8.5 32/64 bit not working together

I've searched for an answer but haven't found one yet. I have both 32 & 64 bit versions of 8.5 Studio on my Windows 7, 64 bit system. They're installed in the correct directories (64 = Program Files...  32 = Program Files(x86) ), and were working fine. Now, when I try to launch the 32 bit version, the splash screen comes up, waits about 6 or 8 seconds, then disappears, and the launch fails. The 64 bit version works fine.
 
I've reinstalled both the 32 and 64 bit versions, done the updates (to ver 8.5.3xx).
 
I should also say that I have X2 Producer installed, but I doubt seriously whether it's interfering with my 32 bit 8.5 version.
 
I've shut off all extraneous apps, including bluetooth, wireless, camera, etc, so the system is just running bare bones. I open Windows Task Manager and watch while I launch the 32 bit version. The .EXE file appears, then disappears when the launch fails.
 
I'm guessing there's some conflict in the registry somewhere, but I really have no idea.
 
Any ideas or places I should be looking for conflicts? Any other way to test why the it fails to launch?

    Further to this: I reinstalled 8.5 32 bit from the install disk. I then did the updates to 8.52 and 8.53. I was able to open the program after that and it worked fine. But then....
     
    I opened the 64 bit version of 8.5 and it worked okay. I closed it, then tried to open the 32 bit version again and got the same crash.... 6-8 seconds of the Sonar 8.5 splash screen, then it simply pops off and closes.
     
    Oh, and I should mention that I uninstalled 8.5 32 bit before I did the clean install. And I've tried launching it in safe mode. It gives me the msgbox about personalizing my settings, etc, but still crashes.
     
    any ideas?

    Go to the Task Manager and make sure an instance of sonarpdr.exe isn't already running. Kill it if it is.
     
    If it still fails, kill it again if necessary and restart but hold the SHIFT key down while it's starting.
     
    What may be happening is the initial instance of sonarpdr.exe, the 64-bit version, is hanging on exit. When you start up the 32-bit version it thinks it's already running and aborts. Just a theory.


    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    I seem to remember that unless you re start your computer you cannot switch between 32 and 64 bit versions of 8.5, That's why I still have Sonar 7 32 bit installed. I was using that to finish off some old stuff, But in the end I found 99% of my old 32 projects opened in 64 bit 8.5 with only a few easily replaced plugs tossing up a warning so have not returned to 32 bit for a couple of years now.
