Anchor Up Captain (Tim Wilkinson)

I'll leave you my cellphone, my laptop, my bank account
But I'll take your library to keep me good company
I'm goin where there's no more halfwit celebrity
Captains of industry bullsh1t just sickens me

Anchor up captain, this island's not for me
I've a hankering for a cave down in Antipody
Where the walls are all painted with fine summer ladies
And visions of winter are banished to Hades
Anchor up captain this island's not for me
Need my own little kingdom in the warm southern sea
Anchor up captain this island's not for me

No CCTV pretendin it's keepin me free
No filthy self-interested scum of authority
Those swine are just one small chromosome further than kelp
Callin poor people "clients" when all we need is their help

Anchor up captain, this island's not for me
I've a hankering for a cave down in Antipody
Where the walls are all painted with fine summer ladies
And visions of winter are banished to Hades
Anchor up captain this island's not for me
Need my own little kingdom in the warm southern sea
Anchor up captain this island's not for me

Ain't gonna sing "Sailing", nor "Mull of Kintyre"
Just wriggle my toes in the sand, make tea on the fire

I'll sleep on the beach with my raft and my hat
With fishbones and mirrors and trinkets and tat
I'll leave you the wreckage of what was my life
Exposed every low tide along with my ex-wife

O anchor up captain, this island's not for me
I've a hankering for a cave down in Antipody
Where the walls are all painted with fine summer ladies
And visions of winter are banished to Hades
Anchor up captain this island's not for me
Need my own little kingdom in the warm southern sea

Anchor up captain, this island's not for me
I've a hankering for a cave down in Antipody
Where the walls are all painted with fine summer ladies
And visions of winter are banished to Hades
Anchor up captain this island's not for me
Need my own little kingdom in the warm southern sea
Anchor up captain this island's not for me
Please, anchor up captain this island's not for me
Please, anchor up captain this island's not for me
Please...

James (and Tim),
Oooh boy, this was a fun one.  Love the whole vibe.  Great lyrics, the acoustic guitar fit perfect and of course the whole thing is livened up with your great electric playing.  Can't wait for the CD but before that I will go dig into the previous ones you guys have finished.  Looking forward to it.  Hope all is well with you and yours.

Hiya James,

I could have sworn I'd listened to this last week... Did you upload a new version?

Thinking about it... I think you added some backing vocals... Not too sure...

And I think there is a slight change at 2:30-ish, "Ain't gonna sing 'Sailing,'"

Again... not sure... You're really testing my memory dood haha

cheers

Hi Andy, yes, uploaded a new mix this afternoon, sorry! Made a few tweaks, and realised I had the EQ turned off on the 'answer' vocal track in the middle 8 (that's probably the difference you can hear). Thanks for checking it out again

Great sounding tune!  Wonderful lyrics that take me into the persons head if that makes sense? To get away from it all would be quite nice!

I love the way the music flows on this track. The guitar is definitely one of the stars shining here. My only small nit would be the vocals at the beginning are ever so slightly out of tune...and it all seems to go well after that. I can't put a finger on it...so maybe this won't be helpful...but the vocal as a whole seems to not quite be gelling with the rest of the mix..almost as if it's an independent thing aside from the rest. I'm talking about the main vox and not the background. I wish I could be more specific, but maybe this helps. Almost as if there needs to be more glue holding everything together.

I love this song. Great melody, singing,  and lyrics. Very cool vocal arrangement and sound as well.
Distortion guitar chords could use some warmth - they seem a bit thin.
Would love to hear a deep tom and tambourine in the 2nd half.
The lead vocal is outstanding.

Is there a bass? I was listening on headphones but I don't think I hear a bass. I seem to remember making the same comment on another of your excellent tunes, so if you are anti-bass on your songs, then fair choice, still a great song.

cheers,

Nope, no bass . Not 'anti-bass', just trying to keep the songs to voice and two guitars by and large. We'd like to perform these one day. Might have to have the audience help out on backing vocals for this one...

Yup, as expected it sounds great.   Cool arrangement with two instruments and layers of vocals, works so well.    The call and response vocals are great, as are the falsetto vibrato'd "woohs".    You sure do a lot with two guitars and voice. I'd be tempted to use a slightly less distorted guitar tone for the leads, but that's completely subjective.

Oh... and the lyrics are @#$% great.

James,

Great work, really like your songs and productions.   This one, I might consider adding some percussion, maybe some timpani fills in the second verse.   Later, maybe a simple kick and tambourine.

Thanks Rik. That's where my budget set-up lets me down I'm afraid. Nice guitar, cheap condensor mic, untreated room.

Hi, James, how are you, my friend?  Hope you're doing well!

It's always a pleasure to hear something new from you and Tim, and this is certainly another fine addition to your outstanding catalog!

Excellent songwriting, playing, and heartfelt vocals, as always, and I really like how the layered vocals float over and around the bare bones instrumentation, giving the mix an authentic, traditional "Sea Shanty" feel.

Another top notch production, James, and sincere best wishes for the new CD, I hope you sell a ton of them when it's released!
