2 MIDI + (SPDIF or Audio) card recommendations?

I'm looking for a replacement for my WaveCenter PCI card, which is incompatible with Win7 64, to which I'll be switching shortly.

The WaveCenter has 2 MIDI IN, 2 MIDI OUT, and 1 SPDIF IN.  That's what I need in the new card.

What card(s) or usb interface would you recommend, which are known to work well with 64-bit Windows 7?

(For audio, I use a Delta44, and I hear it works fine in Win7 64).

Thanks!

    Actually, Rain Recording lists that card as being incompatible with Win7-32 as well, although they say it has working Vista drivers. I have no idea how (or if) they test or what constitutes incompatible. One big problem with Win7-64 is that it strictly enforces driver signing i. e. if the driver has not been submitted to Microsoft for testing and approval (and I assume a significant fee is involved here) and provided with a "signature" by Microsoft, it will not install. That is supposed to make it harder to install malware, and to provide a more Mac-like reliability for hardware. I suspect it will also provide further disincentives to manufacturers to support their older hardware, as well as a new revenue stream for Microsoft.

    The Wavecenter PCI card also has ADAT optical.  If you don't need the ADAT optical, then an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 will fill your requirements and the price is about $100 and there are Win 7 64-bit drivers.

    I'm curious - do you need the SPDIF input?  what exactly do you use it for?

    if you don't need it then go with a simple m-audio UNO MIDI/USB cable.  it's only about $35 or so.

    I use the SPDIF for recording my Pod Pro.

    Here's my current setup:

    - Triton Line Out 1/2 => Delta44 In 1/2
    - Triton Line Out 3/4 => Delta44 In 3/4 (I use this for my mic)
    - Triton MIDI Out/In => WaveCenter MIDI In/Out 1
    - Pod Pro MIDI Out/In => WaveCenter MIDI In/Out 2
    - Pod Pro SPDIF Out => WaveCenter SPDIF In

    If I stop using the Triton to send the mic to the Delta, that frees up the Delta's inputs 3 and 4, but then I have to use one of those to record the mic, leaving only one for the Pod Pro, and I'd rather record the Pod Pro in stereo than mono.  That's why I've been using the WaveCenter SPDIF In.

    Do you think it makes more sense to look for a 2x2 MIDI card w/ at least one audio input (for the mic), rather than a 2x2 MIDI+SPDIF?  Or should I buy the MIDI and Audio/SPDIF separately?

    Could I just buy a couple of cheap USB MIDI cables?  Will those work just as well as a "real" MIDI interface?

    Does MIDI via USB tend to have more noticeable latency than MIDI via PCI?

    ok.  then what I would do in your case is get the M-audio 24/96 like Fred suggested above.  it uses the same drivers as the delta 44 and you should even be able to sync them in the software if you wanted to use all of the audio inputs at the same time, too.

    +1 on the M-Audio 24/96 and UNO usb midi interface. I have both as I needed a similar set up with two midi inputs and outputs.

    I like the idea of the 24/96... The only thing is it only has 1x1 midi.  I suppose I could buy a cheap USB midi cable for the Pod Pro, since latency really isn't an issue with it.  Does that sound like a decent plan?

    Will all M-Audio 24/96 cards work with Win7/64bit or only more recent versions?

    yes, that's what I would do, get an inexpensive USB MIDI cable (but not too cheap, I'd go with something that's guarenteed to work with win7).

    even the older m-audio 24/96 cards should work with win7/64 - it's the drivers you have to worry about, not the hardware.  as long as m-audio has drivers for it then they all should work.  are you asking because you're thinking about ordering a used one off ebay?

    another option for the MIDI and SPDIF might be to look at an m-audio Delta 66.  the delta 66 is exactly the same card as the 44 but it has the digital I/O available on it and you can use the same drivers as the 44 and they both show up in the panel on the m-audio software (so does the 2496 if you have one of those).

    Yeah, I can try to get a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 secondhand, as well as a USB-MIDI cable that the owner says works with Win7 64.

    Getting another Delta would give me lots of audio inputs, but right now I only need one more audio (or spdif) input, and I need to get fast MIDI I/O for my Triton. The Delta 66 doesn't have MIDI, right?

    that's true, the D66 doesn't have MIDI, just SPDIF

    I might have to end up getting a non-PCI card, since my double-width video card blocks either one of the PCI slots or a bunch of other stuff.

    So that leaves two options: USB and PCI-E.

    The M-Audio Uno would take care of the MIDI.  Is that going to have lower latency than a $10 USB/MIDI cable?  Both are doing the same job, right?  Just converting MIDI to USB and back.

    I will also need an audio or SPDIF input as well.  I suppose I could use my PCR-A30 for the mic, but that would seem a little clunky and possibly slow.

    Is there a PCI-E card that does both MIDI and audio or spdif?  Or what other options do I have at this point?

    Just got one of the cheap ($10) MIDI to USB cables.  Works perfectly fine, with no noticeable latency.  So we can forget about buying something expensive!
