3rd party arpeggiator - how to set up in Sonar?
Hi, Can someone please give a step-by-step guide on how to make a 3rd party argeggiator work in Sonar? (Blue Arp, Kirnu, Cthulhu etc). I can't figure the midi routing out. Thanks in advance

- Insert you Synth instrument - choose instrument and audio output. (you should now have a MIDI track and Audio track)
- Insert the Arp instrument - again choose instrument and audio output.
- You should now have 2 MIDI tracks and 2 Audio tracks.
- On the Synth Panel (Inspector Pane) select Output MIDI for the Arp Instrument.
- Go back to the Track Pane - select the MIDI input of the Synth Instrument to take MIDI from the Arp.
- For starters select Apr - OMNI (later you may want to configure specific MIDI channels)
- Ensure that MIDI Echo is on for the Synth Instrument
- Place your MIDI notes on the Arp Track on the Track Pane.
- Hit PLAY and enjoy
hope this helps... cheers!!!

I only have Kirnu and Blue Arp. Blue Arp is better. I think Cthulhu is probably the best arp you can buy. The other 2 are free.

Thanks Keysz. I must be doing something wrong because I still am having difficuties. I understand that the arpeggiator midi output drives the synth you want to arpeggiate. Arp MIDI out => Synth MIDI In. Synth MIDI In <= Arp Out.

This may work for you: - Insert Blue Arp as a Simple Instrument Track, this is one of the few cases where instrument tracks make sense to me.
- Insert the synth of your choice into the project , make sure this synth makes sound
- Set the input on the (instrument or MIDI) synth track to "Blue Arp Omni"
- Add MIDI notes the Blue Arp track
- Play project

I just realized you are running X2. When inserting Blue Arp make sure to check "Enable MIDI Output" in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog or after inserting the arp right-click on it in the synth rack and select "Enable MIDI Output". There are some pretty bad bugs with "Enable MIDI Output" in versions prior to X3. Do not use more than one plug-in with "Enable MIDI Output" enabled at a time.

+1 for scook ... the MIDI routing below X3 is terrible. oh well they do work, however, the bugs to look out for are automatically changing of MIDI channels, routings & playback becoming intermittent, timing being off, overlapping notes and ultimately a crash. When you restart Sonar, all seems to be well again until stuff builds up... The trick is to disable or turn off the Arp from the Synth Panel when playing back the actual MIDI arp-ed notes on your desired synth - not just mute the track but turn it off fully. And of course most importantly save more frequently than ever. good luck all... Cheers!!!

I also briefly played with Blue Arp over the Easter Weekend and found it to be very useful/easy to work with (really good for free). However, I did have some problems routing Catanya_2 even after configuring it as a synth/Enabling Midi Output. I was impressed with the video demo of what Catanya 2 can do and bought it, but now have to go back to troubleshooting the routing issue. This thread will hopefully be useful tonight......

Hi Mesh, i am using that method above for Catanya 1. i did not get the current version, Catanya 2.
the only problem i have with Catanya is that it cannot be used in X3e x64. i have had it since X1. I have tried even with jBridge but it still doesnt work.
The work-around i am doing is to use it inside the x32 version of Sonar. After the MIDI notes are generated, i port them back to the x64 version where all my main instruments are. hope this help... Cheers!!!

Hi Keys, Thanks for the tip, but Catanya 2 (C2) is 64 bit and it should work well in X3e (without jumping through additional loops)......at least that's what other C2/X3 users have said. Mine is more of a routing issue (probably something small which I'm overlooking) in which a fellow C2/X3 user (Cryophonik) has kindly offered to help me sort this out. Check out the newer 64 bit version (some 1200 presets) and the upgrade price doesn't seem too bad.

For anyone who needs help with MIDI routing for a VST arpeggiator, The Catanya website has a great explanation with pics on how to do it. Thanks to everyone who helped me to demystify this process.

I can't figure out how to get any of them to play "live" in Sonar. The synth track has to be highlighted for them to produce any sound, so the arpeggiator track (BlueARP, Kirnu Cream, etc.) cannot be highlighted and cannot accept MIDI input from my keyboard. I have no problems making BlueARP work live in FL Producer, but the way the routing works is different than Sonar. Is it possible in Sonar?

Guess I don't have enough posts yet to link to other posts on this forum. Seems kinda dumb. Anyway, it should be possible. I found this info by TheMaartian for setting up Cthulhu to be helpful. http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3456409
