'Shuttlingslow/The Headless Cross'
Hi all, I might be pushing my luck with this one 'cos it's nearly 8 minutes long... https://soundcloud.com/jyemz/shuttlingslowthe-headless-cross This is a 2-part 'epic' describing a battle and the aftermath, inspired by chapters from 'The Weirdstone of Brisingamen' by Alan Garner. Bass on the first section is by Ed Kocol. Tim Wilkinson wrote the lyrics, sang and played acoustic guitar on the 2nd section. I did all the other stuff. Thanks for any listens at all...

I didn't like the book at all, but I like your song a lot. I thought everybody played very well on it. My only suggestion is to thicken it up more in the mids if you can so that the recording quality is as good as the song. A lack of mids seems to be a problem with every other recording I listen to in this forum, which leads me to wonder if most people are using some kind of mastering plug-in that's sucking out the mids or something. Try this, open the web page for your recording, and in second web page bring up this Pat Metheny tune at YT and go back and forth between the two to compare the sound quality. Metheny's recordings and videos almost always sound as close to perfection as anyone could get. See how thick and rich and airy everything is, and try to master your recording to match it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVBoDx_1dTc

that voice at the end really has soul! Is that you? I liked both parts but am more partial to the second part. I can't say how the production is, but from a compositional point of view I'd have to give two thumbs up. Especially, both parts have prelude of sorts that eases the listener in to the meat of the song. And also, they seem to be a good pairing,as one leads more or less to the other. :D:D

Kenny - thanks very much, these tracks are a few years old now but I'd never had the chance to put them together as I'd intended. Glad you enjoyed it! David - no, that's my old friend Tim Wilkinson singing. Glad you enjoyed the composition, I used up a lot of brain cells working out the chords to get from the first section to the 2nd... Adrian - thanks a lot, this was part of a dreaded 'concept album' I did a few years ago - can't shake off the 70's!

It brought Alan Parsons to mind, only better. I'd vote for the bass lower in volume just a hair. It's louder than the guitars when the guitars are being featured. Check the 4:05 area? Otherwise just a super mixing job here, and fine composing as well. The second part, "Headless Cross" I presume - just lovely. Great panning on those thumping stormdrum thingies. Vocal is so good, love that guy's voice. Ridiculous idea: Swap the two songs. The Headless Cross/Shuttlingsong. Probably makes no sense re: the original story, but would make more sense to a casual listener, or at least me at any rate. Slow one, then fast one. really cool work! -Tom

Got a great late 70's Kansas vibe on this one. Crisp highs, maybe some more mids to fill out the sound spectrum. Keep it up!

boy, that's a big arrangement! i dig the 'pushing forward' meter and approach... cool solo guitar stuff....the delay effect, seems stereo....? reminds me a bit of some of roger waters' solo work... i think i like the 2nd half the best, just because of the vocal.

Not bad. The drumming (and the sound) was very good. The acoustic guitar, keyboard, and vocals were recorded pretty well too. I didn't care for the tone of the lead guitar. It sounded like a really old amp sim from the 90s, but they playing wasn't bad. I think the recording could use some better bass playing though. It was awfully basic and a little redundant. Overall, it was a pretty good song though.

I'm not familiar with the book and I didn't read your intro to the song but listening to it conjured up in me a vision of a battle followed by a somber view of the battlefield afterwards. Which, as it turns out, was just what the song was all about. So nice storytelling there. Very good musicianship throughout and nice transition. Guess I liked the 2nd part better because it's more melodic. Very good vocal.

I love long, ambitious songs. It took a couple minutes to get there, but there were some really nice phrases in the solo on the first part. I agree, the tone sounds a little old, but I thought the whole first half instrumentation had that same kind of style, so maybe it fits? Really like the second half - works and sounds great. Nicely done, really.

Eight minutes, that's barely an introduction for a diehard old Genesis fan like me. 😉
I liked the contrast between the two parts and especially the guitar tone on part two. The vocals - oh yes - what's not to love about those. The slightly accentuated pronounciation and the light and shade reminded me of Peter Gabriel and I really can't pay you a higher compliment than that.
A very accomplished piece but I definitely preferred part two.

Well done! I would bring the guitar (1:20ish to 2:20ish) up a bit, its fine from there to the 3:30ish mark. Then its a bit quite again; this all to my ear, take it with a grain of salt! That "ping" at 5:17 (and the little one at 5:28) is the only "flaw" I heard in the whole piece. Those drive me nuts, an otherwise flawless performance and "ding". Y'all should be proud! T

The pic on your Soundcloud page reminds me of the finale between Arthur and Mordred in John Boorman's film Excalibur. The song bears that out: an epic tale. Terrific guitar leads in Part I. The shift in Part II recalls Rossini: the post battle morning in The William Tell Overture. Great songwriting, great storytelling.
