In the market for a new computer.  Would like advice on whether to spend $ on 4 core 3.2 GHZ or 6 core 3 GHZ?

Hey Randy, You might want to post in the Hardware or Computer forum,,, This place has become a ghost town!  Most of us left here are running P4's ha ha....  Any how that's a question for the super geeks for sure.
Good luck, I don;t envy you, I'm not looking forward to the day I finally have some extra cash for a computer. I know I'll buy the wrong one, it's a given. Seems there are some real good deals but then the ones I want are still $$$$$.
Standard today is i7, 8 Gigs RAM, 3.? quad core and enough HD capacity to store all known information in the universe. Don't forget USB 3... it will matter and soon.

Hiya, Johnny - Thanks for the reply.  Yes, this should be in a different forum - I was too lazy to figure out where to go, since this is the only forum I visit these days.  I'll go look around and re-post.  Thanks.

randy - I assume you still use primarily softsynths and MIDI and not much audio?  which softsynths are you using now?  still using GPO or something else?

that would be the deciding factor, IMO, as to how the softsynths would handle the cores.  sonar will work fine with either 4 or 6 cores and you really won't see a big differece with sonar for either one with only 200MHz difference in CPU clock speed.

but if the softsynths you use do better with more cores then I'd go with the 6 core.  if they do better with faster CPU speed than they do with more cores, then I'd go with the 4 core 3.2GHz.

I think the best bargain now is the Core i7 2600K Sandy Bridge or the Core i5 2500k if you want to save $100.  That should be plenty of power for running quite a few VSTi's.

Always go with more cores over higher clock speed, assuming you're running software that knows what to do with multiple cores, which SONAR does.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks for that, David - This is exactly what my computer guy said today.  He said that's the word from Intel, more cores over higher clock speed, and he's had the truth of it born out in his day-to-day working with computers.  He's a techno wizard kind of guy, way beyond what I'll ever know.

And good to see you, Jim!--thanks for your input, and Beagle, your great to be helping out too.
