I continually violate commandments 1 thru 8 (at least) which is why I chose to call myself a guitar player.

Not one with which I could take issue. I might simply add: if a tattoo thou must have then let it be these holy commandments tattooed in reverse on your chest. So that before each and every gig you shall stand, shirtless, gazing deeply into the mirror and be reminded of these few essential truths. Then for all that is holy's sake...put your shirt back on before going on stage.

The only universal truth about bass playing is that people who think there's only one "proper" way to play bass don't know anything about bass playing. Or music.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

There is only one rule and it applies equally to all musicians: Play what the music requires. Nothing more. Nothing less. A simple rule, but the difficulty is in determining just what the music is and what it requires. And if one always thinks the music requires more of me and perhaps less of him or her or them, then perhaps one needs to take a step back (or take up the cowbell).

How many commandments are there for cow bell? I've only heard one so far.
1. More cowbell.

Hi, Haven't seen it yet (blocked here at work), but will look at it at home. I was thinking that one comment needs to be that the bass player has to be a frustrated guitar player, and that the only thing he plays is the same stuff that the guitar player does, and the same keys, with one note variance every hundred years! If the bass player doesn't do that, and is on his own trip like Bootsie used to, then it ain't music ... it's some crap that no one can listen to out of Germany, Spain (GASP!), or Italy or Japan! It ain't rock'n'roll!
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Welp...I thank you was right Bapsi...I'm not sure I do understand it:-) It's not a question of more versus less. It's more of a right versus wrong as far as any band or session I've been in low these many years. It aint rocket science. It's groove.

Does this have something to do with your G string?

- Time is relative. Band members who demand that you show up for a gig within 12 hours of the scheduled time are guilty of Timism. (It's wrong...)
- The gig is wherever you setup. It's not your fault that you can't read a map, follow directions, use a GPS, read street signs, or locate the front of the stage. Instead, the band should follow you.
- Rehearsals are for the rest of your band. You've already picked out your platform shoes for the evening. You don't need to rehearse anything else.
- Sound checks are easy. If your amp parts the FOH engineer's hair (and/or beard), it's loud enough.
- The best time to listen to your voice mail is between songs. The band will be happy to wait.
- If/When you and the guitarist play in different keys, glare at him/her and hit that string harder. An apology should be forthcoming.
- When the keyboardist goes on and on about music theory, you can offer an alternative theory that keyboardists don't really exist.
- While it is tempting, you should not mock the drummer. He is armed with sticks and just might understand what you're doing.
- When that drumstick rebounds off of your skull (see previous rule), try not to fall on your bass. Authorities might use it later to identify you.

Hi, They are missing a few of them ... that only applies to me! 101. Don't try to teach Mosh about Am. He can only remember Do, Re Mi, and has no idea what an Am is! And it doesn't sound like A, B or C at all! 102. Translations are a pain. Literal stuff in music teaching is even worse at the CHB! 103. Trying to teach someone scales when the notes don't make sense is stupid! 104. Remember that all this learning is to ensure you can no longer free form like you wanted to at 12 years old, and you thought it was cool. But everyone around you said you were noisy and bad! The guitarist will get mad and have you fired! 105. Make sure you own all the equipment, so you can fire the guitarist when he gets bossy! 106. (More as they come!)
