A Handful of Issues I've Encountered in X2
Hi everybody! I've been using Sonar since version 3. I made the switch to X2 a few months ago, and since then I've been encountering the following issues without finding a fix:
+Some audio clips simply won't import into my tracks. I drag and drop from the browser, try the import option from the file menu, and everything else I can think of. There's nothing special about the files themselves- they're formatted identically to clips that import successfully. I've even tried renaming them. There's no error message, no sound, it simply "thinks" for half a second, and nothing changes. Restarting my computer/Sonar does nothing to fix it. Trying to import into different projects doesn't help.
+For some projects, when playback reaches the end of the project, and there's no audio playing, playback continues indefinitely. Most recently, trying to export a 5-minute long project resulted in a multi-GB file, over an hour in length, with 55 minutes of silence at the end. Not sure what to do about this, because it takes FOREVER to export the files. A serious problem.
+Sometimes, while I'm editing, the Now marker will be offset by a few measures from where playback is actually occurring and from where I'm clicking. Scrolling side-to-side on the screen usually helps, but sometimes I sit there for a few minutes trying to figure out what the heck is going on before I realize it.
+X2 seems to spontaneously change preferences on me, and I can't find where to reset them to my settings. For example, X2 used to return to where I started playback when I stopped playback. All of a sudden, one day it stopped doing that, which is pretty frustrating. I can't seem to find the option to change that preference ANYWHERE, despite the fact that in previous Sonar versions this was a simple tick-box in the Editing options dialog. + The Snap function seems buggy and sometimes I can't figure out what caused it to fail. I'll have it set to 1/4 notes, it'll be on, and moving clips will result in start times of 72:01:012 or something randomly off-the-mark like that. Extremely irritating.
+X2 won't play nicely with certain plugins. I've had to give up using some of my favorites because they either crash X2, won't automate, or using them in a project causes audio playback to stop spontaneously every few seconds (without a dropout message).
+Something weird is happening with my drivers. I've never had driver issues before, but now, using my Komplete Audio 6 interface, I have to open Sonar, go to preferences, and either enable or disable the option to "Share driver with other programs" before playback will work. Basically I have to *change* the setting to fix the issue- if it was disabled when I opened Sonar, enabling it fixes the issue, and vica-versa. I don't have this issue with my Delta 1010.
My PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate, and has an 8-core AMD processor, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD system and storage drives, and I use M-Audio Delta 1010 and Delta 44 PCI soundcards and the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 soundcards (I switch between them, to whatever functions properly).
Any ideas? :/
Thanks for your help, guys! :]

Tell us about the audio clips you're trying to import. If they are copyrighted using DRM (Digital Rights Management), Sonar may not import them. What format are they, i.e., WAV, MP3, etc.?

They are of varying formats, but mostly un-DRMed WAV files. Most recently, I encountered the issue with this file: http://www.freesound.org/people/sandyrb/sounds/110423/ ETA: I thought maybe it was somehow related to bit depth/sampling rate (though I know Sonar can use multiple of each in a project), but they match those of my project: 48/24.

That particular wav file is a Broadcast wave. It loads fine. But if you have Preferences > File > Audio Data "Always Import Broadcast Waves At Their Timestamp" the file is located down the timeline at 19:22:15. Uncheck the option and the wav will load wherever you want it.

One clue that might help with stuff like broadcast wave files way down the timeline is the dots in the track indicating data further to the right on the timeline. Mis-positioned audio, automation nodes and other events can be causing the "project never ends on playback" problem. Usually there is a visual indication albeit sometimes difficult to see or an entry in the event list. One way to guarantee the length of an exported track is to select a time range to export.

Is the Snap Module set to "Snap to" or "Snap by" (B in the illustration below from this page)?

I just downloaded that file and it does seem to not get imported to an audio track. I myself would map that sound in Kontakt to create a playable choir sound, but that's just me, although I would have thought it would still have played. I will look into it. Bob Bone

Ah yes, the clip did import about 2 hours into the track. That fixed that issue, as well as the indefinite export issue (at least for one project). Thanks, guys!!!!!!!!
Is there a way to set an Out point for export, for the other projects where this is an issue?
Scook, I have it set to Snap To.
Thanks for your replies, everybody! :]

I converted the wav file to an MP3, just to see what happened, and it then imported just fine, SO, something in how it is saved as a wav file IS interfering with Sonar's ability to import it, or it imported past where I was looking. Run it through conversion from wav to wav, and it should then import fine, although again I would wonder why you would want this short unison note, rather than map it to a playable preset in something like Kontakt. There is no end of song marker. Most times projects that go past where you think they should, there is some data way down the timeline. It can be an automation node, midi event or loop like the one you just experienced. If you want to assure the length of an export, in addition to selecting the tracks to export, select the time range. There are several ways to specify the time range. One way is drag across the timeline.

As far as plugins crashing x64, try installing 32-bit Sonar and working with those plugins there, as sometimes they do not load well into x64. (talking about some of the 32-bit plugs). Bob Bone

Could try jBridge as an alternative to BitBridge too.
