32 bit and 64 bit plug ins
hello, i am uncertain of the difference between 32 and 64 bit plug ins. in my limited understanding, 64 bit operating systems allow for much greater ram whereas x32 oper systems are limited to 4 gigs. how does this affect a plug in or soft synth? this seems relevant since a lot of x32 stuff is being sold off very inexpensively lately. i assume that is because 64 bit versions are on the way. what are the pros and cons for someone running sonar x1 x64 with the choice of a particular plug in or soft synth in either 32 or 64 versions? thanks, matt edit: please excuse me if this topic has been discussed already. i searched and could not find direct answers.

You can run 32bit plugs in a 64bit OS but it requires bitbridge or jbridge. Sadly some plugs don't perform in this scenario.

thanks bapu. is the need for a 'bridge' the only difference between the 32 and 64 bit versions of the same plug in? is it just a stability issue or is there an audible difference as well?

At the moment I only use 32bit plugs in a 32bit OS but as I understand it a 64bit plug probably won't sound any better but rompler plugs (with large samples) will load using more memory ina 64bit OS. Others would need to weigh in on whether plugs like a compressor or EQ should/would/could sound better because of 64bit processing/drivers. I suspect not.

i'm concerned that instability would make 80% savings become a 20% waste of money.

There will not be a difference in sound. Stability depends on the plugin. If you are refering to the Miroslave CE offer you have recently posted about. I can say its very stable for me using bitbridge, as is IK' Sample tank.

thanks glyn, miroslov is a concern and t-racks is also, as are many of these deeply discounted plug ins and synths that are popping up almost everyday. that kind of thing usually only happens in the retail world when they're trying to unload soon to be antiquated stuff.

There is a post that indicated 64 bit versions of T-Racks will be released soon. http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2266716

Yup 64 bit is coming out this Month for AmpliTube with our 3.5 update. After that T-Racks and a few other surprises in the future as well. :D

Yeh but will these new 64-bit versions be able to run on a 32-bit OS? Or do these come with a 32-bit installer, similar to Sonar.

In reality,if you have a 32bit OS, or if you have a 64bit OS and are afraid of compatibility issues, then use the 32 bit version of the plugin. If you have 64bit OS, use the 64bit version (for greater access to memory etc). If no 64bit version available, paniuc not, use the 32bit under Bitbridge or, if necessary jBridge. BTW, jBridge can also do 64bit to 32bit. Confusing, ain't it Cheers, Jerry
