A couple of Christmas piano solos.

I added a few extra parts to both of these traditonal tunes. I was working on them for live work so I figured why not record them? The first one is "Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel" and the second one is " What Child Is This".

I wanted to maybe brush up a few things in midi but I am having trouble with the piano roll in Sonar. It seems that I edit and the edits visually look like they are ok and then when I play things back nothing is corrected...so as this is I played everything in directly with zero edits.
I would be interested to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I would be happy to get any comments good or bad- Thanks! Tim

This sounds nice! Very well done!

I can't help you with the PRV as I'm a notation guy. I never got the piano roll. Leave it in the piano I say. lol!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Excellent renditions and superb playing. The first one is my favourite of the two.

Thanks Blip. I made a few changes to both songs. There were a few small notes I didn't like in the first two. I posted the links in the first post. Thanks for listening!

    Hi,

    Excellent playing and arrangements.

As for PRV...it's always worked pretty well to fix my playing

Hi Tim. I very much enjoyed these. There were a couple bum notes but solo piano is merciless and for a straight shot this is pretty darn well played. I thought the intro on "Oh Come" was fantastic. You can tell from listening to these that you have a good sense of space and timing for solo piano and play with a lot of feeling. The piano patch/vst really shows it's limitations in "What Child". Especially in the upper octaves.

Nicely played, Tim.  I've struggled with PRV myself, but in my case I thought it was just due to my playing so sloppily.

Listened to both and really liked both. There's something about piano solo's. I wish I could play half as good as you, Janet, and others here.

    Thanks,

    Bub.

Way to go, Tim!  I'm not sure I've heard you play before, so this was a nice surprise!  Very well done!

It sounds like you were able to make changes in PRV after all?  I've had that problem when I realized I had two piano tracks and was editing the wrong one.  :(  Otherwise, I'm not sure what could be the problem.

    Beautiful!

" so as this is I played everything in directly with zero edits. " I can't do that... :-( I like to tell people, "if you're not a piano player, I can convince you that I am?" :-) You however are clearly a piano player.

I listened to Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel and really appreciated the delicacy displayed. I cannot help you with the Piano Roll Issue but I liked your playing very much...What piano samples do you use? Regards eric

    Hi, Tim,

Absolutely beautiful playing and wonderful piano tone on both of these excellent Christmas instrumentals!

Are you using a direct hardware synth or a VSTi for your piano sound?  It really sounds fantastic.

Both of your songs brought back warm childhood memories of Christmas eve decorating the tree with my parents, while listening to their John Williams Christmas LPs on vinyl.  But happily, you're versions didn't have any scratchy noise during the intros, like every LP we had when I was growing up!

Excellent job, Tim, fantastic playing and professional quality recording.  To quote Bob Hope "Thanks for the Memories!"

Thanks for sharing, and Merry Christmas, buddy!
    Bob

Thanks for all of the comments on these songs!

Janet I was trying to edit a frozen track, which isn't possible. I finally got it figured out with some help. I also need to make a few adjustments between tracks for volume. On one track I used Cakewalks midi plug for velocity adjustment.

The real piano seems much more forgiving on notes than the vsti does IMO.

The ivory program you are using is excellent Janet.

I appreciate all of you listening and the  comments you have made. I intend to return the favor tonight when I can listen to tracks.

I figured it was something fishy (and aggravating!) like that.  Glad you got it figured out!

Yes, Ivory's amazing, and if you're interested in it, you can buy their 'Grand' for only about $169.00.  Unless you really want several grands for $369 (or whatever it is now.)  (there are still several choices in the cheaper version.)    And I agree about real pianos being more forgiving...I always have to pull the velocities of all the notes down when I record cause otherwise it sounds like I'm really pounding those keys.  I don't think I sound like that in real life on a real piano.  At least I hope not.  :)

Lovely!  I commented in another post that I didn't grok the arrangement on "O, Holy Night".  After listening to a few of your other tunes, I hear it now.  I like your interpretations.  I like people who take chances, so I say well done.
