10cc and What People Did Before DAWs and Samplers!

This Link takes you to a PDF of how 10cc did the vocal harmonies on their classic hit "I'm Not In Love". I read a story like this somewhere else a while back.

Reading how they achieved the airy harmony vocals in this mix is fascinating, particularly considering that at the time a 16 track would have been the state of the art.

Enjoy.

Thanks Space, interesting article. "Sheet Music" is one of my all-time favourite and sound reference albums for creativity, sound engineering, and flow, with "Old Wild Men" being the "prettiest" stupid songs ever. It's one of those albums I can listen to any time, any mood. Godley and Creme were geniuses in my book.

I have always thought that the harmonies on I'm Not In Love - where they recorded tons and tons of Ahhhs and had the engineer fade the chords in and out was just friggin amazing. I love to listen to that song knowing that fact.

Sheet Music - Is that the one with "tick a tick a time bomb tick a tick a time bomb..." and "Wall Street Shuffle"?

I don't know if I should feel special or gay.

10cc The Original Soundtrack is a great album. Un Nuit A Paris (One Night IN Paris) is similar in many ways to Bohemian Rhapsody in its construction - one long theme with several excursions. It pre-dates Bohemian Rhapsody by about 1/2 a year. Not to say that it is better or worse, but in a similar vein.

My Personal Fave of 10cc is How Dare You. Dont Hang Up is such a great song.

Wow, I don't know the song but I'm going to look for it! That story is amazing.
Maybe this should be linked to the "what gets you out of a musical slump" thread - now I want to get home for some inspired recording.

Sound snippet from Anne Clark (the original album with Sleeper in Metropolis)

'Ere mate - you queer?' ('orribly thick cockney)

'No ..... just peculiar' (normal voice)

    Hilarious.

One very interesting aspect of this article is the number of times they mentioned the secretaries, the girls in the office, etc. picking up on the tune and humming or singing it.

Maybe since there are not so many secretaries around any more, this has led to the decline of the music industry ?? (just kidding...)

apart from the multi track voice thing... 10cc... helping couples cop off at 70's discos *smirk* , they used to play it at the end of a night.. obviously I'm not old enough to remember as I was a kid and only know what a "party seven" "blakeies" is from watching life on mars

space_cowboy, if that side of things interests you, well many will quote the BBC radiophonic work shop.. what they did with tape splicing was very good and people like Delia Derbyshire who did a remake of the Dr Who theme.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7512072.stm

hhmm what others can I think of that era, Kate Bush.. some of her work featured taped stuff the instruments etc being played backwards etc (not back masking.hehe)

thats why I'm happy to do prep work BEFORE working on a tune.. older times you had no choice... mess something around.. then sample it back in.

Cowboy, you just ruined my day.

Roflcopter, the bassist looked vaguely familiar. Who was it?
Was that Paul Thompson drumming? He's always brilliant!

    John Wetton.

Yeah that's Paul Thomson - guy looks he works on a building site, big too, and AFAIK that was actually his day job just before, or maybe even still at that time. This was still early days.

Good advice on the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I already have some of it though. I am a music nurd - remember?

It is odd. I have something with a collection of "sounds' they were doing for commercial jingles.

Back on 10cc - their music was so much more complex than the other stuff popular at the time. People just know I'm not in love and miss so much of the other great work.

Yeah, but even on their simpler, more accessible 'sweeter' tracks, they just can't stop themselves from mucking around with it. This wasn't bad, brings some fond memories.

I don't even think it was that space ya know.. more the case of they did something subtle , that was clean.. well to most if they didn't know the complexity of it.

they remind me of a friend I have, when you hear his work you'd not thing it as particularly complex, but when you see him working on a tune you realise why it takes him so long to mix stuff (the track count is stupidly large and even splitting it into groups, it's still a task)

ah well you can see their work more in video form more so these days.

it's funny someone I used to know years ago did a cover of the song Cry . I was surprised when I saw him on TV, they G+C made the video for it. Although that person hhm was truly living the rock n roll lifestyle so I didn't have much time for him.

As I recall, I'm Mandy, Fly Me was a continuation of the bomb on an airplane story that was the foundation to Clockwork Creep on Sheet Music. In fact, you can hear a distant "Oh, no you'll never get me up on one of these again. Cause what goes up... must come... down down down down..."

there is a few people well known , obviously John Baker , Delia Derbyshire were well known.. did they ever show the programme on BBC worldwide about radio phonics workshop?

it was sad what happened to it, it was pretty much disbanded / downsized. They were converting the original material to a digital format , the last thing they were doing on it.

BBC used to do loads of records / cd's like that.. errm stuff like sound fx things for home movie makers.. a fair few of them turned up in hardcore / jungle tunes..hehe

where the radio phonics workshop originally was , maida vale.. I think it's the same building that the beatles did that world broadcast at. It's probably hhm 10-15 minute drive from me, quite near abbey road also.

I did hear a plan that the main bbc building in Wood Lane, there was a plan to sell it and turn it into flats..pity really it's an iconic building.. used to go there the odd time (a family member worked there)

they do tours of it, maybe maida vale also, a lot of bands did live sessions there. dunno if you know of things like "old grey whistle test" etc.
