50 ways to leave your lover ... Who agrees with me? thoughts on drum mixing

This song has the PERFECT drum mix and sound ever. This is the standard  we should all strive to achieve in our drum mixes sonically?

And it was recorded in the 70s and on tape

Sonically this drum mix on this song makes my loins tingle.

My 2 cents on drum mixing

    it's all about steve gadd....
    and the arrangement.

    the method of recording it.....

i'd have to say the 'recording' of steely dan's "Aja", which also has steve gadd, would trump this one handily.
i'm a big paul simon fan, and steely dan fan, but an even BIGGER steve gadd fan.

    my point:

you are listening to a fantastic drummer........ could have been recorded anytime, anywhere, in any decent studio, and it would have sounded pretty much the same.

More mixing than recording...and I agree with my ol pal batsbrew...ol Steve is two hecks of a great drummer with a readily identifiable style.  His recent work with James Taylore is tres fab as well.

Well ya .... It is a good song and he is a good drummer .... But ....

Someone find me a bad song with the same drum tones and mix sonically then ... LOL

    Hard to do I suppose

I still think its recorded really well

I'll take Bonham from Led Zep II on, Alex.

Now that's a recorded drum sound.

i love bonhams sound on that album.

but i wouldn't put it in the 'pristine recordings' category for sure.

sounds like he's beating the sh!t out of his drums in a big hallway!!
    LOL

over the years i've found that a lot of my favorite recorded drum sounds are from more obscure jazz-rock and/or fusion bands....

it's a studio-mentality approach to certain drum sounds.

    i dig it.

but i also really like trashy drum sounds, when played by amazing musicians (charlie watts, ringo, moon, etc)

    Ok...

You have to quit comparing yourself to Phil Romone (texts me that all the time!)

Just becuase you don't think 50 ways was recorded as good as the drums on Zep II witch is a completely different style ...

I think your comparing styles here ....not drum recording technique

Also... As stated before ...quit texting me that you're next Phil Romone ......

gadd on his sig part of "50 ways"

    http://youtu.be/sZZLLYEzKE8

thing about the actual studio recording, the music is so sparse, it's easy to hear the drums.

what's hard, is to get amazing drum sounds to come across in a really dense mix....

Then get back to the subject of quality recorded drums

What I like about the OP is that he seems to state there is only one way to mix drums.

    Brilliant.

    Single source production.

All future drum mixes should be done by Phil Ramone and NO ONE ELSE.

Or, at least we should all strive to achieve "Phil Ramone" <---- Straummy, see what I did there I made his name a noun adjective not a name.

I still loves you like a brother from another mother Moochie my pal.
