ORIGINAL: lazarous I hear you about the scheduling portion, Carlos. I'm in the same boat, and have enough projects going on that getting a Saturday or Sunday to just play will be tough. Sure would be fun though! Informative as well. OK. Looks like I spoke too soon. We will very likely be Uptown next Saturday morning! PM or email if you would like to make plans.

Are you talking about the Los Culeros song "Greta" from my site? Is that thing still up? Wow. Little story about that tune: No one in the band was over 17. I hand-edited all of the Trombone parts so they'd be in time... and here's the kicker: The entire mix was done in Sonar 1. It was a fun project. Corey

FYI to anyone who cares: PSSL has a limited quantity of these things left. Might not be a bad idea to jump now if you're considering it at all. I like them enough I bought another pair. Get them while you can I guess. Glad I got a couple. "About MCA MCA 1910 E. They are cheap CHINESE mics...BUT...without that "ICE PICK IN YOUR EAR" high end peak boost most Chinese mics have, I picked up one of these SP1 mics. Don't like it much. It's worth exactly the $40 I paid for it. And I would say that it does have that Chinese mic ice pick sound. I did get about $20 worth of amusement from the clamshell packaging--I thought it was hilarious. So that should count for something. Overall, the mic is thin sounding and harsh. No low end. But is there anything better at the $40 price point? I doubt it.

Either that or they have changed the way they make them. I'm one who really doesn't like bright mics. I don't even like the Studio Projects C1 or the Rode NTK for that same reason. I think they would have been great for analog tape recording but not for digital. The MCA SP1 I used had none of that fake high end. It was clear and almost warm sounding. I think the preamp was a Mackie 800R best I remember.

ORIGINAL: ohhey You must have a bad one... I agree. That, or maybe it's a bad combination with your particular preamp... or maybe your preamp may be loading it funny, or maybe a phantom power incompatibility? My SP1 is tame and smooth on the high end. ORIGINAL: tarsier I did get about $20 worth of amusement from the clamshell packaging--I thought it was hilarious. So that should count for something. I got $20 worth of amusement out of that statement. You are absolutely right, tarsier, the packaging is a laugh riot. It's right out of Family Dollar Stores. Can you say "Mr. Microphone"? "Hey baby, we'll be back to pick you up later!" P.S. Take that ice-pick out of your ear, and maybe it'll sound better. (totally j/k )

Mics used were 2x AKG C414, 2x Neumann TLM 103, 2x Studio Projects B1, and 2x SP1s. Where did I use the SP1s?

The Sp-1 is quite smooth so i agree there must abe a discrepancy in the mic they used or the pre and the ones we used.

That, or maybe it's a bad combination with your particular preamp... or maybe your preamp may be loading it funny, or maybe a phantom power incompatibility? My SP1 is tame and smooth on the high end. I tried it in 3 preamps: Yamaha 02R, Brent Averil PQ 1061, Presonus Digimax. It sounded thin in all of them. And I don't think it's necessarily the mic since the sound of it pretty much correlates with its published frequency response: It starts rolling off at about 85 Hz and is -8 dB at 40 Hz. On the top end is the 10 - 15kHz peak at +5 dB. It's almost a textbook "thin sound" graph. I'd like to try another one to see if I actually did get a bad one. But I'm not curious enough to spend another $40 on it. A thought just hit me! I must have got the RIAA version of the mic. So I need to run it through an RIAA phono preamp to get the best sound out of it.

Does it matter?????????? Absolutely not. But that's the point, kinda - there's a $40 mic up against a $1000 mic, in a real life situation, and it's hard to tell which is which. I'll post the channel/mic assignment in a couple of days.

What a great way to start the day! I haven't heard a rhythm section that tight in quite a while. Great music, all of it. Ok, my guess- maybe the bass, but there's something the trumpet that makes me think that might be where the SP-1's are. Now, to wait for the results...

I vote for the trumpet for sure. The sax player needs to learn how to stay on the mic better. Who are the musicians? Do you have names, or at least a city? That's some serious playing by some serious players. Edit: the second SP-1 is on the bass?
