A couple new tunes with videos...

I can't seem to get my actual friends to listen to this on Facebook, so maybe I can entice one or two of you to check it out and give some feedback, either on the songs, the videos or both...

My latest solo project - a downtempo/ambient/electronica ditty called "Judge".  This video was created entirely from old, b&w archival film footage that I edited together to form a story of sorts.  It's old and a little too dark in places, but I was so enthralled with the film itself that I didn't try to fix it.  I've cut it and edited it, but only used fades where I've cut - any jump cuts you see are original, and (I think) went with the song as is.  I'm  considering a whole series of these.  The old, public domain films can be so cool... why not use them?  I've been watching a lot of old newsreels lately on internetarchive.org.  Totally cool stuff.

JUDGE - Julianna McDuffie

The other one I posted in the coffeehouse a week or so ago, but if you missed it - people seem to like it.  It's an Industrial Trip-Hop piece that I did with my Swedish producer friend, Tomas Barkman (Chrome).  The video is jittery on purpose to fit the song, so don't watch it if you are prone to seizures (seriously...).  We pulled the vox waaaay back into the song on purpose and maybe it's a little to verby, but that's a style choice here.

Align - Julianna McDuffie/Tomas Barkman

Lyrics to both songs posted on youtube.

Awesome and inspired are the words that come to mind.  I'm glad you posted your lyrics in the first song because the synth kinda overwhelmed your vocal, but not so much in the second song.  Have you ever heard the British band Curve?  The second song reminds me of them a bit.  However, I think you're very original, and I look forward to hearing more from you.

Well, I think the voice should be about twice as loud as it is now in those videos. The first one may need more oomph in it perhaps with the low end.

Very nice indeed!  I agree with the above comments about the vocal in the first one but that doesn't really detract from the fact that these are really good songs and videos.

    In Judge:

My ears were mesmerized and longed to comprehend the deep passions and beauties once more.  (as if the words could enumerate such passionate hope and love)

As usual, I'm madly in love with this ... the depth, lyrics, and vocal performance ... and I soared heavenward within these romantic oceans.

Well, a haunting song, Julianna!!  I love the way you used your vibrato and you were pitch perfect throughout, not to mention your tone.  One of the best I've heard from you.  Missing Person will always be the best! :-)  The video really went well with the tune.  I watched it beut kept sneaking a peak at the lyrics and getting lost in your vocal.  Good one, my friend!  Oh, I listened to Judge.  I'll get the other in the morning.  Wake up with Special J.

Watched both video's. Both songs are great. I love this kind of music.

The only thing I picked up on is, one of the percussive type instruments really jumps out on Align when I listened to it on my laptop.

"I can't seem to get my actual friends to listen to this on Facebook"

Now hold on a second there, girl... maybe you should make that "Most of my friends..." 'cause I seem to remember myself and a few others commenting... yeah, yeah... that's right

Okay, now that we have that out of the way, let me say this about the tunes-

Firstly, I should probably recuse myself because I'm such a fan of yours and Tomas too, but I won't.  But just to repeat what I said on FB, I loved both songs.  The tracks were well done, and the vocals were... well... what I'd call classic Julianna.

What amazed me were how far you're video composition and editing chops have come.  You've gotta' stop doing that because it's distracting me from the music (I have trouble seeing and hearing at the same time... could be an age thing :-0).

Again, great stuff, J.  We love ya'.

    Hi Julianna
Very well done. I love your voice and wish it was a little more present in the mix.  The video was really creative and ver dark.  The song,s melody is lighter than that and soars above it.  That contrast is what held me.

    You are very talented.

Oh, geez, you guys... I had a crazy busy day, and just now got a chance to comment...

    Tony! Hey, you. :)

Lynn, I don't know Curve,  but I'll be checking them out very soon.

SpaceAlf, Thanks for your ears.  I have a tendency to mix the vox too loud (I mixed "Judge", but not "Align"), and I probably overcompensated, wanting a pulled back feel.  One of these days, though... I'm gonna get it. :)

    Thank you, Tim & Freddy!

    Oh, Phillip.... :)

Sure, MGH, you can write me a song... But i have to warn you that I'm dedicating myself to these two projects at the moment.  I hope you understand.

Hey, Warren!  I'll think of you over coffee, then. ;). Thanks, buddy.

    Thanks, Scotty! Bub!  Jan!

You know, Philzy, I thought of you and Wookiee and Fox when I wrote that... ;) and truth be told, I did major in TV and Radio.   Thanks for all your support.  I mean that.

Rimshot, that is EXACTLY what I was going for.  Awesome.

I've seen them both, Jules!  vox are smokin' hot on both of them! I loved the imagery in Judge.  I wasn't as enthused about the video for Align, although I see where you're going with it, I felt like it could have gone a little different direction to really make it shine.  just my opinion, tho, and it's not that big of a deal.

I love both tracks and videos Jules.

Judge is so trippy its almost ambient - and I mean that in a very very good way, difficult to pull off both maintaining a dreamy vibe and yet retaining interest musically, it's definitely your vocal that achieves that.

Align has a Curve feel to it, whilst still being totally original. As well as your vocal (for which your voice is perfect for this genre IMO) I love the pulsing synth bass and the breakdown sections, again, adding spice and interest on repeated listens.

I wish I had your video skills too !

Somewhat on the darkside but cool ! Like the video work , everything with your song sounded great including your vocals but alittle more volume on your vocal track I think would get you vocals out front some but thats just me and my ears .
