10 Historic acts every kid should knoe

Running on from the Paul McCartney thread, and youngsters not knowing the Beatles, I thought what historic acts a kid should know about. Not really your favourite, but those that everyone should know. I'll start with one I don't really like.
Elvis
Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 (they should know he started with a group)
The Beatles
The Stones
The Who
Jimi Hendrix
Prince
Nirvana
Led Zepplin
Queen

I don't really care about the last one either, but they are pretty key I think.

What would be yours?

When my kids got to be around 12 years old, we started having "Music Sundays". Every Sunday afternoon, we'd gather together and I would put on an album and we'd listen and talk about what we were listening to. We started with early Beatles and kind of worked our way from there. Some stuff they liked a lot, some not so much. We covered early blues stuff, late 60's country, progressive rock, 60's folk, 80's metal, etc. By the time they were around 15 to 16 years old, they had started their own collections and it wasn't uncommon to come into the house and hear Led Zepplin coming from one room and Nirvana coming from the other.

My kids are now in their early 20's and they both live in another state. I'll see them posting links to videos on FB to all kinds of music from all sorts of genres. They go to concerts by a wide variety of new acts and older artists that haven't recorded anything new in decades.

I get a real kick out of them when one of them will send me a text asking me if I'm familiar with a band or artist that I've known about for 40 years. One of my favorites was my daughter asking if I knew about ELO. I texted her a phone pic of a ticket stub I had from 1978.

I don't think there is really a top 10 list they should listen to. I think the key is a wide variety covering multiple genres from multiple decades. They'll branch out on their own from there.

I tried not to force my musical tastes on my daughter, but she was subjected to quite a lot of it on family holidays, trips out etc when she was strapped in the back of the car

She's coming up 23 now and likes a lot of bands and singers I've never heard of these days, but she still has a fondness for Tom Petty, Marc Cohn, Jethro Tull, Del Amitri, Wolfstone and Pink Floyd. Glad she grew out of Avril Lavigne...

I've always suspected that stuff grows out of Avril Lavigne.

I think they should know about the one's who went bankrupt, OD'd, got arrested and jailed for horrible crimes or broke up due to personal squabbling just when they started getting successful.

And Dylan.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Musical education has always been a topic my wife and I loved discussing when planning a family.

The first thing we agreed on was that we should do our best to expose our kid(s) to classical music. This is especially crucial in this day and age. That bar has been lowered drastically in the last decades and things aren't about to get better.

When I grew up, even there were no such records in my parents' collection, I was exposed to classical and orchestral music regularly, through movies and TV.  Unfortunately, that's not so much the case in this day and age.

As for the rest, I can't imagine coming up with only ten names. The most important thing is to try and spark that curiosity which will make kids want to know more, that passion for music, whether it's Stravinsky, Coltrane, the Ramones or Tool.

big plus one for mulligan and o'hare.... Love those guys :)

Don't care what kids listen to as long as they learn an instrument. But apart from mulligan and oh are and their magnificent album tittybiscuits, 9 other seminal acts for my tastes might be: Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Ellington, Dylan, Marley, Simon, Beatles, Simone
