Willowman (Tim Wilkinson)

Well I met a man out walkin, on the highway hill turnpike
Dressed in rags n sacks n twigs, I never seen the like
He seemed part of the hedgerow, somehow come to life.

Tuppence for a glass o beer, tuppence for some bread
You must stand me this small sum kind sir
to take you to your rest kind sir, he said
For some call me the Greenman, some call me Bold Jack
But to you I am the Willowman, now there's no turnin back
I'll be tappin on your window at the dyin of the light
You can give your soul to god but it's your ghost I'll take tonight
Down unto the river

Down unto the river through the wailin’ house I ran
Down unto the river in the arms of the Willowman
Down unto the river through the howlin’ hills I ran
Down unto the river run the tears of the Willowman

Well what of my poor children, I said what of my dear wife
What is to become of them if I depart this life
Is there nothin I can say to you to make you stay your hand?
Give me just another year upon this green and pleasant land
Don't take me down unto the river

Down unto the river through the wailin’ house I ran
Down unto the river in the arms of the Willowman
Down unto the river through the howlin’ hills I ran
Down unto the river run the tears of the Willowman

Well some call me the Greenman, some call me Bold Jack
But to you I am the Willowman, now there's no turnin back
I'll be tappin on your window at the dyin of the light
You can give your soul to god but it's your ghost I'll take tonight
Down unto the river

Down unto the river through the wailin’ house I ran
Down unto the river in the arms of the Willowman
Down unto the river through the howlin’ hills I ran
Down unto the river run the tears of the Willowman

    James,

Great production.   I see you are still working with Peter Gabriel;)  He really sounds like him IMHO...  You could push the LVOX up a hair but overall superbly produced.   I really like the introduction of the guitar around 2:10, that is a nice texture.   Was almost expecting an In The Air Tonight moment with drums kicking in at the end...the guitar tease built that anticipation I guess...   Really awesome production.

Vox level is fine here, but when the singing starts, just bring your banjax down a hair. Did you pan your main vocal slightly to the right? You might keep it dead center and pan the banjax.

Like the electric guitar when it comes in!!!

For me also, some snappy percussion should really be brought in as well. That would kill. And a bass lick, the standard A -E - A -E just dropping a fourth. G -D-G-D.     It would drive it.

Your vocals are very evocative - really nice job on this!

Great songwriting and the lyrics are very impressive and poetic.

The only crit like the rest was that arpeggioed guitar throughout masked the vocal a bit, too zingy, bring up the leadvox a hair or send or deaden that riff a little.

3:37 possibly could of had drums to the end

    That's the answer I think.

Did you pan your main vocal slightly to the right? You might keep it dead center and pan the banjax.

No, vocal is dead centre, banjax is 27% left.

Maybe, but that would be a different song. Trying to keep this as near as we can to the two of us playing the song, no 'pretend band'.

Your vocals are very evocative - really nice job on this!

    Another tune already?
as ever a potentially great song. personally not overly-enamored with the banjo sound, would prefer straight acoustic. Tim doing what Tim does, great vocals.
It's time and distance and memories and experience, but for me something of the vibe of Acrobat's is a little missing...percussion was always one of your strong points and this is missing it...also a little change-up in the chords to relative minor would work well...to me sounds like a demo and not a finished tune. and you know i don't criticise your stuff lightly James...

Thanks for the candid crit Mark, I know we're doing things a little differently than before, but it's a conscious decision.

Wow James, freaking fabulous!!  Vocals are perfect, lyrics haunting, superb production.  11 out of 10.  Jaw dropper.

    Thanks very much Walt!
