A departure for me: some electronica

Been getting into programming Omnisphere's synth engine and did this short piece as an experiment (inspired by listening to some of Wookie's stuff).

The pads are mostly stock Omnisphere patches, the leads are a mix of standard and custom-programmed Omnisphere patches, and the percussion is a combination of various Kontakt libraries including a favorite MO8 patch called "Wood" that I've converted to a Kontakt library.

Musically, it's admittedly kind of aimless. It goes into a buildup at the end that sounds like it's going somewhere, and then just ends. Any suggestions regarding how I might flesh it out into a proper tune are welcomed.

Best enjoyed with headphones, IMO.

bitflipper, This sounds really good so far. As you said it has little direction thus far and so I might suggest adding various orchestration to it in various places throughout  for some dynamic effects. So far you have an awesome background and that's a great start. Only you know the direction that you want to take this piece to, so you can add in what instrumentation you feel takes it to where you want to go. I always start out in a very similar fashion and just keep adding various instrumentations and effects sounds until I have a finished project. Then I fine tune and  master each track using Izotope Ozone 5 for depth and perception, reverb, limiting, gates and stereo width. It is a long process, but it works for me. I use Cakewalk Kinetic 2 which encompasses a lot of my major instrumentations, such as East West Quantum Leap various samples, the Cakewalk samples, and several others. I also use Smart Sound samples incorporated with my Sonicfire Pro 5 software, it has lots of great sample and loops that work great for me, as well. I have so many samples I have to have a side drive of 4 tb, so it is endless for me searching all of my files when creating a piece of music. Hope you will find the direction you want to bring this piece full circle so we can here the final production.

    Peace and blessings, John

4TB of samples and you call yourself "theguitarplayer"? LOL, I know what you mean. I have trouble just recalling a patch in Omnisphere's factory library, much less all the Kontakt stuff. I've started keeping notes, in hopes that if I can't remember the patch or library name I'll at least remember which song I used it in and go from there. Some days I think I should just go back to playing piano and organ.

As to where to take it that's out there in the ether just open up to it and let it flow through you to your finger tips.  That is how most of mine happen. (Plus several hours of patch hunting and tweaking of my Arturia Modular V and CS-80 V soft synths.)

I can understand that, I had thought about selling everything and just playing my acoustic guitar, but then that would be stupid for me, because I'm having to much fun creating with it all. I do use my Casio keyboards to create some of my own samples as well, using all of the East West Quantum Leap software I have, mostly Complete Composer which are various EWQL software, but I also have a lot of the Sony software and samples also. It's just a never ending journey, isn't it? Your doing some great work, so just keep having fun and enjoy!!

I get a lot of inspiration from the folks who frequent this forum and listen to as much as I can, even though I rarely comment. I also suffer from the greener-over-there syndrome: when I hear a symphonic piece I want to drop everything and go back to doing that. Then I hear some bluesy thing by the likes of notnat or AT, or some good ol' straight-ahead rock 'n roll from batsbrew or Bob Oister, I want to drop everything and do something like that. And then yorolpal comes along with a novelty tune and I want to spend the day with a notepad and write some clever lyrics. Then I hear julibee sing - anything - and wonder why I even bother croaking out vocals at all.

Thanks to everybody for providing me with so much free entertainment!

Well, the good thing is at our ages we have had a great time doing what we do. I kind of like to look at it as a blessing, because we could all be laboring out in some field for pennies on the dollar. Instead, God has taken it upon Himself to give us each a special gift, and so we use it to bring others joy. It's a good thing!

    Bit,

Fine start to this yet to be named tune.   Recognize a number of Omnisphere sounds in here..  It all sounds good.   Couple points here and there, where the guitar Pitch Wheel is noticeable, probably wouldn't be noticed by most.  Stringed instruments can be a real pain with the Pitch Wheel.   That said, it sounds great overall, quite enjoyable listen.

I'd have to part a lot of mental cobwebs to retrieve enough German vocabulary to write a song lyric! It was 40 years when I lived in Germany, and there haven't been a lot of Germans to talk around these parts. Plus I learned the language in Bavaria, which is akin to a German learning to speak English in Mississippi. Plus there's the problem with no umlaut on my keyboard...excuses, I got a bunch of 'em.

Mark: yeh, I've noticed that Omnisphere is prone to a zipper effect on certain patches when pitchwheel events are manually drawn in. There is apparently no smoothing going on, as some other synths do. At least, I don't see any options for it. There's no problem if I actually record the pitchwheel as opposed to drawing the curves in by hand. I just like the precision of drawing them in, so I know exactly where the note's going to land.

that's right, all I hear are excuses  not too long ago, there was a eurodance-project called "Mo-Do" who had a major hit in Germany with "Eins Zwei Polizei" - the lyrics were eight lines of a children rhyme! So your Bavarian drinking songs "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" or "Eoans Zwoa Gsuffa" lyrics should be sufficient enough! (and if you say "alright speedtom, why don't YOU do it": I can't. It must be a foreigner doing this is to make it charming enough. "Mo-Do" for instance were from Italy!)

Nice sonic textures going on in that piece.  And well mixed.  Last summer I noticed Gino Vannelli relying on Omnisphere in his studio quite a lot and I told myself that I need to buy that package.  A year later and I still don't have it.  Maybe it has something to do with the price tag.

As I'm writing this I'm listening to your next song - helicopter - very cool stuff going on - great guitars sounds and vocals.

Omnishpere seems like Dimension - but I would imagine it goes a lot further?  More flexible?

I listened to this song on Soundcloud the other day and left my comments there (I think it's great just for the record). I would like to echo your comments on the people here on the forum. Everyone has been such an inspiration for me to get better at engineering audio. Some of you guys are really getting impressive results that makes me believe there is a chance I might be able to do myself justice someday. It's a great time to be a musician! I remember going into a studio for the first time in 86 or 87. I left knowing I would someday end up in my own studio doing things my way for better or worse. I didn't have a clue how I was going to buy that $20,000 Tascam board, 2" tape machines or all of the other equipment. Now I'm getting much better results for 5% of the investment.

    Hey bitflipper,
I like how the structure flows, meshing the different sections together. One thing you could probably do is take the theme of the last section and double it. I think it starts at around 3:25 but really you could probably do a repeat from around 3:08. Extend it, build it up with some nice dynamics and creative filtering, play with the orchestration. Then you could probably have the musical resolution decay with the percussion hits over 15 seconds, really draw that out. Let me know what you think.

I still haven't figured out what to do with this opus-in-progress, but I was fiddling with it last night and decided to add Ozone to the master for grins. There's still no limiting - this kind of music just seems to like full dynamics - all I did was to add Ozone's harmonic exciter. I've uploaded the modified mix to SoundCloud so you can hear the difference it makes. Note the deeper bass and brighter percussion.

I've got a bunch of exciters and saturators and such, including popular plugins such as TB Reelbus and FabFilter Saturn, but I keep coming back to good ol' Ozone for this. It can fatten and brighten a mix of any genre without aliasing, killing transients or introducing grittiness (unless you want it to).

I should add that the settings used were very gentle: 1.2/100% on the low band to 120Hz, 1.1/77% 1.5KHz-6KHz and 2.5/74% above 6KHz.

This is great, Bit.. it's fantastic, like way better than most of my stuff- this feels like a film score of some sort. Real nice. Now I wanna actual collab.

David, I just listened to "Me and My Robot Arm", which brought a big smile. I think the kindred spirit you should be collaborating with is yorolpal. (btw, that's a compliment.)
