A Big One

I know, I have way too much time on my hands some days. I found this guy dead. He had gotten in but could not get out and died. Although I have no claims to being any kind of a photographer I took my cell phone and took a few pics of him. Measures about 1.5 inches long or around 39mm for you metric people out there. Pretty darned big for a wasp. Not sure what kind it is but if it landed on my head I would take notice immediately.

Looks like it could really put a stingin' on ya. A real marvel of miniature engineering. If this thing was 12" long I probably wouldn't go outside anymore lol.Back when the oxygen content of our atmosphere was mich higher and we had more tropical weather they DID get much bigger. Even seen the pics of  ancient dragonflys over 12" ?No they are not photoshopped.

Anyways now back to the normally scheduled programming.

Sorry guys I have big moob pics but none THAT big. Back in ancient times when the oxygen content was higher they would have gotten much larger. OK now I'll be having big moob nightmares tonight...thanks a lot.

Those old Godzilla .vs the Moob movies are terrifying.

Even knowing there were some of those 1.5" long around here would keep me inside!  I can't stand flying, stinging insects - especially the kind that are fast and can sting multiple times.  I just had to deal with a nest yesterday, but at least they were small (0.5" or so).

Glad they didn't get you Craig. I have a hornets nest on my house right now. I went on the internet to find the best way to get rid of them and from what I gather you should do it at night and wear your running shoes. I'll report back on that one.

Our exterminator shows up today. True fact.

After he leaves, my moobs will still be here. Even truer fact.

But with the diet they will be teeny tiny.  I'm trying to be optimistic here.

We used to get quite a few dragonflies out the back of our place, probably attracted to the pond water, but for the last couple of years, all I've seen are really small ones - where have all the adults gone?

Starise, I prefer to see a wasp in that state.
In my line of work, I come into contact with way too many of them. As a cable tech, I am always working under eaves and opening outdoor enclosures, prime spots for the little buggers. And they are not friendly.
I carry a few cans of wasp spray as well as my MAPP torch for fire ants and black widow spiders.
As for getting rid of that nest, yes, they are relatively sluggish when it is cool. However, they have a nasty disposition, and don't like being messed with. The warmer it is, the faster you have to run.
If you have the option, attack at dawn, rather than evening. They haven't warmed up yet, and are far less responsive.
    Good luck.
