A Rocker with some special guests..(update with bass info)

After having life interrupt my summer, and waiting for a couple of originals to cook, I'm jumping back in with an old rocker I used to play back in the day. The original of this had a female harmony part. After hearing "Linda" on this forum, I asked her to join me on this, and she accepted. It's her first online collaboration, and she was fantastic to work with.

Linda-Harmony vocal
James Griffiths-Tasty lead guitar bits
Pete J-Drums
Lizzy Daymont-Bass (Pete's wife, and the reason he no longer plays bass)
Myself-Lead vocal, rhythm guitars

For those of you who have an aversion to covers, you probably haven't heard this, so check it out anyway please.

Its called "Paper Thin" by John Hiatt. Click the soundclick link below

Thanks
Randy

p.s. It sounds good LOUD !

A few tweaks to get some midrange, get the bass to cut thru, reduce verb on lead vocal, fatten up snare. Tightened up a few timing issues.

I got a question about Lizzy Daymont's bass guitar signal chain, so I asked her, and here is what she used.
Sadowsky Metro MV4>EBS Multicomp Compressor(stompbox)>Sansamp Bass Driver(DI Box)>M Audio Delta>DAW
Lizzy says the Sadowsky is basically a J Bass on steriods, and it never fails to sit it a mix great, whether its Rock, Metal, or Jazz.

Well I'm just listening at work right now but can't wait to listen on my speakers at home so I can fully appreciate it, but sounds like great performances on this. Sounds like a band that's been playing together for some time!!

I was about not to listen because of it being a cover tune, but this was a really well executed performance and production, and a real toe-tapper of a song. The lead and back up vox are perfect for this style tune.

Cool stuff, I didn't know you could sing....

Production and levels are good - except to me, on my system , it sounds like a big whole in the midrange territory. Like it could really use some warming up.

IMHO its plenty warm already for the genre. If anything you could stiffen it up a little by adding a half to a full dB peak in the 1.5kHz range, fairly wide Q around 1.

Randy, great song. Awesome collab. You've got a good sound here.

Oh yeah listening on the phones cranked up right now and the bass really shines. Great performances!! And man James can rock can't he?? Excellent vocals as always Randy...

Small crit would I might like things a little bit less verbed. Although the way it is makes it sound more "live" so maybe it's best like it is... makes me want to head out to the clubs and catch a live band..

    Nice job!!!

no aversion to covers here, but I still haven't heard it!

Love the bass on this - very nice sound and great up front feel. nice vox, cool BGVs from Linda, tasty guitar. I agree that it could use a little mid-range warmth, other than that, it's reallly well done. bravo, randy!

Jon, JonC, Guitarhacker, Mark(mwall), Thanks for your compliments and your time. I really appreciate it.

Notnat- Thanks. If you've heard the original, this is a bit heavier, but I liked how it came out.

Tom/Pogue-Yeah, I agree. I love the straight ahead stuff alot, always have.

Mr. Wessels-Yeah, I can "croak" one out now and again. Thanks for noticing. As to the mix, I tweaked it a little per your suggestion. PM me if it sounds better, or if you think it needs something else. Always appreciate your ears.

Mamabear- Its actually "2" gals. This forum has had a strange facination with girl bass players in the past, so I got lucky when Lizzy was available for this. She is a stone killer bassist, and has worked with some bigtime talent. She is also a foul mouthed little rocker, who can hold her own on any stage, anywhere. (Do a you tube search to see her in action)

Amatuer-Thanks. I played this song in a band, back in the day, and that was the sound I was going for. Glad you liked it.

Tom.tdye- Thanks alot man. I appreciate the advice, and tweaked things a little. PM me if you think its better or not.

Dave-Glad you made it home to listen to this loud. Yes, for those who haven't heard James outside of Acrobats Supper, the dude has serious rock chops, and great musical instincts. Nothing he played on this is like the original, which he had never heard. James always surprises me in a great way when he joins a collaboration.

Reece-Thanks for listening friend. Tried "warming" it up a little. It's a fine line, as you know. I'm one tweak away from warm mud

    Thanks again folks

To the whole 'crew'... you just knocked me out with this tune! Everyone's performance was nothing short of professional. Randy was kind enough to give me sneek previews of this, but hearing it with everyone involved is killer. No nits, picks, or crits...You all are top notch on this and I would love to hear more of this in the future!! Excellent musicianship by all!

Great performances but the mix lets it down. The snare is thin and the bass way too tubby in the 200Hz region, with nothing to show at 80-100Hz where it should be flapping trouser legs. Less verb on the vox will bring it forward to the front of the band.

Linda, the pleasure was all mine. Thanks again.

James, Thanks again. After listening to the track you sent me, and dropping it into the mix, I actually let out a "whoa", that scared the dog. Great work pal.

Grant- Thanks for listening man. Good to see you around here more.

Larry, Thanks for your ears buddy. If you hadn't traded your Strat for a panflute or some damn thing I woulda had you on this too!

Paul, thanks for the precise suggestions. I knew when I posted this, that it wasn't quite "there" yet, but I didn't know what to do. Your suggestion, along with a few others will get some attention in the next few days. As I'm sure you can relate, this thing got away from me a few times mixwise (?) and I would just take it back to zero, and start again with drums, then bass, etc.. I really tried to take my time with this mix, with an effort to make it sound clean, a little dirty, and have some balls. I still consider myself a newb at this, but compared to my earlier stuff, I'm making strides. Thanks again, and pop back in a few days if you have time, and let me know if its better.

No How, Thanks for the kind words. I've actually seen Hiatt play this in several different backing bands, and it was different every time. There is a live version somewhere, where its even heavier than this one. The guy is a really underrated songwriter in my opinion.

I agree about the bass being boxy, but the performance is tight! Great job Lizzy.

    :-) I liked it

    I like the square drums

    and the driving bass.

    Nice guitar work.

I like the vocals. But there's something there, I'm not sure if I'm hearing the room? But they could be recorded better. And that high part floats around a bit from a timing perspective with your lead, but these are minor crits, I loved the song! and the performances.

    Hey Robby,

    Thanks for the great compliment!!

The most difficult part for me and Randy was the Phrasing on the vocals.

If we had actually been playing this song live, it would have come together after repeated perfomances.

I think it is pretty cool that none of us have even ever played together as a band. The wonders of technology!!!!

...and I believe that we were all after the "live band sound", with this song.

So, considering the situation, I think that the sound overall, including the mix, comes together to simulate a live band sound.

    Thanks again, Linda

ok, I listened to the latest mix and yes, you're right, the bass is too loud, but the tone is good. I'd leave it where it is for the intro and then use and envelope to put it into place when the rest of the band kicks in.

The snare could lose some 2--3KHZ tho, fatten it up a bit, and put a compressor on it with a 10-15ms attack and a short release so that it gets some snap.

    Randy, Linda,
Sounds pretty darn good! I always liked Hiatt, and this is a really nice rendition. Had a chance to see him many years ago.
I got a kick out of "New shoes" too. I could hear some sax a la the big man on this one.

Okay, I think I have the bass dialed in now, along with the snare.

Paul, thanks so much for checking back. Your suggestions on the snare were spot on. This is the sound I was looking for on that.

Robby, if you check back, listen again. I changed up the lead vocal some. The timing issues are my fault, but I just now fixed what I could.

Robert, thanks so much for checking this out. Yeah, New Shoes was an experiment, that could still use some work. Got a Sax?

Jsykes, thanks for checking it out. Listen again if you can, and let me know if the bass sounds better.

Mark, I think I got this closer now.

I'm amazed that some of you can listen, and hear the frequencies that need adjusting. I learned alot tonight about how subtle changes make huge differences. I hope to get to that level someday. That is, if standing in front of drummers and Marshall stacks for 25 years haven't taken that ability from my hearing already

    Thanks Again
    Randy
