$10,000 "major label sounding vocal Microphone," for under $1,500

Any ideas?  What's up with Mojave?  Sweetwater is constantly pushing them..   Could an AKG really do it?

Peace

EDIT = we seem to be having a dropout with the under $1,000...  Let's shoot for, "under one thousand, but I upped it $1,500."

Cheers

I wasn't blown away by the Mojave, but it seems like a solid contender.

My favorite that I've used in that price range is the Bock 195 (actually, the old 95).  Fet, fat switch.  great, solid mic.

I just got my damaged Oktava 319 back from Michael Joly w/ the mods done.  I haven't used it yet except on my voice to test - I should be doing some vocal/guitar stuff w/ it tonight.  That might be a contender less than that.  Loved it before the mod, tho it was dark.  We'll see about it after.
Another way, although less general use, is the Royer 101 ribbon.  It has a brighter back side.

Your best bet (esp. for vocals) is to find a studio w/ some examples of stuff you can afford.  Many studio engineers like nothing better to talk shop and express their opinions.  Much like this forum, except they actually do the work all day.

I'm impressed..  Those look like great choices...  @ AT, that bock is beautiful..  @ batsbrew, I am definitely going to look into the Shure.

AT, I hear what you are saying about the studio.  Its a thought swirling in the back of my head.  But if I can fake this sound, by home-depot'ing my closet into a vocal booth, and getting a great mic, I'm inclined to do it that way...  I'm not trying to record my vocals..  So there are other variables..

    Thanks ya'll

The Bock (Soundeluxe) U95 was a great mike...you don't see many that are being resold

AT4060 is nice but not extremely "tubey"

    I have a Peluso 2247SE which is outstanding...find one used (you're looking for a $10,000 sound, right?)

At that range, the Pearlman TM-1 is a contender, though it'll be on the hairy edge of that range. A really nice mic though. Look around and you'll find plenty of love for it.

    There are 5:

    Pearlman mentioned above
    Telefunken AK 47
    Telefunken AR51
    Telefunken CU29
For some vocalists, not all, a TLM49.

Just kidding about the 5 but these would be my picks.

Go to http://www.pensadosplace.tv/category/episodes/ and listen to the mic shoout about 7 minutes in on the video from this week and last. I think the Telefunkens in this range sound amazing compared to the real Tele U47.

FYI, I just used my Oktava 319 w/ the Joly mods on a female vox.  Sounds really great - much more "open" than the pre-mod.  It sounds like a $1000 mic now.  I even strapped a couple of compessors into the chain following the vocal take to see how it reacted to being a mastered, finished peace (serial compression can really bring out the sibilance in the end).  The t's got hard and there was a little more sss, but not as much as before (or on preamps other than the Warm W12 I'm testing).

For less than $700 you are getting a keeper.

    Linear,

right place, wrong city.  Oktavamod is based out of Cape Cod.

Yes, I'm very happy (so far) w/ the sound.  There is expectations involved and no I'm not doing any "scientific" shoot outs, but I tonight I re-recorded the vocal track for a song I had done previous to dropping the mic.  I can hear a difference.

I went ahead and had the whole shebang done - Premium Electronics and Dome.  I don't imagine that the last $100 electronic upgrade made a whole lot of difference - even Michael admits that, but I waited a couple of years to get this done and don't figure to get another main mic anytime soon.  The great thing is I only paid $100 for the 319 back in the great Guitar Center blow out days.

Tomorrow a guitarist is coming over to do a little amp work.  I should have a much better idea of how general purpose it is now.  Guitar (acoustic and electric) and vocals are mostly what I record here at home, and I know the vocals are taken care of now.  And I have a pair of SDC for the acoustics.

If you stay on top of E-bay you can get 319/219s pretty cheap.

Electric guitar about a foot from a little Roland amp sounded pretty much like the amp sounded in the room.  Lots o' cut.

I  also like their C7 Large Diaphragm Multi-Pattern FET Condenser @ $700.00 CND

I do not work for or have have any type of deal or relationship with Miktek.                                                                         I am not a sales man or music retailer           I am just a recording musician ,producer engineer who owns , likes and uses these products and I highly recommend them. They sound great but are a bit ugly. They make drum mics andsmall condencers too as cwell as a tube pre amp. I have not tried any of those yet. Check them out for yourself, I bought mine at LONG AND MACQUADE EDMONTON ALBERTA .

+1 for the Shure KSM44a.  I have a KSM44 and it is by far the best-sounding mic I own.

Don't know if it's still on, but AudioDeluxe had the AKG 414 series for something like $699, which is mucho cheap for those mics.  I don't own one, but it's hard to go wrong for that price.

Mojave Audio, AKG and Shure are major label mainstays. A thousand bucks will get you a damn fine microphone that no bigtime producer would snicker at.

The AKG C414 is top-notch for about a grand, and is incredibly versatile. You can use it on literally anything.

The Shure KSM-44 is in the same league, just a tiny notch below the AKG, IMO. About a grand.

The Mojave MA-201FET is an amazing mic for vocals, although I've heard it used for field recordings made by a good recordist (Mr. Royer himself) and was blown away by the detail. That one's around 8 bills, IIRC.

And of course, there are dozens of microphones that have been longtime standards in top studios for far less than a grand. An SM7 ($350) was the only vocal mic on the biggest selling album of all time. That's pretty major.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but does anybody know what the difference is between an AKG C414-XLII and a C414-XLS?  AudioDeluxe is out of the C414-XLII, but has the C414-XLS in stock for $699.  I had heard/read that the XLII was better for vocals and had a more pronounced high end, but not sure as I don't own one.

If you are looking for a $1K-valued mic on the cheap, this almost seems like a no-brainer ...

+1..., great choice! And especially if on sale for approx. $700.00 USD. Got mine a few years ago for $875.00 USD.

I recently sent a MXL V67G to the folks at JJ Audio for their U87 Greyhound Conversion. I am pretty happy with it. It smokes my TLM49.  I used it on my last song for the first time on vocal tracks.  For what it's worth, this is what it sounds like on my vocals.

According to AKG, the difference between the two 414's is the XLII has a little 3KHz bump in its frequency response, presumably to add clarity to vocals. That would seem to make the XLS the more versatile of the two, since a 3KHz lift probably isn't what you want on, say drum overheads (a common application for this mic).

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The AKG C414 is top-notch for about a grand, and is incredibly versatile. You can use it on literally anything.

    Good call...
    The C414XLS is extremely versatile.

I picked up an AKG 214 recently...anyone have an opinion on this? It doesn't exactly sound like a 414 in cardiod mode, imo

Keep in mind what impedance loading contributes to the sound of all audio electronics.

Gaff, aren't you in a perfect position to give us an opinion/samples?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

I almost popped on the C414XLS, then I realized I had a little case of GAS.

    Now I'm longing for a Peluso 22 47se.

    What's wrong with me?
