I like the trance sounding start, great guitar, piano and sound effects go well together. I'm a guitar player wanna be and can't sing (among other things) so I tend to focus on the guitar, its tone, style and how it is used in the song. I think the guitar shines in this piece.
Now the following is minor and coming from someone new at this game, and having my own issues with the final mix results so don't give this comment much weight. My immediate impression was the bass was a little booming and possibly could be of a softer tone, though played very well, and drums just a tad too tart, but may just need a little less vol. Drums are my weak point so I may be off on this, I can't even tap my foot without stepping on the other foot, thank goodness for these machines. Very creative piece and and as I listen to it again, I really like the guitar, reminds me of my style, except my fingers don't move as fast. Very well done. PS what guitar and effects are you using?  capt

Thanks a lot Cap! Appreciate the comments & crits. Guitar is my '79 Les Paul Standard through a Boss Br-8 in which I have many custom patches saved. The Boss COSM FX are superb IMO which is why I hung on to the BR-8 even though I don't use it's recording functions. It's an interface/modeler in my set-up now.

Sounds good on lappy speakers. Glad to see the project is still alive and well - I sent you a message about it via your site during your forum absence and never heard anything back, so I thought it might have been shelved.

Hi Paul, thanks a lot. I never got that message, I'm sorry about that. Bandzoogle did some major updating recently, maybe it got lost. Back into the project now that the evening are dark and long

No worries, I just wanted to know if it was still going as I was looking forward to hearing it in its entirety and you hadn't been around these parts for a while to ask.

That's cool, I appreciate you taking an interest

Wow! Excellent job on this. I love the little breakdown in the middle with the piano. And then the way the rest of the instruments come in and mimic it for a couple bars. Then that friggin solo kicks in and tears it up! Very nice soloing! This was a nice musical journey that you took me on. Great job James!

Love the guitars and bass. The tones are great! Not loving the drum kit though. Sounds too boxy overall, and really narrow, like it was recorded in a closet with a single mic (you didn't really do that, did you?).

Love the creativity and the song itself, as usual James :)

Regards,
Dan

Thanks Dan! No, I didn't record any drums actually There's a cajon looped pattern (which is a box ) and some SD2 stuff overlaid.

Hey there!  Thank you for your commentary over on my post (Reimagine).
Re 'Shuttingslow'.

I'm a big fan of Mike Oldfield AND Alan Parsons. I feel you have your own 'like-minded' thing going on here on this one.  It's a great piece - very moody, very dark. I like it as a composition.

Your instrumental tones are great, on their own, but there is a bit of mud going on in the mix. You'll have some 'dipping' to do here and there to fix that (usually in the 400hz range ... on almost everything except E-Guitars, usually - not a hard 'n fast rule).

The drums - well, that's the deadest part of your mix.  The snare has got to bite and come up several natchos.  The high-hats - perfect where they are.  The Kick and Bass have to be a little more balanced but the bass itself might be a tad too high in the mix.  Try bringing it down a bit (volume) and freq-tweaking it or going for the saturation/distortion/harmonics enhancements to keep it 'in there' while the kick and the snare come up.

I am also linking our 'trove' of (apparently 'world renown') mixing guides for you to pick and choose from.  Enjoy, and I hope they help. The one I created (resourcing various articles over the years) called, "Mixing and Frequency Guide - 2013" has been downloaded over 12,000 times over the last 7 or 8 years!  I don't even know who's doing the linking, but I get like, a hundred downloads of that a day!  No kidding.
