A few simple questions from a potential buyer.
So I was looking at Music Creator 5 and I thought it might be good for a project I'm working on. I just wanted to clarify a few things about it first. 1) So if I understand it right, the program allows you to use virtual instruments to create music? Don't need music loops and don't need real instruments to plug in? And how many instruments can you choose from? Give or Take? 2) If I were to make a song through this program to be used in a project, and that project is something to be sold to earn money for myself, would I owe any money to Cakewalk because I used their program to create the music? In short, is using this or other Cakewalk programs royalty free and free to use personally or commercially? And if so, can someone perhaps link me to a place on the website where it says this? Because I looked and couldn't find it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. There are an almost infinite number of virtual instruments you can use. More are being created every day. These are software synthesizers, VSTs or DXs. Some are included with MC, like Sound Center and TTS-1, and there are literally thousands available on the internet and many are free. Most are tweakable so you can make your own, unique sounds. Some are traditional instrument sounds; strings, drums, horns, winds, guitars and keyboards. Some are software versions of electronic synthesizers. But using the Staff or Piano Roll to make music can become tedious. A keyboard to enter MIDI data is easier, even if you have to teach yourself how to play one. In my opinion. I'm pretty sure there are no royalties to Cakewalk or any of the second-party providers of software included with the program. I don't recall ever reading that, but I'm sure it's true. The only thing like that I can remember is that if I use a certain synth I bought (not a Cakewalk synth) in a released song, I have to include that I used the synth, kinda like saying "Joe played the harmonica on track 5".

esmo04 So I was looking at Music Creator 5 and I thought it might be good for a project I'm working on. I just wanted to clarify a few things about it first. 1) So if I understand it right, the program allows you to use virtual instruments to create music? Correct. Don't need music loops (also correct) and don't need real instruments to plug in? Technically correct...BUT it's easier to use real instruments to create the music...like a midi keyboard/synth And how many instruments can you choose from? Give or Take? In MC5... boxed version...about 150 come with it...plus drums. You will not owe Cakewalk any royalties or licensing fees for using their product in a song that is sold commercially. You pay them for the LICENSE to use this and they LICENSE it to you for 2 computers. It's here on the website somewhere. ALL the companies that make software and synths and samples expect it to be used commercially and not one company says that you owe them for the use of their sounds if you properly bought the license from them. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hope that helps.

esmo, take it from a new user, and a newbie to the world of home recording, once you get up and running, this program is a joy to work with. You might spend a couple of days to be running smooth, but you should be able to work with it within an hour of install. If you click on this link: http://www.soundclick.com/carlisonhart and listen to the "techno experimento" you will hear the song I did a day after install. I had never used a home recording program before, and this was done in about an hour while sitting on my couch watching a movie. If you listen to "Test Tune" you will hear the beginnings of the song I have been working on as of late. 'Techno" is nothing but instruments on MC5. The "Test Tune" is me playing the two guitar tracks, with the sound going through the Amplitube amp that comes with MC5. The drums and bass are part of the MC5 vitutal instruments. I think you will be able to tell that with absolutely no experience you will be able to make some nice sounding stuff. Now, if you HAVE experience, I figure you could do wonders. I apologize for posting song links, but this is done just for example sake. I have no interest in recieving comments on this material yet. ("Another Life" is NOT an MC5 product. That song is 10+ years old and done on a Tascam 4 track recorder. I LOVE modern tech!!! That is a VERY expensive recorder, MC5 only costs $40. Tell me, which sounds better???)

Well, I tell ya Esmo, I've had Music Creator 5 for about a month now. I've spent countless hours fiddling with it, including almost the entirety of this weekend, and I have been unable to produce a damn thing with it. To put it in perspective, a couple years ago, I found Audacity, which is a free recording program, HammerHead, a free virtual drum machine, and MoonFish, a free virtual drum machine/sequencer. I figured out how to use them together and had melodious noise recorded within a couple of hours. Of course, I'm not infallible. In fairness, I am trying to learn an unfamiliar program on an unfamiliar operating system. I still feel like I should have been able to get farther along, though.

Big H - if you're having problems then post a new thread and tell us what your problems are and give us details about your system, your soundcard and what you're trying to do that won't work and we'll try to help you.
