2016.08 for Sonar Platinum crashes at the Start Screen
I just installed the new 2016.08 update. When I attempt to open "any" of my projects from the Start Screen (not including the File menu, which I haven't tried), a Fault Reporter window pops up. I tried several times. There's no point trying to pull the project out from the File menu. I don't want a work-around solution. I want my Sonar Platinum to operate like it's suppose to! This is ridiculous. I just purchased the Lifetime Updates. No Tech Support---no help. Very disappointed! How long will be before I can open Sonar? Until next month???

We recently posted an updated version of the 2016 08. You should install this and see if it resolves your issue with crashing on loading projects.

Similar problem - except I updated and Sonar would not open. No one as responded to my emailsm from last month. It would help if you will tell us the "crash" code (reason windows can't open file) My July version of Artist works great! After I ran a restore.

I just performed the latest update for 2016.08 Update 1, which unfortunately did not change anything. I got the same Fault Reporter and can't open Sonar Platinum. I decided to go back to "My Account" and reinstall the 'download mirror 1' from July's update, 2016.07 (22.7.0.41). In the future, (pending if another crash happens), I will follow the advice of "Capturing a Crash Dump" and send in the mini dump files to help the Cakewalk team. I'm going to wait until this gets cleared up before doing any updates. For now, my time has to be utilized for my projects and I'm glad I was able to restore July's update to keep the creative juices flowing. Thank you Cakewalk for at least keeping a record of all previous updates on My Account.

Well if no one sends in a dump file, it's unlikely we'd be able to fix it anytime soon. We're not able to repro and it seems it's something (util or other) that's in common with the systems running into this. Please run 2016.09 when it's released and then see if the error still occurs, capture a dump file if present and also check for a DatabaseExceptions.log in %appdata%\Cakewalk\Logs. Send us the log, thanks. Keith

Hi Roblaze, Just to clarify Keith's comment's above, we do have your info to this point - it's a different case assigned to another developer. Thanks for your help to this point. If you do get a chance to try 2016.09 though, I'll take any new logs or dumps that generates if it fails to clear up the issue. Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim (maybe share this with Keith), I installed the latest update 2016.09 (22.9.0.36) and still can't open any of my projects. I get the usual Fault Reporter from Windows; this time without the details for the crash-dump. Sometimes I'll get the box with the error details and sometimes not. I attempted to open my projects twice, so there's only two new mini-dump files. The CWDatabase.dll version is the same at 1.0.0.8 and I seen that the CWManaged.dll version changed to 1.0.0.25 on Sept. 28, 2016. I'm assuming these are correct. My account for Egnyte has been deactivated for some reason and I can't send you any files. I could send the files using Dropbox, but I would need an email address to invite you into my Dropbox account in order to get you the two new mini-dump files. I also have Gobbler, but I haven't been on Gobbler in a long time. Also it appears that when Microsoft Windows 10 did there global anniversary update. I had to reinstall the Command Center and XLN Audio for Addictive Drums just to get those programs to work again. Luckily I got the Command Center back up & running, otherwise I'd never be able to revert back to update 2016.07 to continue working on my projects. That's all for now. Thanks, Dan Robles (Roblaze)

Dan, the latest update is 22.9.0.30. Are you sure you have the latest update installed? There was a database fix in there. Edit. Sorry 22.9.0.36 is indeed the latest

Hi Noel, I did update to the latest update earlier today. It was 2016.09 (22.9.0.36). I looked through the list of available downloads and there was not a (22.9.0.30) on the list. I'm not seeing a .30 build anywhere, except from people mentioning it in the forum. If there was a (22.9.0.30), then it must have been removed from the list. Either way I'm not having any luck opening my projects. I reverted back to 2016.07's version at this time. So far I've tried versions, 2016.08, 2016.08 Update 1, and a few others that Jim Lima had me try. The new version is acting the same way...Can't open any projects. I'm going on month number 2 after paying for Lifetime Updates and not getting any results. Thanks, Roblaze

Sorry my bad. Build 30 was the pre release build. 36 is the latest. Have you tried the Shift launch to force personalization of SONAR?

Dan, So was there a DatabaseExceptions.log file in %appdata%\Cakewalk\Logs You can select the text above, then copy it and paste that into the Explorer's address bar and press the enter key to open that location. It which will replace %appdata% with your user app data folder. As far as Dropbox, you can share files with anyone with a link without having to add them to your account. https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/20 Keith

Throwing my .02 in on this. I'm having the same (or very similar issues as Roblaze). Existing projects crash when I go to open them in both August and September updates. I've opened a case #328686 but haven't received anything back but the automated response so far. If there are any files that I can send in to hopefully help with this matter, please let me know. Thanks, Tim

Tim, You can send us any dump files. If you have dropbox, you can post the link. https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/20 Most of the cloud based storage providers have a similar method of sharing. Also, have a look for any DatabaseExceptions.log file as my example animated gif shows. If you have one, feel free to attach it to your case if you have a way of doing that, otherwise, just PM me the file or link. Keith

Keith, Here is a link to the dump files - forums wouldn't let me post a URL so I PM'ed it to you. No log files were found that seemed related to Sonar. Definitely nothing in %AppData\Cakewalk\Logs. Let me know if there is anything else that I can send along to help with this issue. Tim

@Tim, Thanks, got em. Do you use Dell Backup and Recovery Utility (aka AlienRespawn)? The crash dump seems to point to a crash as a result of their overlay icon shell extension. (DBROverlayIcon.dll). Loading our media browser seems to load their shell extension (because we're using a Microsoft control) and it seems to crash when we ask for the icons for the list of items to display in the Media Browser. At least that's what the crash dump appears to show. It's possible this might not actually be the crash, but it's a place to start. You might try disabling the shell extension option if there is one in the Dell Backup and Recovery application. It may avoid the issue. Turn around on this happened to be faster because a few days ago support came to dev with a dump very similar to this and it took a few hours to get to where the fault was appearing (because it's buried down in .NET) See my post to Dan where I mention using nirsoft's Shell Extension Viewer to try to disable the DBROverlayIcon to avoid the crash. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html Keith

Dan, got the dumps you posted, 2 of them are the same issue Tim has. If you use the Dell Backup and Recovery utility (also known as AlienRespawn), please turn off the overlay icons. That seems to be what's crashing at project load. The overlay icons are handled by a shell extension dll. Shell extensions extend functionality of Explorer and while they can add useful functionality, some have been known to cause problems. The theory is that since we added the plugin database using a .net managed layer, the shell extension also seems to be using .net and due to some interop issue crashes when we load our media browser and request the file icons from the file system, which then asks the shell extension to retrieve it's special icons (presumably for backup status?) So, if you can't find an option to turn off the shell extension, then download NirSoft ShellExView a free utility that displays all shell extensions and allows them to be enabled or disabled. Not sure what it will be called, but the dll name is DBROverlayIcon.dll <update> The util is useful but first thing you'll want to do is to go to Options and check 'Hide All Microsoft Extensions'. Otherwise it's an overwhelming list! Then, you can look at the Filename column (drag the headers right edge out to read the rest of the path) to check which entries correspond with DBROverlayIcon.dll. Once you find those, select the row(s) and click the red dot in the toolbar to disable the extension. In my example I disabled TortoiseSVN as I don't have the Dell extensions. If you disable the wrong extension, just click the green dot. Let us know, thanks. <update2> We were able to repro on a Dell system and found that it's necessary to disable all three instances of DBROverlayIcon via the utility, then use Ctrl + E to reload Explorer. Two of them are icon overlays, the third is a context menu.

Keith, Uninstalling the Dell Backup and Recovery and a restart worked for me. I was able to open five different projects with no crashes at all. Thanks for your quick reply to my issue.

Tim, Actually while you can uninstall the utility, it's not required. Using the Shell Extension Viewer and turning off the 3 entries for DBROverlayIcon and then restarting Explorer (Ctrl + E from the util) does the trick. We confirmed in the office today on a system we were able to repro on. Dan (and anyone else running into this), please follow either approach to work around the issue. We'll be sure Support is fully aware of the issue and work-around (most likely will be a KB article) We're also working with Dell to try and get this resolved on their side. Keith
