A Brotha singing a cover of Bon Jovi "Wanted Dead or Alive"

http://soundcloud.com/disrezoloution/wanted-dead-or-alive-cover

I am trying to get better and recording and mixing my music. Is it worth buying the new add ons for pro channel? I am just using vocal strip "rock vocal edge" and slap back reverb. Tell me what you think.

A Brutha wiff pipes! Loved it man!!! Lots of heart, soul and feeling. :) You know what I'd love to hear you cover next? Cult of Personality by Living Color! I love Cory Glover...I bet you could rip that song to pieces. :) Or...oooh..."Open letter to a Landlord". Another great tune.

Speaking of Brutha's wiff pipes...check out the dude that posted under your initial post, Twisted6s. Tony is insane man. You guys both rule...awesome job on this.  :)

It sounds great. At the end of the day if Tony and the Danziman are good with it, then you're golden ! Say no more.

Not trying to be at all controversial or confrontational here, but having seen this and your previous posts it seems that you feel the need  to let everyone know that you are black. I consider it a non-issue. Just wondered why you feel the need to point that out? Just curious, I don't mean to imply anything at all by asking the question.

I totally agree.  I have to admit that when I read the topic, I didn't know what to expect.  If it's good, it's good (and it was by the way).  Race needn't play a role in your musical identification.

Well you know Paulo, sometimes, (at least speaking for myself here and this is just my take as well as a theory) when a white guy does something that black guys usually do, I almost feel like it's just not right and I would probably say a little something too if it were me covering a rap or hip hop tune about myself. I think it's more of a respect thing than actually meaning anything to do with race. I mean think about it...a white guy rapping...if he doesn't do it justice, it can be taken as a shot at race or even the genre, know what I mean? I did a song with Philip on here where I rapped and purposely tried to sound a bit more brother-like and even turned on some Ebonics. I did my best to really make it authentic though showing that "hey, ok I'm a white guy but I did my homework and got it as close as I could" as it's something I really practiced hard on for many years. :)

Now put the shoes on the other feet. Imagine being a black guy doing rock. Even if you're good, you still hope that no one finds any of it offensive...especially some of the red-neck rockers that just find something to complain about, ya know? The racial stuff is dead for a lot of us (I see people never colors) but for some, well, it's very much alive and sometimes a person doing a genre of music that may be "color oriented" just may try to tread softly. I actually respect him for the way he put it out there. Kinda like "hey, I just love music and hope you dig a black guy singing rock" as an ice breaker, ya know? It also made me quite stoked to hear a black guy cover a rock tune and do it so well. This is all speculation of course...but whatever the case, I love the tune and respect the man as I'm sure we all do and could care less about color. Just my take though :)

Nice cover.   I'd say you probably sing it better than Bon Jovi.

The add-ons for PC are pretty decent, I find myself using less 3rd party plugs and a lot less tweaking to get a good result.   I like the new PC2A but actually still reach for the PC4k more often than not.   I'd say for the price you can't beat them.  I also find the PC Pre-sets are pretty good for a starting point.

Thank you for all the nice comments and support. I am not trying to start any trouble or offend anyone when I say a Brotha singing rock or any comments like that. I just pisses me off when I go somewhere to sing people right away think I am either going to get up and rap, dance, or be the bass player for someone else. I just want to rock and have a good time. Music doesn't see any color and I don't believe in what people call black music or white music. It is just music and it is made to enjoy. I wish that the country as a whole could come together and forget all this race crap. We are all Americans and love this land.

No offence taken and hopefully none caused. I was just curious, not just by what you put in your posts, but with the Soundcloud tags too.  Maybe I shouldn't have asked, but I've never seen anybody here feel the need to point out their colour before, so it just struck me as an odd thing to do. Now that I have seen your response I understand a little more, but also I agree with Jamesyoyo's comment - nothing better than being surprised  !

Anyway, keep up the good work - you sound great !

I thought you sang it well by the way. And I really wish people would get over color or just appreciate the benefits of it.

I also think you're holding back - not sure if that's because of pitch control or not. I really wanted to here you release into the tone. I felt like you were over articulating the tone in your throat, versus trying to shape it using your nasal passage or by using mask.

You've heard other people do this in the opposite direction where they have a very froggy or covered sound that's dark and inarticulate. Your's isn't that, but the tone isn't free either...but good work overall. You got a cool voice.

The technique is called mask. The easiest way to think about it is smiling into the sound.

When I listen to your vocal track, what I hear is a lot of breathy singing from in your mouth, especially in the higher parts. Compare the opening part of the song, to the power of 1:36 and following for the phrase.

In that part, you're using compression and singing from your throat, which is what you want, but for most of the rest of it, it sounds like you're contorting your voice in a way that's noticeable...at least to me it is. But - then again, that may be because I'm a vocal contortionist!

Does your throat ever hurt when you sing, or when your'e done?

and btw - your vibrato is like a damn oscilloscope, it's a perfect harmonic. Which is why I thought it was edited in...good work!

Great stuff! I really enjoyed hearing you sing this. I like it better than BJ's.

I saw the thing about people thinking your going to be the bass player. LOL! I played bass with a couple of guys in a blues band. I was the white guy! Fun times.

    Very well done!

id lay off the vibrato it weakens the voice, see strong vocalist learn to sing without vibrato to practice perfect pitch,im not saying vibrato is bad but too much of it does not do your voice any strenthening, also if you lay off the attack in the compression it will lose some of the breathing but more importantly is proper mic technics.use a vocal pop screen and set it around 7 inches away from the mic(also depending on what type of mic is used,i use one of the orignal rode nt mic(500.00 condenser mic)newer models are built cheaper for around 200-300.i leave good distance between the condensers, the dynamic mics i get a little closer to the singer.(or myself)
