A few questions (if anyone knows) about v2
I am considering jumping on board with P5 seeing as I can get it at a reasonable price (being an S4P owner) along with a free upgrade (unless Edirol Europe have a different policy?) but have a few questions with regards to whether some of my v1.5 dislikes have been changed. 1. It mentions that multi-output support has been improved. Does this mean that each output for such instruments now has it's own track instead of the little number box that is currently there? 2. I never particularly liked the way you couldn't have separate lanes for automation...the way I do [some] automation in Sonar is to use multiple midi channels pointing to the same DXi and use midi blocks in each lane for automating different parameters. For example, I would use 3 lanes for say, Tau Pro, one with the notes in, one with the automation for Cutoff and one with the automation for Resonance. All these would be held in a folder track and I can freely move around blocks of Cutoff automation without moving the other bits of automation. I have seen a screenshot somewhere which shows one block of automation below the midi notes block in P5v2 and just wondered if the number of 'sub-lanes' is restricted or not? Anyway, any information anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Really great questions, Rob. I was assuming that each output would get it's own track lane, or perhaps you can set it up as such. But I have no hard information to back that up. I'd also guess that the track lane limit would have to be at least 16, in keeping with Cyclone's figure, but again, I don't know that. I'll have to agree with you on the existing automation structure. Sure, it's simple enough with using only a few curves. But I always yearned for something to differentiate among the various messages. Color choices, selectablity, and multiple overlays would be nice, even in the P-Seq display. Once again, we're in a wait & see holding pattern, but at least we're seeing the light shining brightly at the end of the tunnel.

Cheers for the reply. As mentioned, I have seen a screenshot (in the latest issue of Sound On Sound magazine) that shows the automation curve below the actual midi part for the Groovesynth, but it doesn't show whether the automation is 'connected' to the midi notes part or whether it can be moved independently. It also doesn't indicate whether more of these automation curves can be created underneath or whether you are limited to one. Be nice if a Cakewalk person could drop in and answer this, as I would definitely buy Project5 if the aforementioned things were included. I still may buy, but I'm kinda 50/50 at the moment...

It says in the specs that you can add multiple track layers, which would imply that you can drop automation into those layers.

Yes, it does intimate that doesn't it? Hope that is the case... Anyway, I have sent an email to Edirol UK to check that they are doing the same 'buy now, get the upgrade free' offer (a shame that non-US customers cannot take this as read but anyway) and if they are then I will more than likely jump on board. I guess if a couple of things are missing from P5v2 that I need, I can always Rewire into Sonar (even though I am not keen on Rewire...how about a DXi version of P5?)

Someone in the forum posted a link to a special 'Europe' version of the free upgrade form recently. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

As it happens, shortly after posting that message I popped over to Edirol UK's site and they seem to have updated it with the info that the upgrade will be free and with the form needed for it. So I decided to take the plunge and purchase P5 and will join the others here waiting with bated breath for the update

So I decided to take the plunge and purchase P5 Welcome aboard the Crazy Train, Rob. You've been here enough to realize that this is the start of your descent into the Snake Pit [reference from the Olivia de Havilland movie]. Now, let's see if we can't find out some more answers to those questions that you've presented ...

Thanks for the welcome. I hope I get the 1.5 version in the next couple of days, so I can start to get a good grounding in the software ready for the new features. I guess that we may get an answer to the questions on Monday, assuming that Cakewalk actually allow their staff to have the weekends off But as I said earlier, even if P5 doesn't quite fulfill the above criteria, then I can always rewire into Sonar and do the automation in there.

Don't get too comfy with V1.5... and be sure your seatbelt is fastened for V2 liftoff. Looking at all the preview pix, one can only say "Gee!" As for how many "G's" the real thing will pull, golly gee whizz - I can hardly wait! I have this image of a very interesting creature that pupates in the background and emerges as something incredibly better than all the other creatures in it's class.

You actually startle people when you shake their hands! It's ok, though, just tell them you're a farmer, and you do that funny shake because you're so used to milking cows. Anyway, if you ever got lost, it would be easy to follow the DNA trail.

You got me there, Mike. Only two kinds of people in this world: Those who "pupate", and the rest who lie about it. But unless that's a Ray Charles reference, I'd say that I'm not the only one of us who's vision is faltering from extreme "pupation" ... my name's Tom.

Yeah, I know, but I thought you might have seen the movie... If I have to start explaining my jokes around here, I'm going back to Canada to find that wallrus!
