***2/11/11 Update - Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen Cover-featuring Bandontherun19 on vox)

Cover of Bruce Springsteen's 1975 hit Born To Run.  I wanted to do a rock song with some more diverse instrumentation to work on further development of my mixing skills.  This song was of interest because it is one of the greatest rock songs of all time and includes a number of clean and processed guitars along with a horn section, organ, drums, bass, glockenspiel, etc... Was a great learning experience pulling it together and Robby capped it off with an excellent vocal performance.  Drums are Superior Drummer, Bass is Trillian, Horns are Garritan JABB, my Yamaha Motif and guitars are all recorded with Podfarm 2.5.  The sax solo was performed by Robby using Mr. Sax T.

Please feel free to comment.  Hope you enjoy.

    It's pretty f'ing good Mark :-)

I mean, yeah, I did the vocals? And they're good? But the instrumentation? I mean, "just damn....!?"

One of the all time great rock songs especially from the Boss.  This falls into the category of EPIC SONG.

Having lived my early years as a native of NJ and being there when Bruce was gigging local clubs around S Jersey and Asbury Park, he has always been one of my favorite rockers and songwriters.

This is a good cover. Even the vox are a pretty decent approximation of Bruce's classic "I could care less" drawl.

The instrumental parts are well done also. This is not the easiest song to cover and do well, so KUDO's to everyone involved.  Damn fine SAX!!!!  I can see the sweat on Clarence's face even now....!

the funniest thing about this song is that the New Jersey legislature was actually considering officially making this song the NJ State song...... until someone suggested they consider the words.

" Baby this town rips the bones from your back it's a death trap a suicide rap we gotta get out while we're young......"   didn't quite make the State of NJ sound like the place you might want to be..... just saying.... so they dropped the idea of Born to Run as the state song.

I must admit though... it is some mighty fine word crafting.

Good job guys.  You pulled of a good cover of an EPIC SONG!!!

It's the Garden state! And when you're coming up 95? When you see the sign saying, "Welcome to NJ?" Just throw down the window and stick your head out! And breath in that "Garden Goodness..." :-)

    Hi Mark & Robby,
one of the greatest rock songs of all time

I absolutely agree with your assessment and you guys have done an amazing job of recreating the original!

I grew up in NJ and used to play at the Stone Pony quite frequently and this was THE anthem back then.

    Great job!

    Herb,
Appreciate the comment and the interesting story.   Leave it to a politician to try to pass something and then bother to read what's in it after the fact.  Funny...

    Gary,
Thanks for the listen.  That must have been a blast playing there back in the day.   Just Googled it and looks like they still have up and coming groups playing there.

    Ed,
I had more bass in my master mix and tweaked it down 2 db in master stage because I thought it was too much.  Maybe I will had back a db and see how that works.  Thanks for the comment.

    Regards

Awesome guys, I've heard many attempt it, but I've never heard anyone do Bruce as well as Robby. Outstanding job on the instruments as well, tasty old school guitar tone and vocals make this a real ear tickler

Herb...he's finally finding his place as a vocalist?  He may be one of the craziest people I've ever not met, but I think he found his place years ago.  :)  Just sayin'.  :)

You guys are too kind :-) Mark is a freaking genius when it comes to recreating "the sound...." He really has a gift for it. So for a singer, like me? Well... I could use many analogies? Let's just say it's like someone who enjoys "self exploration..." Who's locked up with an automatic milking machine? There's a visual for you? Try getting that one out of your head.

I'm also working on a new original, as well as a classic country cover w/Mr. 999... It seems we go together like peas and carrots.

Grant - Thanks for the listen, Robby did do a pretty awesome interpretation of the Boss.   He is a little like Rich Little in his ability to project other styles, although his own style is pretty good too...   Liked your recent Rocker tune, good stuff.

Jeff - Thanks for the comment.  Looking forward to your Blondie metal cover with the vocals...

Herb - I agree, I think it is a good thing to branch out from your comfort zones every now and then.  Sometimes you get some magical results.

James - Thanks for that, spent a good bit of time working on all the little details on this one.

Rimshot - Thx, I will post an update with the little bass dip removed.  My computer speakers are a little bassy and I cut a little too much.  Appreciate the listen.

Janet - Thanks for the comment.   It was a lot of fun doing this song..and I think this was one of my better mixes to date.   I liked your recent dedication to your friend and mentor.  That was really nice.

Daryl - thanks for the listen.   I appreciate the comment on the production.

Robby - Too funny, definitely not a genius.  It helps not to have any original thoughts of my own when doing these covers;)  How is that country song coming along BTW?

Scott - thanks for the vote of confidence even though you weren't able to hear it;)

Warren - Thanks, so glad you enjoyed the song.  It was a real blast to work on.

Lynn - One of these days I'll post and original too...  Look forward to a cover from you.

Danny - Thanks for the comment, I will definitely boost up the bass a bit on this.   I want to thank you again for the mix video tutuorial.   The information you provided was absolutely invaluable in getting this song right and also helping with the whole process and my mix template.  I have read a ton of books on the subject but learned more in 60 minutes of your videos than I did in years of reading.  The practical application sort of brought everything together for me.  Looking forward to a few more tutorials on new topics.  Thanks again.

Vox were great. The music sounded way too in the box for my rock tastes. Especially the drums.

Needs some phatness on the bottom.

Maybe I am just sick of this song (though I admit it is a great one!)....

You're quite welcome Mark. Thank YOU for giving me the chance to teach you some of this stuff. :) Yeah I've read a ton too and always feel like I come away with well...just about nothing. Like I always tell everyone when I talk about teaching...

"You can be the most intelligent person on the planet and use all sorts of science and big words to get your point across while flaunting degrees and everything else. If a person doesn't really learn from you by example using techniques and real life experiences while literally being shown these techniques to where they don't "just read" about them any longer, you're not cut out to be a teacher. If students can see and experience the cause and effect of this stuff for themselves, you're doing your job. Seeing by experience is not only believing, it's learning." (even if I do have a funny accent and have a bit too much fun during my video lessons lol)

Thanks for the kind words and the props brother. I thought you did a good job on this without me getting involved. Like I said...once I fired up Bruce's version and listened, I prefered yours. We just needed to straighten out that template and simplify a bit. Good job man. :)
