'Idiot's Lantern'

Hi folks, here's a new tune from me. They're a bit rare this year

https://soundcloud.com/jyemz/idiots-lantern

Weird little video if you prefer;

Big thanks to my cohorts on this; Daryl Greenway on vocoder synth, Tim Wilkinson who did the original vocal parts and lyrics, and Preston Richardson on drums (Distant Towers, Single-Minded Soldier Studio)

Very good work James, loved the intro guitar lick and all the variation throughout....yeah, that synth vocal was a complimentary nice touch. Did you also play the bass on this? Everything sounded very good here on headphones.

Cool tune! I liked it a lot. Good performances all around as usual. My only complaint was that I couldn't make out many of the words.

Everybody knows what they are doing. A pleasure to go along on the journey.

Kick on the kick drum, to my ears in the headphones, is almost too punchy - you might remove some high mids from the kick? It could totally be a genre thing, where you want the beater that in-your-face, so what do I know. But the kick beater is distracting my enjoyment of the guitars a little.

The snare on the other hand is top shelf.

Lovely, not often heard amalgam of spacey effects, keyboards, and really great guitar tones, all presented in an arrangement that holds interest.

    well done y'all!

    Cool guitar playing,

great mix - spacey floatey feel to me in the slower parts

reminds me a bit of the french duo 'Air' but with a bit more edge

intrigued to hear what the words you're singing are as well.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hey, James,

This is absolutely killer!  I knew I was going to like this as soon as the opening guitar riff kicked in!

This one is an emotional roller coaster with lots of great textures and elements woven throughout, along with some really cool tempo changes in exactly the right spots.

The keyboards are a great background, your guitar tone selection and playing really shines on this, full of tasty licks, and Preston's drums are excellent.  The SI bass sounds very convincing and sits perfectly in the well textured mix, and the Vocoder stuff was a really nice touch as an extra instrument.

Fantastic work, James, well done, this is a real gem, my friend!

    Have a great weekend!

I'm not fond of the vocoder myself, I think it might be good if it weren't as heavy, but that's just my personal opine.

Just to add to my gushy comment above ... as usual I've listened to this track over and over, and I think I'm coming down on emerald soul (Tom) 's observation. I think the snare is a little high, love the bass drum 'cause it holds the power of the whole feeling of this work and although you class the vocal as a back drop to the instrumental, I've got a feeling it should be higher in the mix with a little more space to let the listener get the whole spectrum .. that said I still enjoy the power of this ...but then again,I suppose I would

    James,

Awesome work as usual.   The guitar work is outstanding.    I think the mix sounds really good but then I like the drums pretty heavy on tracks like this when they sound good, and they do.    Had a few listens through...Good stuff.

Great track, the stereo width on the kick is a tiiiny bit annoying in headphones.

Epic guitar sounds! Also loved the unexpected vocoder vocal which really fits the song.
Great song changes keep it interesting throughout - especially liked the one at 2:32 - drum part at the end of that section reminded me of Rush. Guitar work a little Steve Howe influence. Solid Bass/Drums underpinning it all. On my third listen.

    Great job all round guys.
