1st Time using recording software... Soundcloud...

First off, I've Never used Any recording software.  What I'm using: Guitar > Line 6 pod hd500x > recording from hd500x USB port to the USB on my computer using Sonar Artist Software.  I recorded my 1st track.  Uploaded to Soundcloud BUT, when I hit PLAY I can barely hear my track...  I turn my stereo up almost all the way to hear it lol.  I obviously have some setting wrong...  it's like the output level isn't high enough or something.....   I need Suggestions and/or Opinions...  Thanks!  Maybe I should just get a Shure sm57-X2U and plug that straight into my computer... :/

    Welcome to the forum.
     
    Imagine if you will, that you have your guitar plugged into a fuzz box, then to your amp.  If you turn the gain all the way down on your fuzz box, it doesn't matter if your amp is on 11.
     
    Each audio stage in your chain probably had a gain control. as well as the track that you recorded on in Sonar, the buss that the track was sent to, and the output from the bus to your audio device.
     
    When you record, make sure to enable the meters on the track that you are recording to.  Check the level to ensure that you have a good setting that nearly (but never) peaks in the red.  This will probably involve adjusting the gain on your hd500x.
     
    Check the levels on each point in your signal chain.  Is your gain to the bus showing proper levels?  Is the output level to the audio device showing proper levels?  Your final stage (to the audio device) should peak just barely short of 0Db.  Look at the lanes in Console View to see all of your signal chain at one place.
     
    It gets more complicated when you start adding more tracks, but this should get you started.

    thanks.. I've tried a bunch of gain and level setting. On the line 6 pod hd500x there is no gain setting for the output level of the usb port...  I recorded a new track with every change I made and I still have the same problem....

    Hi. Isn't there a small volume knob on the backside of your POD? (It is on my HD300) What happens (if there is one) if you adjust that?
    And when you use you POD as your interface, I believe that there is some controller software for that. Try to locate it, open and see if there is any possibilities to adjust gain. (Maybe also a -10 / +4 button)

    ^^ Check for a software interface for your pod. I was recently playing with an old GNX3000 and the USB gain is actually via the software, which was at 10% by default. The output gains only controlled audio outs.

    Are the track meters reading when you arm the track? SONAR only monitors what is coming in, so let those meters be your guide (either by arming the track or echoing it) while adjusting gain from your pod into it.

    ^^^ Failing that, connect your Pod via it's analog outs into Sonar (assuming you have a suitable interface)

    on the HD500X there is no real USB gain level output.  I've tried a lot today and I have the same problem. I did make some changes in the HD500X that I really thought would work after reading the Line 6 advanced guide BUT, I still have the same problem...  The meters in Sonar are working and seem great when I lay down the track!  I record 1 track then do a playback through my amp and it does sound Great! BUT, then  when I export the track and upload it to soundcloud it does Not sound right at all and the volume is Extremely Low.   for example when using my stereo system to play the soundtrack.  my stereo has a volume level of (0-75)  pretty much for everything like tv, xbox computer I set it from 30-36.  when I play my track in sound cloud I turn it clear to 75 and even then I can barely hear it and it sounds terrible.  Also on my HD500X I changed the 1/4" out From: Amp to Line.  AND changed the FX Send/Return From: Stomp to Line. (that's what the line 6 advanced guide said to do)  That did increase the signal a lot & so much I had to go in the line 6 edit and turn down my mixer Db Down to -15db.   BUT, still I have the same problem............  I have also tried different Setup: Outputs in the HD500X settings menu and I still have the Same Problem............

    It sounds like the file is recording properly if meters are fine and playback in SONAR are fine.

    How are you exporting the file? Not much can go awry here but playback through an amp (and any effects that amp is doing) is a totally different ball of wax than a stereo.

    When you record your signal, is it coming from an amp channel (wet) or a clean (dry) out. If you are monitoring via the amp when recording/playing back you may be getting gain from that amp that a stereo wouldn't do (and may even be double gaining it on an amp, which is designed specifically for guitar frequencies).

    Simple check for this... Navigate to your project audio folder and open that wav file with Windows Media Player and use normal speakers or headphones (not the amp). Is it low volume?

    Just to eliminate some things we should know what is the actual dB level of the Project output and the exported wav. Your saying "it sounds great..." doesn't actually tell everything necessary.
    What doest the Master Bus meter show when you play back the project? When you import the exported wav back to SONAR (or play it in WMP as suggested By Mettelus) and play it back, how does the meter peak, how is the RMS level? Does the waveform look strong or very flat?
     
    Also, how are you exactly exporting? You have this far given very little details for us to make conclusions.
    In my experience there's very little that can cause exporting to fail, it's quite straightforward, IMO.
    It may be something so simple, that you don't even know the info of it could be important.

    I tried different things for the last 4 hours with still the same problem...   the db output levels average about -30 and the highest spike to -21.  the waveform looks strong.   to export I go to file > export > Audio >then I name the file, file type says wave.  I'm going to call tech support tomorrow about 4pm est....

    Those levels look way too low, which is why your exported file is low.
    When recording, your level should be somewhere in the -12 to -6 dB range. Once done recording, you can adjust the level using the volume and/or gain sliders.
    In my case, I usually have to lower the volume levels on most audio tracks when mixing because they're too loud relative to other tracks..

    Just for the record, Reno412, when people are finishing their songs, the levels and adding final FX, they aim at something between -3 dB and -0.2 dB. So, that's more than ten times louder than what you are exporting.
    I don't think you have any reason to call the tech support. Just get to know the basics of recording and mixing.
    You'll get there, no worries.

    +1, also if you have a good enough signal to noise ratio, you can try selecting the audio clip and Process->Apply Effect->Normalize to bring the peak up to -6 to -3dB or there abouts.

    Normalizing brings everything up/down equally (noise too), which is the reasoning for recording -12 to -6dB mentioned above. You want the biggest difference between signal and noise possible so when you mix the track the noise is more manageable.

    Thank you to everybody that helped me!!  called the free tech support,  TEEGO, Yes that was the problem  He put my master at 0db.  then added the FX Boost 11 to my master and it works Great now!! Thank You Everybody!  my output db is at -8 now....

    Thanks!  Now I have a Shure SM57-X2U to Play with also.   It actually Sounds Better with The SM57-X2U than using the HD500X USB Output into my computer...
