A cover....

Insprired yesterday by Robert's "Creep" I decided it's been way to long since I threatened the hearing of anyone who dares enter the songs forum.

So, grab your ear plugs, lock up the horse and muzzle the dog. (except Beagle)

I present American Idiot

(yes it's download, I couldn't be bothered to put it on soundclick, and even so you still have to download it from soundclick and soundcloud to hear it... you just don't realise you're doing it.)

I rushed this off tonight, I know about the compressor artifacts on the drums..

Crack open a beer (or 3) and crank up the volume

Then rip it apart and tell me everything that is wrong with it

Well done.  It took me back to the Wierd Al concert I was at a couple of months ago and his version of this.  This mix sounds very good to me, maybe the drums could come up a tad.  I like this.

I like the groove on the guitars and the interplay with the bass...I'm trying to say I likes it. Great job.

Karyn, so glad you decided to post something up and jump on in. :) You play everything on this? I really enjoyed this...good guitar tone...cool lo-fi/phone type vocal sound when it was called for and your voice fit this perfectly! Sheesh...our Sonar women are so awesome and talented!

I didn't hear any excessive comp on the drums...just a bit more room on the kick than I would have used. Gimme some gear info on this. Just curious what you used/played etc. This really was cool...I got a few covers I might post...maybe I'll join ya. Thanks for posting this...good to hear something from you. :)

Daryl - I love Wierd Al. Thanks for listening.  Yes, the drums could maybe come up a bit, or turn rest down.

Starise - Thanks for trying to like it

Danny - Short post hun, you ok?  Yes, I'm playing everything you hear, isn't that obvious?  There'd be way less mistakes if it were someone else.

Quick list of gear and techniques used.

Drums,  played in on Alesis DM5.  I couldn't play it all in one shot (I'm not a drummer) so its one pass playing kick, snare and some toms, then a second pass for hats and ride.  All rendered with BFD2.

Bass is my Aria pro 5 string, though I only used 3 on this track. Amp, Guitar Rig bass amp with a touch of compression.

Guitars - I used my LP DarkFire (all six strings). GuitarRig provided the amplification for the rhythm guitars (4, spread about) and one of the lead guitars, (low octave, panned right).  Lead guitar amp is English valve amp from amplitube, (low gain, but with an overdrive pedal before it)

Vocals, heavy eq for the narrow band effect, the other main vocal is just doubled to two tracks with slight delay and a touch of modulation to give width.

All glued together with FabFilter compressor and limiter on master bus, and a touch of multi-band comp.

Oh, and some reverb from perfect space.

I love this! Lots of energy and azz-kickin; guitars! The vocals are perfect also. No additional comments on the drums necessary so I won't go there. Thanks for waking me up this morning!

Well.... that was pretty rocking. Not only can you shoot small groups and play the cowbell, but you can rock too!

Speaking of cowbell...... it needs MORE.

Aside from the obvious lack of cowbell, this is very good.

    Hey Karyn,
You ROCKED that Green Day song.  Your guitar tone /performance was awesome.  Mix sounds good on my end.  I would of liked a little more thump on the kick drum. Your vox could come up a notch also. FANTASTIC COVER!

LOL @ "Short post, you ok hun" Hahahahahahaha! Well c'mon...ya said this was a quickie...how brutal did ya want me to be? LOL! :) Nothing to be brutal about actually. Thanks for sharing the production stuff with me. I soo knew you played those drums for real. They sounded too human to be programmed...which I'll take any time over a stagnant, programmed kit.

Karyn...I know you know more about Sonar than me...but I'm curious...have you ever messed with the "auto-quantize as you play" feature? This works incredible on single drum tracks that we play one at a time. Two things I did hear with the drums were a few loose timing kicks and some hats. Nothing bad...and for this style, it actually made it cool and acceptable. But try that feature sometime...it fixes things as you play and as long as you don't do anything too nuts...you can just about always set it for 16ths and be in good shape with it.

Bass: sounded good to me! You know...that is sad that we rarely use the upper strings. At least I don't. All my basses have barely touched G strings....ok wait, that don't sound right. LOL! I just think for most rock stuff...when we use the higher strings...the bottom falls out, ya know?

I liked that guitar sound...all six strings! Hahahaha! Dug the vocals...and your accent! Yeah I know...you don't have an accent, I do! :) I've been hearing a lot about that Fab Filter stuff. I looked into it and some of those plugs just look so ugly. LOL! I don't know why I have this "plug image" thing...if something looks bad to me, I have a problem using it. Some of those just look weird....but I know that whole suite is highly recommended. I'll have to break down and get them. I look at my ugly mug in the mirror every day...so I guess I can look at them and use them too. :) Great job Karyn...I'm glad you posted this and thanks for the gear run-down. :)

Hey Danny, nice to hear from you.

Sorry if my typing is abit slury but I just got homefrom our bike club xmas bash.  Yes, a good time was had by all and I knew you weren't there so I had to drink your beer for you!! (it woulda gone flat and I know you wouldn't have wanted it then)

I hadmy iPhone with me and by some strange coincedence it had the above track loaded on it.  Well you just gotta don't you...   I convinced the DJ unplug his laptop and connect my iphone.

All I can say is, to anyone who is unsure about their mix, try playing it through a 3k PA to a room full of pissed drunk bikers.
Half my friends refused to believe it was me!!  And I was one of them!!!!!

    Try it sometime.

No realy.  You should try it...

You'd have to be an American Idiot to not realize your songs were downloaded when listening on Soundclick and others. Gosh. Sheesh. What's up with the disclaimer? LOL.

Liked your rendition of this. Although, I have to admit though, I've never heard the original other than the hook on TV.

    Hi Karyn,

Wow, this sounds great.  Killer guitar tones and overall mix/production.

    Excellent job!

    Hi there Karyn

Awesome cover, I don't mind a bit of Green Day myself

And (I can't believe nobody else has said it) - this was Tré Cool
