"3 o'clock Blues" - Recorded at Sun Studio!!

Hey y'all!

So me and the guys I jam with on the weekends had an incredible roadtrip to Memphis, TN a few weeks ago and did a quick recording session at Sun Studio - we did a 4 hour session (only about 2 1/2 hour of actual playing time) and knocked out live recordings of 9 songs.  I won't bother you with all of the details, but definitely the trip of a lifetime!!

I'm in the process of getting everything mixed down and we're gonna print up a CD.  Would you mind taking a listen to this song (our version of B.B. King's classic) and give me your thoughts on the vocal levels (and anything else)? The guys in the band have different viewpoints on the appropriate level of the vocals in the mix so I'd love to get some outside opinions.

It won't take much to make this song a solid winner.  I'd turn the lead vocal down by 1 or 2db and leave the rest alone.  The vocals are good enough to stand out, and so is the lead guitar.  Did you record this to tape or hard drive?  Whichever, it sounds good.  You might consider lowering the reverb a bit to make it sound more like an old time blues song, and it would also make the overall mix sound warmer.  However, this has a solid foundation, so you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get this to sound terrific.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Thanks Lynn! I appreciate the opinion on the vocals. Down a smidge was my thought too.

It was recorded to hard drive.

Actually no reverb added. The drum mics did pick up a lot of natural reverb (and there is also a room mic added in there, just a tiny bit added to the mix). Considering the room we were in, I was happy to have some room sound!

    Thanks again...

I'll bet it was a blast recording in a place where rock and roll history was made...and for that matter.....born.

Recording 9 songs in 2.5 hrs sounds like the right way to do it too. Have the tunes rehearsed and lay them down with few retakes.  Get that live vibe and let the chips fall where they may.

If you want to knock the vox back a few db's no problemo.... but there were times I thought they sat just about right.

Question: Back then , didn't they tend to use a lot of slap back echo on the voice....I found myself kinda wanting to hear slap back rather than verb.

I'd use an envelope to control the volume on the vox. When he sings low it's right....as he starts to climb a bit in volume, maybe that could be eased off a bit.

The main thing I would caution it trying to make it sound too slick and produced. It's Sun and it's raw. Let it keep that attribute in it.

Thanks for the listen and feedback Herb! Yep, definitely a blast and definitely felt the energy of that room.

Yeah slap back echo was a Sam Philips/Sun Records trademark. I tried to emulate that a little bit. Using the VX-64 I set some delay roughly tempo-synched to around an 1/8th note, 0 feedback, and then pulled up the level until it was noticable then back it off a bit. For more of a 50s vibe I would have brought it up more probably. Didn't add any reverb, but it's a small room and lots of bleed in the other mics (especially the drum overheads - vintage RCA ribbon mics).

Totally agree to not make it sound too slick!! Live and raw brother...

    Thanks again...

Wow getting to record where history was made.  That must have been a real treat!
I have got to agree with Herb -- keep it raw.  One thing that I love so much about the late '40's, '50's, and early '60's Blues are its idiosyncracies.  Some of the old Blues guys had unusual timing (Jimmy Reed), some made a lot of missed notes but recovered nicely (Hot Rod Taylor), some mmmummbled and cut off their words (Lighting Hopkins) but that is what made the Blues so much fun, gave it its heart, and made the music flow.

Great job on this one Dave!!  It sounds like the real Blues to me.

I dunno if it gets much cooler than that. It must have been an awesome experience indeed. Cool tune Dave.

Sounds good Dave :-) Blues are what everything is built on... I'm not familiar w/Sun? But it sounds like it's a little nicer than Smiladonstudios? (my living room.)

Did you mix these tracks at home after you recorded them at the studio?  The drums are way too dominant (unless the drummer paid for the session), the vox reverb sounds very one-dimensional and I'd try for a fuller sound with the rhythm guitars and bass.

I can tell that the sonics of the raw tracks are good but I think that this mix will require more labor for it to reach its full potential.

    Cheers,
    J

Robbie surely you're kidding about not having heard of Sun Studio? The birthplace of rock and rock??!! Where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison got their start??  But it sounds like I might need to pack up the band and do a recording session at Smiladonstudios for comparison....

Thanks Scotty we were definitely happy it captured the vibe of us playing live together. We just get together and play on Friday nights every week or two and wanted it to sound like us and I think it does!

J - they were mixed at home. I'll check out the drum levels - I know they are prominent in the mix and I want them to be that way but it may be a bit too much. Thanks for the input.

Sun Studio... now that is cool... I lived in Memphis in the 50's... the 1'st concert I ever saw was Jerry Lee Lewis at the Skating Rink on Summer Ave... I know you guys must have felt the spirit...

A great combo of a studio/live sounds, makes for an easy enjoyable listen. Vox didnt bother me too much. Found the lead guitar licks a little mundane at times in terms of lacking expression, but such a minor crit.

    Great work,

Thanks for the listen and input Cian.

Ha, Mark, well I'm not about being your hero, but it definitely was a cool experience! Some people have asked me "how did you get to do that?" and actually they do tours during the day but after hours anyone with $150/hour can record in the studio. They'll mix it for you, but he didn't mind just burning the files for me so I could take 'em home and mix 'em myself.

Alright Robby, we'll expect first class treatment - we'll be there in about an hour....

You know, Dave, your recordings and mixes are always so great that I was listening for something else.  It took a couple songs and listens to kick me in the head and realize how cool this is.  I like Folsom Blues a lot!  I'll try to listen to more later todauy.  Gheesh, some people have all the fun!!  Ha, though you'd get it out of your system but now you're really hooked!  How did they mic the drums?  They sound great!
