If you're going to update to Vista, I would highly recommend backing up and doing a clean install. This way you will know that your problems won't perpetuate. Peace, Joshua

FretWiz - No I haven't. I don't think I've ever installed it in the 1st place and wouldn't a reinstall claim it's never been installed? I tried that with VisualC++ (I read that one of my problems was fixed in FixPack1) and, since I had never installed it in the 1st place, the reinstall told me so and refused to continue. I think what I'm going to try is a Windows Repair before I take the final plunge. I did a Repair when I installed a new motherboard. It worked like a charm and actually left my apps intact. If that doesn't work I think I will have to do a clean install. Luckily (?) I created a separate partition just for the OS so wiping it clean won't wipe out all my apps - they just won't work anymore. =:-D thorne

Noel - I neglected to thank you for forwarding my problem to Microsoft. And don't think your comment about "not everyone works weekends" is wasted on me. Thanks so much for your help. You guys provide great support. thorne PS - Regarding the install failure on CW15Auto.dll... Right now, when I reinstall SONAR, that's the only problem I have. When I use Dependecy Walker (DW) on that file, DW says there are 4 files CW15Auto calls that cannot be found: MFC80U.DLL, MSVCP80.DLL, MSVCR80.DLL and MSJAVA.DLL. Is there somewhere I can place copies of those files so the SONAR install will find them? thanks.

At least some of the files you're looking for are from the .NET framework which you can download from here. It might be worth a try. Otherwise, as previously suggested a complete rebuild seems in order. Brian

Brian - Thanks. I tried that and I get: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: Error creating process <D:\Documents and Settings\thorne\Local Settings\Temp\IXP000.TMP\Install.exe>. Reason: D:\WINDOWS\system32\advpack.dll So I tried downloading a copy of advpack.dll, but it seems the file cannot be overlayed nor deleted. Something keeps regenerating it when I rename it. I feel pretty screwed. =:-) thorne

thorne, You know what, I think you are :(. Time to start from scratch or get a pro to look at your PC I think. There's definitely something seriously wrong with your OS right now and fishing for missing files (based on my experience) is probably not going to help. advpack is a core dll used to verify .inf files; if that's not working, I'm surprised anything is. Sorry for the bad news. Brian

Phoenix - What I'm going to try next is an XP "Restore". If that doesn't work, then I'm going with a clean install of XP. I've now played with Vista. I think it stinks and that Bill Gates should be tar and feathered for going against the grain of "user interface standards" and a slew of other errors and popups that seem to plague his new beast. But I digress. =:-) thorne UPDATE - Restore failed - Windows doesn't recognize its own boot partition and is forcing me to format the partition. ARGH !!! So now I have to decide... Update with Vista and pray Vista fixes the problems (and then I don't have to reinstall all my apps - and I have hundreds), or do a clean reinstall of XP. Boy, this is a tough one.

Dude, I'm sorry to hear things have gone south so badly. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if Windows is forcing you to format the partition, you won't be able to simple "upgrade" to Vista. If you can slave your drive in another system and back it up, I would definitely do that and then run a clean install. Otherwise you'll be chasing ghosts for days. Speaking of ghosts, picking up a good disk imaging program that is Vista ready would be well worth your money. Peace,

And now to the rescue :D Hi Thorne, i finally fixed the problem and im hoping my solution can help you too.... I had the exactly same problem as you so i uninstalled sonar 6 completely and tried a reinstall and in the end of the sonar 6 install the installation would complain about "CW15Auto.dll". I then dug out my old system drive which i recently ghosted and replaced "CW15Auto.dll" in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities" with the one from my old system drive and voila the installation finished smoothly :D After that i installed 6.2 and finally 6.2.1 without problems and im up running again.... If you dont have a copy of "CW15Auto.dll" you could try removing it to the desktop to see if the installer replaces it or you can pm me and ill be happy to send you a copy of my working one.... Last solution is a long shot i think but its worth a try over reinstalling windows.... Crossing my fingers for you

Same problem as Thorne's, word for word. In my case, lifelong tertiary paranoia came in handy, as I always knew it would, by making me save multiple backup images of every partition on my machine. Sonar was the only application affected and I was able to re-install from v6.00 onward from my restored image. I believe I caused the problem by trying to gather as much of the SONAR installation under one roof; why does SONAR have to put Sample Content into My Documents as well as into Documents and Settings, for instance, or Templates and Drum Maps into D & S,again, when everything is duplicated in the main SONAR folder? the program shows every sign of turning to bloat like late period Elvis, in my view, and the people at Cakewalk could employ their time more usefully by providing SONAR with decent MIDI editing tools instead of plotting my downfall. I can feel a relapse coming on.

nomis - thanks. I already reinstalled Windows (and my 1 million apps). I just finished reinstalling SONAR and BOOM... same problem as you describe with CW15Auto.dll. I'll try your suggestion. I'm pretty close to opening an issue with Cakewalk. thorne PS - Yes, please send me your good CW15Auto.dll: thornev at optonline dot net

I'm experiencing the same problem that Thorne had. I've been able to reinstall 6.0 and 6.2 but no luck with 6.2.1 even after renaming the dll file. Any new suggestions? Scott
