    Didn't Zeppelin win some kind of award from the British government in the 70's for their contribution to the economy? I seem to recall seeing an old photo of Robert Plant shaking hands with a politician.

    No mention of the Beatles?

    That's exactly what I thought too, Herb. Moby over the Beatles? Then again, if you read this in full http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.05/moby_pr.html it gives you a way better understanding as to why they'd include him. I still think the Beatles should have been included. To me, they were as important as black americans were to influence and create rock music.

    No Van Halen? I only mention VH due to Disco ruling the roost until VH and The Cars saved us from that for a little while at least. Not to mention I think EVH is definitely one of the most (if not the most) influential rock guitarists of our time. It also brought distorted guitar into mainstream music. I mean, ok, we always had driven guitars, but not quite like this. From there, driven, processed guitar tones started showing up in pop and even dance as well as what was left of the disco stuff. MJ bringing in EVH for the Beat It solo along with Steve Lukather playing rhythm in 82/83....well, that says it all. LOL! :)

    I do agree with the others mentioned other than Journey...who I absolutely love. I don't think they did anything other than put out great tunes. Nothing I'd call innovative or mind-blowing as far as change though. Quite impressive that they paid for everything behind the scenes. That's actually a smart move. The less you owe your label, the faster you see royalties. No sense taking a huge advance as you don't make a dime until the advance is fully recouped...which is sometimes...never recouped and carried over to the next album.

    Pffftttt!!

    I think the music business has changed more in the past 5 years.

    In the past year I have read a lot of articles some by professional international artists management and consultants. Overall it's been a mix of good and bad news. The good news is; Independent labels will thrive whereas;

    Major labels are downsizing their rosters and focusing on their so called; 'Radio Ready'. Which means, for almost all bands their chances of getting a deal is much less favorable and recently well known bands have left the majors to form their own independent label.

    Attitudes and strategies for unknown artists has shifted, all those music sites such as SC, RN, MySp and such are all moot, their charts have no integrity and for other reasons for example; most fans are musicians who fan musicians lol. Whereas 'real' fans are friends of friends. So, these music sites are more like social sites for musicians run by musicians.

    What artists need to do is;

    Get your own site and apps such as; Blog, Newsletter, Media Apps. For example; Wordpress and Bandpage (app) is a good start.

    Next: Forget about trying to sell thousands of CD's. Sorry, talent and having great songs is not quite enough (though a good start) because let's face it, the music scene is way overly saturated.,,

    What you need to change your directives for example; artists can make more money on video streams and believe it or not YouTube is the #1 choice for discovering new music. AND...

    A lot of top online music mags will post your video on their site, all directly taken from YouTube. My own very static boring vid got picked up, for example; on sites such as; NME

    If you get your music video distributed professionally for example; some distributors include really good packages + marketing which means you will most likely earn more money by video streams (clicks). So yes, forget about trying to sell thousands of CD's.

    Also take the following into consideration; according to research in England and in the US, CD sales are down BUT downloads and streaming are doing exceptionally well.

    Anyway, I could add more to this discussion along with further details, links and explanations (at least 500 pages worth ol) but my wife requires my attention. Sorry, got to go.

    Well, the article seems to be focused on bands that changed the industry to make more money - and the Beatles were used as an example of one that didn't.

    If you're going to use a different focus, then Dylan (pulling out an electric guitar to a shower of boos and sticking with it) and, naturally, Hendrix along with several others which my brain is still too tired to think of.

    The Beatles were a real band - not just a bunch of musicians supporting a singer - wrote their own material and, though it wasn't as successful as they'd hoped, launched Apple corp...

    Essentially, they paved the way.

    In less than 10 years, they accomplished more than any other band I can think of.

    I mean, look at their catalog - that's more or less 8 years worth of material, and that was accomplished in between tours, movies, and all the rest.

    There's bands who've been at this for 30 years, haven't evolved a 10th by comparison and didn't write half as many memorable songs. W/ all the comfort of modern life, home studios, private jets, and a crew of dozens of people behind them...

    From a business standpoint I thought Dylan and Petty were trailblazers getting out of crappy contracts and then owning their creative property and making a butt load of money.
