Pffftttt!!
I think the music business has changed more in the past 5 years.
In the past year I have read a lot of articles some by professional international artists management and consultants. Overall it's been a mix of good and bad news. The good news is; Independent labels will thrive whereas;
Major labels are downsizing their rosters and focusing on their so called; 'Radio Ready'. Which means, for almost all bands their chances of getting a deal is much less favorable and recently well known bands have left the majors to form their own independent label.
Attitudes and strategies for unknown artists has shifted, all those music sites such as SC, RN, MySp and such are all moot, their charts have no integrity and for other reasons for example; most fans are musicians who fan musicians lol. Whereas 'real' fans are friends of friends. So, these music sites are more like social sites for musicians run by musicians.
What artists need to do is;
Get your own site and apps such as; Blog, Newsletter, Media Apps. For example; Wordpress and Bandpage (app) is a good start.
Next: Forget about trying to sell thousands of CD's. Sorry, talent and having great songs is not quite enough (though a good start) because let's face it, the music scene is way overly saturated.,,
What you need to change your directives for example; artists can make more money on video streams and believe it or not YouTube is the #1 choice for discovering new music. AND...
A lot of top online music mags will post your video on their site, all directly taken from YouTube. My own very static boring vid got picked up, for example; on sites such as;
NME If you get your music video distributed professionally for example; some distributors include really good packages + marketing which means you will most likely earn more money by video streams (clicks). So yes, forget about trying to sell thousands of CD's.
Also take the following into consideration; according to research in England and in the US, CD sales are down BUT downloads and streaming are doing exceptionally well.
Anyway, I could add more to this discussion along with further details, links and explanations (at least 500 pages worth ol) but my wife requires my attention. Sorry, got to go.
