Not sure I fully understand the problem. Since you already have a redemption code, I assume you have bought the upgrade already and got the code from a reseller. Assuming you bought the correct Platinum product (i.e. upgrade from the right version or completely new), after redeeming you will see in your account that you now have platinum and that the membership ends on 'infinity symbol'. There is nothing to choose from since the code already has the product you bought encoded in it.

Yes, you need to redeem before August 31 to get lifetime. After that, I suspect that you will only get 1 year. Anyway, I bought the same 'upgrade' and redeemed it. Automatically gave me Platinum for life.
