8dot3 filenames in track templates

I have disabled 8dot3 filename creation on my drives and in many cases I removed the 8dot3 extra directory entries where there were no registry conflicts. (this was by using the fsutil 8dot3name management functions.)

It seems that this plays havoc with some of the Sonar pre-built track templates.

For example, if I chose a Dimension Pro template (Dpro House Stack) it is looking for a 'DIMENS~1' file. Synths that have short names (like Rapture) are not affected, but the ones with longer names and names with spaces are affected.

Sometimes I get a dialog that allows me to chose a replacement, sometimes this results in a crash with a display of a 'pure virtual function call' and no crash dump trap to report the problem.

I also can't run the "Usage Logger" from the Help menu to report these steps -  it won't start up. I never tried that before so maybe it's been broken for a while - anyone else have trouble with it?

    Hi arachnaut,

This is a known issue.  To my knowledge there is currently no solution other than enabling short filenames:

    http://www.cakewalk.com/S...reader.aspx/2007013293

We plan to address this in he future by changing SONAR's methods of referencing VSTs.

The method in that KB article is not foolproof.
The File copy/paste method does not seem to preserve symbolic links properly, it copies the files and folders, not the links.

Also, the desktop target might have 8dot3names disabled, as it does for me, so you have to find a temporary spot with short filenames enabled.

Basically, I have found that once you disable 8dot3names, and remove those old directory entries, you really can't go back. Or at least I don't know how to do it. Maybe ROBOCOPY can do it, but I didn't want to dig into that.

Weird how relics from the DOS days still haunt us.

Looking through ROBOCOPY - the /SL option will copy the symbolic links.

Weird how relics from the DOS days still haunt us.

Actually, I should have said FAT not DOS.

Note that Windows Server 8 has a new file system ReFS (Resilient File System, codenamed "Protogon") that does not support short names. It will probably migrate to the desk top soon.

As of X2A I took out the dependencies on short file names with VST's.
Perhaps the issue is with older projects saved using short file name generated ID's.
Can you confirm whether you see this on new projects or templates? (you shouldn't)

Here is an excerpt from the X2A notes regarding this:
    ---

Additional Installation Steps Regarding VST Plug-ins:

After installing the X2a update we recommend resetting and re-scanning your VST plugins. SONAR X2a has a new mechanism for handling file systems without short file name support. While this is not mandatory, re-scanning will allow SONAR to properly detect and handle this scenario where applicable.

This can be done by launching SONAR and doing the following:
Go to Edit > Preferences > File - VST Settings
Click the [Reset All VST Plug-ins] button
When prompted with the message "This will reset configuration settings for all your VST Plug-ins to defaults... Are you sure you want to do this" click [Yes]
Click the [Scan VST Folders] button and wait for the scan to complete

I don't see it with new projects that I make, just the standard installed synth track templates in the Sonar content library.

For example, inserting the first Dimension Pro track template (Dpro House Stack) I see this:

If you have a chance to do this - resave those templates in X2A on a machine that has 8.3 support enabled. Then load the resaved template on the system that has no 8.3 support. The new files should load OK since they will have the updated info stored.

But there are 313 files in the X2 template library and I have only this machine running Sonar.
Shouldn't the template fixes be part of an update to Sonar so that everyone doesn't have to do this?

I meant for you to try it with one template and see if it solves the issue for you.
