A Mixing Primer...

I have a great friend over in blighty that is actually not a member of this wonderful forum...imagine that. We used to compete almost daily head to head creating remixes. And while I could often times best him in concept or rendering I could never, ever beat him in quality of mix. In fact why he is not one of England's top tier mix engineers is a mystery to me. He goes by the name Loveshadow (I know...I know) and he has a plethora of tracks on Soundcloud. I urge you to go and listen to several...with a close ear on mix and mix balance. He is a master. You may or may not like the styles and genres he produces, but that is of little consequence. Listen to his mixes...and learn. I do...almost every time I hear one.

I assume his address...if like mine is:

Good stuff.  But, there's plenty of people on this site that are as good.  You are one of them.

Thanks, Lynn, Ol pal but as I said it's not his content I'm directing folks his way for...it's his mixing chops. They're never muddy, boxy, harsh, flat or dull. Every element is perfectly placed and properly balanced. I have a handful of tunes from "famous artists and mix engineers" that I use as both instructional mix tools and mix comparos. I could just as well use almost any of Jeff's. He really does have great ears. The bastid;-)

I remember running across him during the "Shock the Monkey" remix competition. His mixes are really great. They have a character that just immediately grabbed my attention.

Tried to send him a message once on Soundcloud a couple of years ago about a remix he did of an Imogen Heap song, but since he don't know me from a tick, it got ignored, lol.

Yup...that's when I got to know him as well. He still hasn't forgiven me (or Pete for that matter) for besting him in the competition. And while we were more like oil and water then we've since become great pals and I continually marvel at his mix skills.
