1½ million Youtube views thanks to Sonar X1, Boss and Roland ...

... and 17 year-old music student JosieC working out a 22 part loop arrangement and delivering a perfect live performance in front of the camera.

I hope you are interested to see this and please accept my apologies if you have seen it before:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izrL7pBdkaw

Sonar X1 was at the heart of this recording and you can see it running on the video, recording the live audio stream from the Boss RC-30 loop pedal. The Sonar recording was then used as the soundtrack for the video.

Josie also pre-configured midi tracks on Sonar X1 using the invaluable Cakewalk instrument definition "ins" file for the Roland XV-5050 synth which you can also see being used in the video.

With this setup all Josie has to do is hit the down-arrow on the keyboard to change the sound from the synth and you can see her doing this as she builds up the song while track 1 continues to record the live output from the RC-30. The output of the XV-5050 was connected to the Aux input of the RC-30 so that she can loop the synth sounds in real-time.

The mic pre, vocal effects (telephone voice etc) live harmonies and a little guitar effect are provided by the TC-Helicon VoiceLive2 which feeds the main line input of the RC-30.

I hope you enjoy this and that it is helpful. If you'd like to see more of Josie's music there are around another 20 live videos on her Youtube channel here:

and her artist Facebook page can be found here:

With very best wishes from a delighted Sonar X1 user,
TobyC

Was that live? Audio and video didn't always look in sync.

Still, if the next Sonar version comes bundled with her, I'll buy.

Despite the grumpy old crowd that screams "there is no more talent", I am amazed at what the younger generation can achieve.  The pop music culture may produce a lot of crap (it always has), but  there are so many, like this young lady taking advantage of today's technology while maintaining core music fundamentals to create new and exciting ways to create things just not possible in the past.  Thanks for sharing

Ah, Sad state of modern music.

Just a bunch of loops. :)

I had that pedal. I always hit it too late or early to make it loop juuust at the right point because they have no tactile feedback.

The Akai Headrush switches have a better feel.

What is the purpose of Sonar running there in the background?

Thanks for all the supportive feedback.

As I said in my original post, Sonar X1 is running to record the live output from the loopstation while at the same time allowing Josie to switch between synth sounds by pre-setting these on the XV-5050.

In more detail: Track 1 (an audio track) was armed to record the live output of the RC-30. Other tracks (midi) were pre-configured to control XV-5050 multi-timbral sounds but not used to record anything (as you can see on the screen running in the background) so all she has to do is hit the 'down arrow' on the Querty keyboard to change the synth sound by moving down through the pre-set midi tracks on Sonar. The audio output of the XV-5050 is fed to the Aux input of the loopstation so she could loop these sounds.

I realise looping is not for everyone's taste, which is fine of course. Like the JazzSinger, I've been playing music for a good few years and embarrassingly I couldn't work the loopstation at all for these same reasons. Josie spent many days practicing and working out this live arrangement, so much so that she gave herself a foot injury and had to stop 'looping' for months! She's an "A star" music student who also performs in band arrangements, on other genres and is a prolific writer (as you can see on her channel). She's about to start a full-time modern music degree in London this September so takes her music very seriously which is probably why she was able to get this to work.

    Very best wishes
    Toby

So the entire performance involves all those additional technical manipulations? Pretty good.

Listening to the other looped songs she does on YouTube, it's clear the performances needs careful working out first.

Yes, but what is the purpose of recording the looper output?

    Good point!

The reason is that although everything was routed through the RC-30, not everything is 'looped', i.e. some of the performance was not recorded to its memory such as when she sang the verses. So she used Sonar as a quality recorder of the overall performance which then formed the soundtrack to the video. The alternative would have been to use the soundtrack from one of the video cameras but this would have been a relatively poor quality recording compared with a pristine Sonar 24 bit audio stream.

    Best wishes

i am concerned about the direction in which music is taking.
its quite obvious she is an inivatator in music and really bringing in a new genre, style and way of creating music.
but the basic sounds and eliments of music as we know it along with theory
are pretty much losing value to looped music.
the feel is gone and it changes the humanization and mechanices of a song.

i would only hope you could agree that when i hit the note a different way each time i play the chorus in a song it gives charecter and personality to my songs.

or when my emotions took over and i started to weep during the verses it was caught not only as a moment in time but a feeling in my heart.
looped music doesnt give this, its not a heart and no matter how close they try to make a machine into a human, they never will.

i will say this,if ever i saw a performance that had heart using looped exspressions" as i call it.
    it was this.

her voice is so good, talent in so many areas.
some people can try to learn how to be like this.
    others are born like this.
    she is.

    great song.

I think people like this help to get rid of the assumption that anyone creating music using loops is by default not musically trained. Sometimes I am shocked by the level of musical training some loop/sample based artists have. I reject the whole "less human" criticism because I know that the end result is always going to vary by artist..a very human quality. It is easy to make that assumption if you take looping at face value and judge strictly by the most pedestrian sample loop ripoff used in pop music. A loop can be used to simply keep one from reinventing the wheel (why people think manually repeating a monotonous phrase is somehow superior to realizing that one is repeating the same damn thing and deciding to loop it tickles me) or it can be manipulated in ways that are physically impossible to play. It does not replace musicianship, but rather can actually enhance when used properly.

Thanks for this, Toby.  The video simply blew me away.  I was floored when observing this amount of talent in one so young.  You seem to know quite a bit about the background of how this was all accomplished.  Can you tell me if she worked out all this herself?  I'm having a hard time believing that someone like Craig Anderton didn't stop by several times to teach her how to set up something so intricate.  The performance alone was superb.  But the arrangement and application of technology was something one would only expect from a master with many years of experience.

Can you tell me if she worked out all this herself? I'm having a hard time believing that someone like Craig Anderton didn't stop by several times to teach her how to set up something so intricate. The performance alone was superb. But the arrangement and application of technology was something one would only expect from a master with many years of experience.

Thank you so much for these lovely comments. I can confirm absolutely that Josie worked out the arrangement herself including the chords and parts of the song, splitting it into a 'loopable' arrangement, selecting all the XV-5050 sounds through the Sonar interface and setting these up on differerent midi channels, the beatboxing, the harmony and vox effects through the VoiceLive2 and rehearsing until it was good enough to record. My involvement was to figure out how to cable it together and record the performance in real-time in a way that allowed Josie to maintain live control of all the effects she used to pull it together. So I was in at the beginning as far as connecting it all up was concerned and then at the end to help her record it. Other than that it was all her own work.

Thanks again so much for the lovely support.
    With best wishes

She's awesome!!!! Music does NOT belong to the so called "purists", music belongs to the people! Loop your ass off girl, multitrack overdubbing was once condemned by these haters too.
