8.5 Studio & Windows 7 (recording latency)

Windows XP and 8.5 Studio worked flawlessly, playback and recording went smooth with no dropouts or latency problems at all.  Then I switched to Windows 7 and to record I have to use ASIO drivers and turn off all plug-ins or else my sound quality is unmanageable and the CPU spikes are over the top.  To playback / mix I have to switch to WDM/KS drivers, and with all plug-ins operating CPU ranges from 20 to 40.  The latency is so bad trying to record with WDM/KS drivers that it's not an option.  I've turned off core parking, my network connection, downloaded all the latest drivers and patches etc. for all programs including my soundcard and NVIDIA.  I think ASIO may work with both recording and playback, but when I click on the ASIO Panel button nothing comes up, so I can't adjust the latency issue, and I've tried minimizing sonar to see if the panel came up behind it but it didn't.

Is there a better way??

Run the DPC latency checker before you go any further:

    http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

There are a lot of things in Windows 7 that weren't present in XP that can cause background issues.

I have the Audiophile 2496 and could not get the ASIO panel to com up in SONAR either. More of an M Audio issue I think. You can adjust it outside of the program in Windows Control Panel just make sure SONAR is closed.

I've already downloaded and run the latency check program and it found no problems.  I can't see anywhere to adjust it from the Windows control panel??

There should be a red icon in Control Panel for the M Audio device.

On all soundcards I had you can reach the settings either through Sonar, taskbar icons or by vendors own entry i menues.

It happends quite often that Sonar cannot bring it up though.

And on spikes, new machines quite often have Wireless LAN which often is a source for pops and clicks. Turn it off.

The ASIO thing is suspect. I run a Lynx L22 in ASIO mode, it works great in Win7 Pro. I'm assuming you have the latest drivers for the 1010LT.

Also, you have looked at Task Manager while Sonar is running, right? If you don't see a CPU hog in Task Manager, it's got to be something else.

FWIW, in my case it was a bad memory upgrade that hosed me up.  Everything worked fine with XP Pro. Win7 hated it.
