'On The Edge'

My friend and collaborator Tim Wilkinson writes some fine lyrics, and these are some of his finest IMO. This is an edited version of the final track on my recently completed 'Weirdstone' project.

https://app.box.com/s/gzmuj6a04hh7c0lasv55

Tim wrote the song, sang and played acoustic guitar, I did the rest.

The king of glass, he sleeps beneath the hill
The place is marked by an apple tree still
And I have had so many names, across the ages of the earth
But you can call me Cadellin, for what it's worth
I'm standing at an angle to the universe
On the Edge, life's on the Edge

Heartstone hides an edge so fine
Split the line with shards and nine
Tap the time with a black flint knife
Play Old Harry till it comes to life
On the Edge

I left them lying close apart
The king of glass and his men each with a frozen heart
Stone-cold effigies on the tomb of the sculptor's art
Beating the bounds of the ground they keep
Taking a deep breath, before they leap
From the Edge, Life's on the Edge

Beyond the bull-sound roar of joy
Moon-lust and the fall of Troy
The king of glass in his cave of gold
Gains his gravity, loses his hold
On the Edge

Beautiful James! Love the guitars and the lyrics really are as good as you say. Usual great mix. Love the added piano towards the end; that adds a lot of weight, if you know what I mean.

Outstanding indeed. Reminiscent of early Genesis, but more cleanly recorded. Love the subtle percussion, and well, the subtleness of everything in there. Classy.

Thanks Dan! Glad you liked that piano, I was looking for something akin to Peter Gabriel's 'In Your Eyes' there, to add a little more gravitas at the end.

Nice job James and Tim very reminiscent of early Genesis, I am thinking Nursery Crime - Harlequin

Heh, no "Screw you" any more.  Sounds like you changed things without losing any of the song's feel - good job!   I know I made the comment (and, I guess, others did too?) that after Headless Cross it just seemed a bit jarring, but not bad!  This IS better though IMO.

great composition, and a great feel.

it was very quiet, i assume this was not mastered?
it sounds better turned way up...
it is reminscent of gabriel on some of genesis early mellow stuff..

at 5:21 it is getting long, for only having 1 or 2 basic chord changes...
    that said,
it has a nice reflective and calm vibe,
    so it works over time.

i wonder if a key modulation in the entire middle section, dropping back down to the current key, for the final reprise,
    wouldn't be a better choice?

    really nice tune

This is a wonderful song!  Tim's voice has the texture that sends this song over the top and delivers the lyrics so well.  Even though this song is a little quiet, as Bat says, it breathes and has good dynamics which gives this life.  Kudos to the both of you!

I really like this!  Love Tim's voice, haven't heard any in a while!  love the electric lead and the pad.  acoustic sounds really nice, too.

I think I agree with bat that I could have used a modulation or something to shake it up a little for the length of the song.

but all in all, really really nice work!

What a great tune and performance.  If I am supposed to know what the lyrics mean, I missed the boat.  HOWEVER, I know they must mean something because they are so good.  This was really a treat to listen to.   I sincerely mean that.  Love his voice!!

Thanks Bats, that's nice of you. Not mastered no, I never do with individual tracks, just a smidge of compression on the master bus. Not sure about the modulation thing..I enjoy the song as it is, and there seem to be enough changes to keep it interesting. Hey, Pink Floyd have one chord intros longer than this song..

What a great tune and performance.  If I am supposed to know what the lyrics mean, I missed the boat.  HOWEVER, I know they must mean something because they are so good.  This was really a treat to listen to.   I sincerely mean that.  Love his voice!!

Thanks Warren The best lyrics can mean many things to many people, so no explanation necessary. He does have a great voice eh?
