I've seen it where they use stem cells to print heart valves with something similar to this. I saw it on Nova iirc? I can't find any video but here's an article.

that is pretty interesting... I'm wondering the cost of the printer, and then the cost of each "print".

When you use it for RnD the cost is much cheaper than having something machined one off. We have a few similar units installed at the University and some of the high tech fab houses here. Whenever I get to visit I always take a few extra moments to sit and stare. Hey Bub, is there a possible career becoming a 3D print tech specialist? These things are starting to get momentum in the market. I believe there is a DIY kit available that the DIY CNC guys are using. It's astonishingly cheap. I imagine the "print supplies" are exorbitant... but for small business with existing needs it is going to end up being almost as common as any other industrial machining tool. Anyways, sometimes I wish I lived somewhere where more of this stuff was happening. But, then I look out my window. :-) best regards, mike

I've used these a few times, our company is about to spring for a very high end one soon. It's capable of mixed digital media that can produce hard plastic and highly elasticized plastic that acts like soft rubber in the same print profile. The smaller desk top versions that are a sort of ABS plastic are getting incredibly cheaper by the month. They can be had for as little as 10 k to 15 k. The high end one we're sourcing is in the 250 k region. About a grand for a couple of 3 pounds of media. I think it's a UV cure polymer.

mike_mccue Hey Bub, is there a possible career becoming a 3D print tech specialist? These things are starting to get momentum in the market. Not around here that I'm aware of. It's all small businesses and insurance giants (EMC, Prudential, BlueCross etc.) and they don't have a need for that kind of thing. I could see them putting one in at the two big universities here though. Especially Iowa State, it's an Engineering College. It would be fun to work on one of those.
