8.5 projects in X1, X1A, X1B are a crapshoot

Every time I open a pre-X1 project or even post-X1 project in X1, I close my eyes and grimace, because there is almost always something X1 complains about.  This has continued since X1B was released.  I am frankly just going to go back to 8.5.3 for the time being.  My frustration level is beyond help at this point.  I've had 2 crashes already in X1B and 3 separate instances where the project loaded and the audio engine wouldn't start, requiring a full reboot to get things working.  Here is just a sampling of the errors I've seen in X1B already:

Following Plugin failed to load c:\program files\cakewalk\shared utilities\internal \PCS-glossEQM.dll

or

Omnisphere failed to load

or Kontakt 4 failed to load  (twice)

If I start a new project and add these plugins, they load fine.  Just not in existing projects until I've loaded them into a project.  Maybe I should just scrap my 800+ legacy projects and do a clean start from scratch in X1.

When X1B was released I posted a thread about this compatibility issue.

There are issues for some of us in that regard -- sorry you got bit too.

In my testing of my VVocal and bounce to clip issues, I have discovered the same thing.  Problems with any project from older versions of sonar.

BUT... I had no problems with a project created in Cakewalk Pro Audio!

    Go figure!

Yep - this is exactly what I've found.

Projects created in 8.5.3 do NOT play at all well with X1.

Projects created totally inside X1b seem to be completely stable, though I've got a lot more testing to do before I'm convinced.

    Try this...
Copy/Paste the performance data from the original v8.53 project into a new/empty X1b project.
    Save the new Project.
Now... close and re-open the project in X1.
    Is behavior as expected?

You may have covered this already, but make sure X1b is scanning the same VST Plugins folder/s as v8.53.
If a particular folder/dll is missing from the scanned paths in v8.53, X1b won't be able to load that plugin/s.
If you're dealing with separate machines, make sure you've got the same version number for the plugins.
ie: If the older project references Kontakt 3.... and the new machine only has Kontakt 4, you're going to have a problem when loading the older project on the new system (where Kontakt 3 doesn't exist).  This type of issue isn't specific/unique to Sonar... you'd experience it across the board.  The solution is to open the old project, replace Kontakt 3 with Kontakt 4 and resave.  Or... you could install Kontakt 3.

This may be totally irrelevant, but I have found what appears to be a cure/work around for opening old 8.5.3 and before projects that then end in X1a or b to crash.

I have found if you open your project in safe mode.  i.e. select the project to open and then Hold down the shift key before pressing OK or Open.

I then selectively load each plugging as I go,  I only load what I recognise and I do not load SONITUS EQ.

Once the project has loaded I save it with a change in the name, I have been adding X1b in the title, then close and reopen the project.

This, as I say appears, to work.  Yes you have to go and recreate your EQ which if you have lots of tracks, it is tedious but it is better than the alternative. There ain't gonna be a SONAR 8.5.4 or SONAR 9.x.x.  Beside the Pro Channel EQ is much sweeter.

If this is irrelevant then please ignore.

I'm not sure what it does, but...
I have had good luck with opening up projects using the shift key.  Just say yes to load all plugins.  I think it might reset a few things as the file opens up.  Not really sure what it does.  Then save normally.

    Hope this helps,

Update since post.  I need to add:

    C++ Runtime error

Sonar Crash when running VST scan for failed / existing plugins.

Same deal here.  I got this on a brand new X1b project.  Multiple C++ Runtime errors.  Kontakt 4 failed to load.  Restarting both Sonar X1b and computer didn't resolve.  Reinstalled Kontakt 4 and plugin manager returned an error that it could not continue when scanning for VST's after this.  Also got crashes (but not every time) on loading Dimension Pro and Miroslav Philharmonik.  I was eventually able to load these to but can not get Kontakt working again.

One weird error, I tried to load Dimension Pro and it loaded but all the track information went blank in the track view.  Restarted Sonar and it came back.

I'm going to try reinstalling Sonar (up to X1b) and audio drivers.  Also troubleshooting C++ libraries as mentioned in another thread here.

I'll report back afterwards whether this succeeds or fails.

    Re:8.5 projects in X1, X1A, X1B are a crapshoot 2011/03/24 20:22:23 (permalink)
I think I am just going to give up at this point.  I might revisit X1 again someday, but my frustration level is through the roof.

In response to earlier posts, this is on the same machine as 8.5.3, and all plugins are still in place...Kontakt 2, 3, 4.

Once again, Sonar couldn't load the Kontakt 4 that is in the project (3 times).  I close down Sonar, add Kontakt 4 to a new track, close the project, re-open the 8.5.3 era project and Kontakt 4 is suddenly somewhat peachy....UNTIL

On 8.5-era projects, if I add an additional single instance of Kontakt 4 within X1.  I can play the sounds, but I can then never again run the transport in that project.  Yes, you read that right.  Until I remove that new instance, the transport will not let me click on PLAY.  The audio engine will not engage after the first attempt.   Remove the Kontakt instance, playback can happen.  Redo the insert of Kontakt 4, the problem returns.  This is freaking ridiculous and I am literally shouting at my computer.

All I needed to do was open am 8.5-era project, mute a piano track, and insert one part to replace it.  I guess I was just way too optimistic that I could do this in X1.

I know if your files converted to x1 whebn you first installed x1 they all should have the x1 logo on them. because i have open 8.53 files with x1a AND X1B

I have same problems with both! I've had crashes with both opening 8.5.3 projects and fresh one started with x1b within the first half hour of installing x1b! 8.5.3 and other daws on this pc work flawless....  (both projects were minimal with only a few tracks, the one that was started fresh in x1b was just 2 tracks, an audio and track w amplitube 3) after that i shut it off, was dissapointed...
i just don't get it! i had high hopes for x1,x1a and x1b.

Yes, same here.  These are not huge complex projects we're talking about.  They generally have fewer than 10 tracks, and a standard set of plugins, which I preloaded into my template.  These include: PianoTeq, Kore 2 with Battery 3 loaded, Trilian or Trilogy, Lounge Lizard 2 or 3, Plugsound .  Some older ones contain Kompakt.  I have a service ticket open, so it is useful to know that others are seeing this same thing with pre-X1 projects.  This is A bit like having a new 3D television that won't let you play any of your DVD's.   I've got a massive catalog of library tracks that I need to modify /customize on a regular basis and I can guarantee X1 is not going NEAR them until these issues are addressed.

I have tons of old projects that I load into X1 and have not had any problem except missing ports because I have changed hardware and missing plugins.

No project has not loaded or been a problem.  These go back to wrk files.
This is with all versions of Sonar. I do not load newer projects in older versions but I do the opposite all the time.

Perhaps try loading an old demo from an old version to see if you still have loading issues with it.
