A BIG REMINDER-Windows 10 reset my audio controller!
Morning, guys! I noticed having to struggle with latency issues and projects that ran fine before I updated to Windows 10 were now struggling sporadically to play without an occasional glitch or pop! To my amazement when I checked in the Device Manager, it seems that Windows 10 had reset my internal card back on. These are the two biggies to check for blazing performance with your audio interface. Open Device Manager. Software Devices-Disable Microsoft GS Synth System Devices-Disable Hi-Def Audio Controller. That will take your internal card and it's drivers completely off the system. These 2 tweaks make all the difference for my computers. In earlier versions, before I found these tweaks, a lot of my projects were having trouble running at 256 and 512. After these 2 simple tweaks my latency will run as low as 90 in ASIO. If it doesn't help just re-enable them. A very simple fix! I don't know why Windows 10 would have reset these but I thought I would post a reminder to check those. Hope this helps someone.

I had more or less the same issue, i also had to download a new driver for my audio interface IMO, win 8.1 " performed better " Even if i did Disable onboard soundcard in BIOS, it would show up and be " Active " in win 10 Had to disable from windows also...

If your soundcard is within your motherboard disable it in your BIOS. If it's a card, strip it out. Are you sure HiDef audio controller isn't nvidia sound? If so you can simply remove the drivers by updating the drivers and doing a clean custom install. MS GS Synth is part of Windows. There is a very likely chance after installing Windows 10 you will need to reinstall or (preferably) update your drivers, even if they appear to work. Cheers..

Both cases, it is motherboard. I did have a MOTU 24io audio card in one but it wouldn't get along with the Studio-Captures drivers so I pulled it out and those issues disappeared! I just re-enabled back when I first tried these tweaks and everything worked fine. No re-install at all. Very strange, but I like it! I had a project that would not run below 256 samples in ASIO and with these tweaks the same project will run at 48 samples on a dual core! I don't know if it's Windows 10 voodoo or what but I have never had the performance I'm getting now! I am patiently waiting for the old dual core to explode as we speak. This is just too good! Scared to even see what the quad core does!

I've also had this happen with updates. After my Win 10 install I shut down everything but my UR44 and it was good for a while. I noticed, quite by accident, that windoze turned them all back on again after a couple of updates. It also reset the sound device to 100% output. Now I check it regularly.

I'm running the CoolSoft Virtual MIDI synth, so disabling the POS MS Synth makes perfect sense. I had the internal HD audio disabled as a Playback device, but disabling it via Device Manager did, in fact, remove it as a choice in the Playback and Recording device lists.

When testing Win10, I did notice it will turn things on or change the drivers. My wireless N card became a Wireless G in Win10, as well as some USB3.0 shenanigans. Win10 knows what you want and what you need ...trust them.

Sidroe... Thanks for this! I know it's probably been discussed ad nauseum before but I never had many problems except with huge projects and I'm still on win7... but I just ran latency mon pre and post your suggestion re: disable hi-def audio controller and latencies just plummeted! I was happy before but now imagine I'm really gonna be stoked! 20 minutes later... just banged up several huge Albion/Project Sam templates full on playing plus some heavy O2 Airwave multis which are quite harsh on the ol' cpu and playing fine at 2ms on my ole Forte which would always sputter at 2ms... thanks again!

Win10 drivers ultimately chucks on third party drivers that were deemed OK several months ago. Fact it most of them aren't and that time has passed, so first thing after upgrade is visit third party sites and get the latest which are bound to be more stable.

I am so glad to see that it isn't just an acid flashback concerning the goings on of Windows 10 and this reset. I have to say that before 10 I was pretty happy with my rigs but it seems to me that after these adjustments the rig is running like an Indy race car! I just checked some more projects that were very CPU intensive and could actually pull the latency back to almost half of what it was. Like I said, I hope nothing explodes or melts because SPLAT has never run this good.

I installed Windows 10 and gave it an honest evaluation. Right back to Win 7! I guess when everything stops working with Win 7 and users are forced onto 10 or whatever crap they come up with next I'll become a Mac user... And that will really irritate me!!

Bflat5... really? I've followed win10 a bit and microsoft is paying particular attention to a raft of "audio" issues; has active artists/musicians assigned to this area and recognizes the need to really embrace our sector (everyone else is leaving the platform for pads/chromebooks!)... while I haven't transitioned yet due to some system issues, (I tried) I don't get the hate... or the humor maybe???

Simply dis-abling the audio device is not enough to get the latency down. Dis-abling the HD controller takes the internal card and drivers off the system. The results are absolutely stunning as far as my experience. When you dis-able the controller it still stays on the list, just dis-abled. The drivers on the audio device list will disappear leaving no option but your interface on the list. The performance for me has been astounding! Craig Anderton turned us on to this fix back around Sonar 2 I believe. It was impressive in 3 but since jumping to windows 10, it is mind boggling how the whole computer seems to have awaken from a deep slumber. I won't say that it will work for everyone but it is simple enough to try and not have to muck around in the bios or registry.

If you upgrade a windows OS it will do stuff afterwards. Not always pleasant. Afterward you need to hunt around and see what has happened.
Generally best to do a clean install...then...

It is when done in the BIOS - the drivers don't even load as the device is not loaded at boot. Well at least, they shouldn't . I have always disabled on-board in the BIOS and had no issues ever...stretching back near 15 years!

I installed it on my laptop that is well within the requirements for it. It took it forever to boot and ran at a snails pace once it finally did boot. I'm sure it will run faster on my other machines that have I7's and 32 gigs of RAM and better graphic cards, but there's one other thing I've been hearing that I really don't like - If it's true - and that is Microsoft has changed it terms to state they reserve the right to download your personal files. Again, not sure if it's true or not, but since they are giving the OS away for free I'm sure they feel they have that right.

The reason I described the device manager tweaks are because a lot of us really are not comfortable when it comes to mucking around in the BIOS or the Registry. The device manager dis-ables are fairly simple and not near as intimidating to someone who is not a computer whiz. I have used the BIOS and tweaked registry settings but it always made me nervous because I just wasn't that familiar with the process.

Hi, doncolga! I have been to Statesboro many times. Send me a private message and we can swap info and maybe we can get together next time I'm around there. Or vice-versa.

I'm not a Sonar user, but with regards to Windows 10's apparent slow boot times and sluggishness, I have seen this mentioned around the net at different places numerous times and actually experienced it myself, and that is, after you upgrade, things can indeed seem, and be slower, booting shutting down and general performance, but for whatever reason after some time, reboots etc, it seems to find its feet, and then there is no holding it back, and performance wise and boot and shut down times become very noticeably faster than previous OS's, for me Windows 7 Pro. Seen this mentioned quite a bit, whatever the reason, for me there is no turning back to Windows 7, it would feel like someone has thrown out the anchor, or have their foot on the brakes :) Going to have a good read of this thread and then see if there is anything in this disabling the onboard sound, HD controller etc for me. Easy stuff to try, and if no dice easy to set it back.

My boot times are amazingly fast! The shutdowns as well. My only issue was as I said the internal audio controller was re-activated somehow during the 10 upgrade. I could never be more pleased SO FAR with 10! There has been a number of issues I had with 7 and 8.1 that 10 seems to have fixed as a matter of fact.
