contentious and elitist dick swinging from someone way too caught up in their own percieved self importance and legend. Most of 'em need a drummer make them realise how bad their timing actually is and to keep their wives warm of course while the big guy disappears up his own jacksie. See I can be tongue in cheek too...

Rikkie Why would you need drums . Just to tap out the rhythm? When you're playing a melody or sing a melody , you know the rhythm, otherwise you couldn't play or sing the melody.Rhythm starts with melody, imho Please enlighten me ; ) Rik P.S. did I mention I don't like drums ? ; )
Well...extrapolate it further..why do you need a guitar if you can sing or hum the melody? Why sing or hum when you can just imagine the tune? What's the point of having ears? Black..black..it's all black!..what's for tea Mother, nightmares and shadows? They're here! They're here! They've landed on the pier!

No, honestly I was thinking about it when I posted it and realised I couldn't really be arsed to type it out. I could have scrapped it before posting but that would have meant throwing away a perfectly good +1 to my post count.

My point exactly..there's a lot of music that doesn't benefit from drums. But then if the drummer shows up and there's no bass player...then what One reason I'm mostly a solo player. You can put a lot of rhythm into a piano or a guitar. I have loved it when the drummer finally showed up and the bass player too...I don't remember the last time that happened.

Without drums the bass player would get blamed for everything.

In an orchestra, the part that is played and the person is called "A Percussionist" and plays a Percussion Part even if they are playing a Timpani. Drummer is not the correct term and probably is just a slang term that narrowly defines a person playing a percussive part in a song or symphony.

Sorry you feel that way Rik - it's not about being in a clique - it's your subject. your subject attacked a group of people who absolutely feel justified that they have a valid reason to play. again - I agree that not all music needs drums, but to say "what's the point" is saying NONE of music needs drums, thereby saying drummers are useless. it's an attack on drummers. Why did anyone take his post seriously? It was just a joke, like the long running jokes about bass players etc. Honestly if someone attacked all guitar players in a tongue in cheek way I couldn't give a toss. Why would I?

Joe was a soundblaster advocate, too. he bashed anyone who bashed soundblaster! he had a website with testing he had done claiming soundblasters were actually better than most prosumer soundcards costing much more.
