'The Headless Cross' (featuring Tim Wilkinson)
Hi all, Here's a new version of 'The Headless Cross' from my Weirdstone project. Tim came to stay in January and we managed to get 2 songs recorded, here's the first; https://app.box.com/s/yr8vkmxxl9ct3s7p7cag (or via the player on my website - see link in sig) Tim wrote the lyrics, sang and played acoustic guitar, I did the rest.

Box is streaming fine here John. The player is at the bottom of the homepage on my site, just click through the tracks, it's the 5th track (after 'Shuttlingslow')

Love it. All of it. There is something "big" or "grand" about the sound of it yet the instrumentation is sparse and tasteful. You make us wait for the vocal and then you deliver. I can see this as an accompaniment to Excalibur or something along those lines. Well done.

Hi James, I remember an earlier version wich I liked very much. This one is more epic, for me a little bit too epic. Acoustic guitar sounds very direct, I'm missing a sense of space. Just my tuppence ; ) Very nice tune, well done. Rik

Finally got a chance to listen interesting I found the accoustic a little forward but other than that it was good. Regards your box link for me I am getting this problem, with both IE and Chrome. There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

Don't know how I missed this one. Oh :-) It's only a day old so I don't feel too bad. That guitar sounds beautiful, can you please find out the particulars? The guitar (type) how it was recorded and how it is treated? It's a beautiful Celtic tune, and Tim is one of my favorite singers. "I'd have the legends know, I held the line..." Beautiful writing..

Thank Rik. It's nice that you remember the earlier version. That had some problems in as much as the vocals and guitar were recorded on the same track, and not to a click, so I had a lot of trouble adding instruments to it, and also getting the mix to sound cohesive.

Thanks Robby, hoped/thought you might like this one. Tim's guitar, a Dave King handmade dreadnought, was recorded DI from the K&K pickup into my Boss BR-8 (set to the tuner channel, so no colouration), and into Sonar via the M-Audio 24/96, then I just added a little Sonitus reverb. I like that lyric too, gives me the shivers.

this is sweet. i like that it does not feel rushed, but does not feel slow either.... the solo guitar sounds a bit direct.... like a piezo..... would love to hear it blended with a mic as well...... the tone is really sweet tho. nice vocal performance. the reverb is tasteful. sound like you have a plosive and compression issue at 2:39 on 'i'd HAVE......." and again at 2:44 if you were singing into a compressor, it's there.. but if it's on mixdown (or mastering) you can fix that.
really nice tune.

Thanks Gonzo! Yep, the guitar is DI-d from a K&K pickup. The only mic at my disposal is a cheap condenser, and it doesn't do any guitar justice. I'll check out that plosive/compression issue, thanks again.
