A funny question

I spent a very nice (and actually productive for a change!) 3 hours in my studio last night, which is not too unusual for me for the last 18 months. But last night my husband asked me 'do you really ENJOY working on music that much?' I wasn't quite sure how to answer that pretty obvious question, so after himming and hawing and considering a few smart retorts, I just said, 'well, when I'm not enjoying it anymore, I quit.'

We're not really THAT weird, are we?

OK, so maybe we are. But isn't everybody in their own way?

Yesterday a buddy came over... he plays rock guitar. My wife grabbed the bass, and I played drums. We played a blues and a bossa nova.

It was 45 minutes of pure bliss. :-)

Working by myself in a cave isn't nearly as fun. :-(

So true.. But for some reason it beats whatever else I used to do for fun. And now I can't really remember how I used to spend my free time! LOL

    But yeah, that sounds fun!

I go through definite cycles....time flies when creating...usually working piano parts and arrangments for various local artists the last couple years, but occasionally I'll get a chance to play with a song of my own...many times I'll look at the clock expecting to see 10pm and it shows something like 2am.

At this point, my wife thinks that something is wrong with me if I'm not spending a certain amount of time in the studio.

I'll quit when I don't enjoy it anymore.
Unfortunately i'm not a professional musician anymore, so i have that option every time i get frustrated with my songwriting slump. Thankfully I usually have old songs that I can rewrite or rearrange to try new ideas...

people talk about doing music for fun. for me its actually
quit hard and challenging. the end result is what is fun. i think many
of us are actually very in tune with things rather than unusual.
if i spend time on having fun so to speak when its over its over.

when i spend time writing and recording i have a "tangable product"
my ex wife was a singer and of all the people you would think she
would appreciate the time i spent writing. she came home from
    work and watched tv.

i came home and wrote. one day she said i dont spend enough time
with her. i said ok tommorow well do something together what would
you like to do? she said watch tv together. i said ok.

next day i came home and we did that. soon after "being together"
i said something about a funny part or something on a sitcom.
SHE GOT MAD at me! and said something like "dont bother me".

    ?????? in my mind.

i know what it is. music was meaningfull to me and she even
being a musician herself did not have that. she has since given up
on music and im still at it. some of my other freinds in music have too

its proven that music stimulates the brain. "as long as it aint noise"
if i were a spouse and new this id praise my other for doing this.
1 hour of prechouse time together is worth more than a week of
    of "just being there"

many people just burn time. if thats what they want im ok with that.
but im not one of them no more than they are like me. im into
music and motorcycles. others are into untangable things.

we arent crazy and not even differrent in that term. its a part of
who we are. some musicians "or should i say many" dont even
    write.

so even they dont see it the way we do. id rather see a child
spend a lot of time writing or playing rather than doing some other
things if thats what they wanted. so its no less with a freind or
    spouse either.

sure beats watching tv eating junk food.

my neighbers have been asking me lately how my music is going.
and ill say im happy. they say thats "good"

i think that says it all

music is the best, and most important thing in the world. If you think otherwise, then you shouldnt be a musician.

To me music is life, without music there would be no point. Music allows me to express myself, and also to have fun. Wow, im gonna put that in my uni essay haha.

I've definitely got a weird streak in me where music is concerned, and always have.
When I was younger, I literally lived it. Not as a performer/producer, but as a very avid consumer (albeit of non-consumer music to some degree).

Now, I don't have the time/money to "live" it, and in fact would LOVE to spend much more time on it than I do, but I try to adapt and get stuff done.

My wife... she's very patient about it most of the time. We both have full-time IT/software jobs for relatively busy companies (hers you've DEFINITELY heard of... mine, not so much... yet).
That means long weeks, with frequent nights of work to do, and a 4-year-old who needs at least one of you to spend the nights with him.
Not much time for music, but I've learned ways to organize my projects into smaller sets of work (as opposed to the marathon, multi-day sessions I used to do). Songs take months now instead of weeks (or days), but I get to them.

    Definitely, though:
If I could find more time to be in the studio (or some superdrug... legal and safe... that would make me able to go without sleep), I'd be in there at least 1/4th of my days... at least.

Yeah we are weird, Come to think of it though, I'm just about as weird with other things, I just love total immersion into something, and then you could do a lot worse.

Yes, this music stuff is much better than my old hobbies like counting all the different colors in the bricks of our basement or dressing up my all my fruits and vegetables in my daughter's barbie clothes or trying to memorize the Scranton Pennsylvania phone book...although...now that i'm thinking about it....i do miss it

but...i do think my wife would be happier if i were doing those things instead.

I blame my wife for all of it.

I played guitar in a few awful bands, was never really bothered about pursuing a music career, always anjoyed listening far more - until the day she bought me a Roland D50 for my birthday.

Twelve years on and about £15,000 spent, I have to say I'm at my happiest when I'm on a roll, crafting out a piece in the studio whether it's midi, real guitar or anything else.

It's all HER fault and I can't thank her enough.

The other plus side is that she sings and writes lyrics - believe me, my voice just ain't up to the job and I just cannot get my head around lyrics.

Working alone with computers and technology sucks when it comes to music. Music is meant to be a collaborative art form. That's why so many people think that the "next big thing" in technology will give them that psychic goodness they can really only get from being a part of a musical ensemble.
