4GB of RAM in WINXP!?!?....
hey there gang--- i FINALLY upgraded my daw/x1/everything xp machine from 1 GB of RAM to 4GB of RAM. of course ive seen debates on whether XP (sp3) will even recognize it (dont care!) hoping that certainly this would increase overall performance while multitasking. my question is this: what should i do with the swap file? set it to 0? or set it to 4gb? or other? its been awhile since ive been cruising for XP tweaks (obviously they worked for me for about 10+yrs so...) after tweaking to get about 23 processes running and reboot times in the 25 second range, ive been pretty happy. and this is the first upgrade ive had to do--- knock on wood-- because i havent had any issues. thoughts? any awesome DAW TWEAK websites i need to see? thanks gang! --shane

First you'll need to enable the XP 3gig switch in your boot.ini file. Do a search on how to fix that. The most XP will see is a little over 3 gig. I've run machines under XP with the swap file turned-off and had mixed results. It may depend on your system.

There does seem to be some debate over the swap file size, however, most of what I read suggested using the normal guidelines for a swap file...1 1/2 times ram. As stated earlier, there is a 3gig setting in the boot.ini that needs to be set.

soundsubs You might want to take a look at this article. It seems there is a way to benefit from large amounts of ram even in a 32 bit system. EJ

I'd advise against having no swapfile at all. That's a recipe for a system crash at the worst possible moment: in the middle of a recording. Instead, just create one that's so big it will never need resizing. Go ahead and give it 100MB -- you can spare it, that's only 0.1GB. If you have two physical disk drives you can split it between them.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

bitflipper mentioned a swap file set so that it doesn't resize on the fly. I avoid dynamic resizing by setting the Initial and Maximum sizes the same and at least 1.5 times the physical memory size. Then the swap file is fully allocated (when you set the sizes) and stays that way. I try to remember to do that when the disk with the swap file is new so that the swap file is not fragmented. I think there are ways to defrag the swap file but I've never done it. --Larry

so those of you that have 4GB and up of RAM, what do you set your swap file to? the recommendation is really 1.5x RAM or 6GB?

bentedgz soundsubs You might want to take a look at this article. It seems there is a way to benefit from large amounts of ram even in a 32 bit system. EJ I would not use any program to create disks on unused ram. I tried it and my puter would not start for days until I unplugged it, took out the battery and let it sit for a few hours. It started after that but once it went to the os, it shut down. I repeated the process and had to reformat the windows drive and start over. Some may say, "it works for me". Lucky them. Let's face it, ram was not meant to be used like that.
