A Love/Hate Relationship...and Bapu

Bapu...gotta love him for his recent generosity, right? I mean, to send a gift of the flagship version of Sonar, the newest, bestest X1, across the country to some one he barely knows...how many ways can you say "Thank You"?

So, you carefully load it up, download and install the patches, and open a song that would not open with the programs you had before...(I have m/c pro, 3,4, and 5, plus sonar 8.5 LE and a couple "demo" versions)...and for the first time I get to see this new GUI, unlimited tracks and busses, and tricks and toys I could only read about...and, for the first time in three years...

Crash. No reason, no warning, just crash. Scratch head, grab another coffee, scratch something else, and re-fire X1.

No real problems, got auto save on so nothing lost, working for ten, maybe fifteen minutes...and...crash.

I am sure that it is something I did, and I refuse to go upstairs and cry and complain, after all, this is not my first rodeo, and the word "hate" does not really apply here, ( I am still indebted to you, Ed, and will do my best to return the favor some how ), and I am sure everyone here knew it was just a matter of time...

Also, in the process of registering, the registration page "submitted" my partial information before I had finished filling in all of the blanks, and now it will not allow me to re-register, but also will not show me a registration number. I have thirty days to get that one sorted out, I have no doubt all will be good.

I am, really, very happy with my new toy....really....thanks Bapu...

I think...

Albert

    Hey Albert,

If I could have found a copy of 8.5 for sale I would have sent that instead. Sadly I could not locate one.

I'm sure you'll get it sorted out and I'm sure you've got the latest sound card drivers right?

Did you see the X1b "readme" on the manual setting you have to make in the parameter screen?

I just hope your machine is not too underpowered. My laptop is "under spec" but X1b runs on it. I had weird behavior under X1 and X1a on the laptop.

I was wondering if your machine would be up to it, Albert.  :(  But that doesn't explain the weird registration thing.  Well, except that these things seem to invent their own problems...  But you'll get it.  You know...if I did, ANYONE can!  :)

As much as I complain about X1 I also feel very strongly that it is a mistake to be left behind... so I think any of us are best served to persevere and make the best of X1.

With that in mind, I think bapu made a good choice and I know Albert, that you will get it worked out.

    Good stuff all around!

    best regards,
    mike

    Hi, Ed, how ya doin?

I did not read that 1b settings thing, I'll go get that right away. The computer is a touch "underpowered" but the program will run. I think there are several things to consider, starting with the size of Paul's projects. He did an absolutely beautiful job of recording the choir, individually capturing every voice so cleanly, and the instruments are recorded just as well. The computer is struggling in the "disc" meter, it starts to fluctuate from 35% to 75%, up and down quickly, then dropout.

This is not what is causing the crash, though. I think I need to do a real complete clean up on my disc drives. I have all of those programs installed, never un-installed anything, 'cause I wanted all of the soft synths and pluggins. Also, I never use the loops, so I could easily un-install a lot of those files and do a visual search for duplicated sub-programs, then move some stuff to external drives to keep the project I am working on and the program itself only on the "c" drive.

It appears the drummer synth is a bit of a cpu hog, so I went to a soundfont drum kit, separated the individual drum parts, and saved a bit of processing power. Lots of work arounds, I have had to get accustomed to that over the years.

Side story...when I first got into the digital recording stuff about seven/eight years ago, I invested money in the daw, a few extra toys like soundforge and cdarchitect, and a bunch of money in the studio itself. After I finished construction I spent more money on advertising. Well, end of story, the home project studio run for profit era was over just about the time started to build mine. The problem with all of this is that I killed the golden goose. My wife had placed a certain amount of faith in my ability to put all of this together and make the money invested back through recording projects. It never materialized, between the cheap daw's, the self destruction of the recording industry itself, the internet's "anyone can be a star" self promotion killing corporate promotion, youtube and the general collapse of the economy, and the money for investment dried up. I am in the process of cutting the studio in half and using part of it as a wood working shop to take on some projects utilizing some of my other talents.

Well, I am heading to the daw computer, the first thing is check those manual settings, then some file maintenance, and we'll see.
