2013 - An Indie Rock Space Oddity

Here's a mix I have just completed for a local band that I recorded.  Thanks for listening, & let me know what you think.

Good creative mix with the rhythm guits bouncing left and right, but not so much that it's distracting.  Clean clear sound, nice and dry and in your face.  Well done!

Reminds me of a lot of bands I've recorded in years past (and some I've been a member of too, hehe).  Still gets my foot tapping. :)

    Hi Walt,

Thanks!  I haven't posted here for a while, but this is the first paid gig where I'm doing all the recording>production>mixing from beginning to end.  It's actually a refreshing change, because coming in only at the mix stage can be a bit frustrating at times.

The basic tracks for this were tracked live in the studio, so I think we managed to capture a really good energy that way...

The left-right emphasis was something the band wanted to specifically explore - It suited me, because it's always been a big part of my mix style.

Thanks again for listening & commenting!

    Hey Andrew
EXCELLENT job on the live tracks. You make it sound easy.  I'm also liking the dry tracks giving the song a gritty vibe.  The mix sounds great on my end excellent instrument separation.  Really nice job on giving the bass the space it needs with all the crunch from the guitars.  Cool, effects added on the vocals during the chorus. The song really rocks.  If I had to nit-pick and I'm being hard on you it would be the opening snare drum.  I would bring it back a smidge during the start of the song from 0:08-0:46. When all the instruments are kicking like around 0:48 the snare sounds great.  A SUPER job on the mix, KUDOS!

Thanks for the thoughtful comments Kev... great idea about the snare at the beginning - it kinda doesn't come up gradually like a usual snare build, so a bit of automation wouldn't go astray there.

The bass is multed & processed in parallel for the choruses - it's run through a distorted stereo amp setup in Guitar Rig 4 to add extra impact.
